The Nationals and Matt Scherzer have agreed on a $210 million, sever-year contract. Scherzer will make $15 million annually for 14 years and the deal includes a record $50 million signing bonus. If you needed proof that there’s more money in baseball than some owners know what to do with it, this deal should seal it. ......The NL Central lost one of its better starting pitchers on Monday as the Brewers traded right-hander Yovani Gallardo to the Rangers for shortstop prospect Luis Sardinas and pitchers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan, one of the top pitching prospects in the 2013 International class. Gallardo is a free agent in 2016 and Cubs fans should realize what it means when you trade top of the rotation starters for prospects.
Venezuelan Winter League
Caribes improved to 10-4 with a 5-2 win over La Guaria while Magallanes (9-5) lost 3-2 to Zulia as both teams prepare for the finals. No Cubs players saw action.
Dominican Winter League
Gigantes won its first game of the series blanking Estrellas 4-0. Junior Lake went 1-for-4 and was involved in an altercation as the game ended. Lake was suspended for four games earlier in the season for his involvement in a bench clearing brawl. Starling Peralta got the final out of the 9th for Estrellas, who lead the series 2-1.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Culiacan won Game 7 in dramatic fashion as a throwing error in the bottom of the 11th gave the home team a 9-8 win over Mexicali. Culiacan faces Jalisco on Wednesday in the first game of the best-of-seven series for a trip to the Caribbean World Series.
Puerto Rican Winter League
No games played on Monday and the best-of-seven series to represent Puerto Rico at the Caribbean World Series starts Tuesday. Santurce faces Mayaguez, who beat Carolina in the final game to earn a spot in the championship series.
