Bryant homers in Iowa win; 4/11 recap

Kris Bryant slugged his first homer of the year as Iowa clobbered Memphis 13-0 for their first win. Myrtle Beach rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th for a 4-3 win, South Bend lost in extras, and Tennessee fell despite Kyle Schwarber’s first homer.

Iowa (1-2) won their first game of the year as Kris Bryant had three hits, including his first homer of the year, to pace a 16-hit attack against Memphis (2-1).

Hitting Recap: I-Cubs faced 25 year-old Zach Petrick, a native of Morris, Illinois The right-hander was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2012 and made 20 starts last year for Memphis (7-6, 4.62 ERA, 115 IP). His brother. Billy, was a third-round pick of Cubs in 2002......Iowa pounded Petrick for 10 hits and six runs, knocking him out in the fifth. Bryant had a sacrifice fly in the first, singled, doubled, and then took a fastball down the middle deep over the left field wall for his first homer, a two-run shot in the 9th.......Chris Valaika hit Iowa’s first homer of the year, a two-run shot in the 6th, and finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. Adorn Chambers doubled twice and scored three times while RF Rubi Silva (.200) and 1B Mike Baxter (.455) had two hits each. SS Addison Russell (.308) singled, walked and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch, the top candidate to be called to Wrigley if the Cubs needs an emergency starter, made his 2015 debut Saturday night, throwing 85 pitches in 4.2 innings. He walked three and gave up three hits.....Blake Cooper fanned four in 2.1 shutout frames and got credit for the win,. Gonzalez Germen and Joseph Ortiz both tossed a scoreless inning.

I-Cubs News: The I-Cubs send Barret Loux to the mound on Sunday in the series finale. The right-hander will be making his first start since 2013, missing all of lat year with Tommy John surgery.

Kyle Schwarber homered for a 2-0 Tennessee (1-2) lead in the 4th but Mississippi (2-1) scored six times on one hit in the 7th as the Smokies committed four errors and walked three .

Hitting Recap: C Kyle Schwarber (.375) launched his first AA homer over the right field wall and finished 2-for-4. Schwarber threw out a runner but was charged with an error in the 7th. Pin-Chieh Chen (.250) singled in the Smokies other run, finishing 1-for-4. CF Albert Almora (.167), Christian Villanueva (.077) and Daniel Vogelbach (.300) were all 1-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena made his season debut after ending the 2014 season with the Smokies. Pena was solid, tossing six shutout frames and only allowing three hits. Zach Cates didn’t retire a hitter as he walked three and gave up a hit in the six-run 7th. Two of the five runs charged to Cates were earned, and he got charged with the blown save and took the loss. P.J Francescon threw the final two frames.

Smokies News: Rob Zastryzny, the Cubs second round pick in 2013 out of the University of Missouri, makes his debut on Sunday at Mississippi.

Billy McKinney beat the throw home after Victor Caratini’s broken bat grounder to second for the walk-off win as Myrtle Beach (2-1) scored three times in the bottom of the 10th to beat Wilmington (1-2).

Hitting recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.2321) started the year 0-for-9 but went 3-for-5 with a double and two-run single in the bottom of the 10th. LF Shawon Dunston (.400) had two singles and Caratini (.375) was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Pitching chart: Myrtle Beach pitchers fanned 17 hitters and only walked two. Paul Blackburn got the start and went five innings, allowing a run in the first. He fanned six and threw 80 pitches, 57 for strikes, and got five ground ball outs. Blackburn retired 13 of the last 15 hitters he faced.....Juan Paniagua turned in the most impressive outing of the minors thus far as the right-hander was hitting the gun at 96 and retired all nine he he faced, six on strikes.....Starling Peralta got the win but gave up two runs in the 10th on two hits and fanned five in over two innings.

Pelicans News: Chicago Cubs outfielder Chris Denorfia will begin a rehab stint with Myrtle Beach beginning on Sunday......Tyler Skulina, the Cubs 4th round pick in 2013, get the start for the Pelican on Sunday against Wilmington.

South Bend (2-1) scored a run in the bottom of the 8th and then tied the game in the bottom of the 9th but Bowling Green (1-2) scored twice in the 12th for the win in the series finale.

Hitting recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.250) got his first hit in the MWL and added two more hits and walked once, scoring twice. LF Charcer Burks (.231) doubled, tripled and scored twice while RF Jeffrey Baez (.417) stayed hot with a pair of doubles. 1B Jason Vosler delivered a RBI triple for his first MWL base hit and CF Rashad Crawford went 1-for-5 with a stolen base.

Pitching chart: Erick Leal made his MWL debut, yielding four runs, two earned on eight hits and two walks. He fanned three and got seven ground ball outs. Leal was 91-93 in the first and was throwing 90 in the 5th.....LH Jordan Minch worked around two walks in his inning of relief, and Ryan McNeil was impressive with 5 K in 3 IP, allowing an unearned run on one hit. McNeil, the Cubs 3rd round pick in 2012, missed all of 2013 after Tommy John surgery and spent last year at extended spring training and then threw 16 IP in eight games at Boise......Francisco Carrillo worked three innings but a hit batter, a triple, and a sacrifice fly plated two runs in the 10th. The right-hander retired the first six hitters he faced.

SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges makes his first professional start on Sunday as the SB-Cubs head to Dayton (Reds) for a three-game series. Hedges, the Cubs 26th round pick last year out of Azusa Pacific, went 2-1 with a 1.37 ERA in 12 relief appearances in the Arizona Rookie League in his debut season. He fanned 23 in 19.2 innings with two walks.
