Former Cubs prospect Marquez Smith homered to help Jalisco even the Mexican League championship series. Cubs named their top scout and Geovany Soto signs with White Sox.

Cubs area scout Ty Nichols was named the organization’s Scout of the Year at a banquet held Wednesday night in Chicago. Nichols covers Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, North and South Dakota.......Former Cubs catcher Geovany Soto has agreed to a minor-league deal with the White Sox and an invite to spring training.

Venezuelan Winter League
On the final day of round robin play, Magallanes (10-6) scored two runs in bottom of ninth, including the game-winner on a sacrifice fly by Luis Nunez, for a 4-3 win over Zulia (6-10)........Aragua scored a run in the ninth to tie the game and then added four more in the 11th to beat La Guaria 6-2. 1B Willson Contreras (.211) had two singles and scored twice in the win.......The best-of-seven championship series begins Saturday between Magallanes and Caribes.

Dominican Winter League
Day off in the championship series with Gigantes leading Estrellas 3-2 in the best-of-nine series.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
Jalisco tied the series at a game apiece with a 5-0 win over Culiacan in the Mexican League championships. Former Cub farmhand Marquez Smith (2007-11) went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in the win.

Puerto Rican Winter League
Day off in the best-of-seven series with Mayaguez and Santurce tied at one game apiece.
