Cubs April 12 Minor League Recap

Addison Russell hit his first homer and Kris Bryant added his second bomb as Iowa beat Memphis for the second straight day. Dan Vogelbach (pictured) had three hits in Tennessee’s win, South Bend improved to 3-1, and Myrtle Beach was blanked by Wilmington.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, Memphis (Cardinals) 2
Addison Russell, Kris Bryant and Jonathan Mota all homered as Iowa (2-2) evened the series with Memphis (2-2).

Hitting Recap: Addison Russell (.389) doesn’t seem to be having any problems with AAA and anyone who’s followed his career, this comes as no surprise. Northsiders #2 prospect for ’15 went 3-for-5 and slugged his first homer into the Memphis bullpen, a two-run shot in the 3rd off Ted Lyons.......3B Kris Bryant (.313) homered for the second straight game, a two-run blast in the 7th off relief pitcher Dean Kiekhefer. He finished 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and a RBI sacrifice fly.....RF John Andreoli (.182) hit leadoff and was on base three times with a pair of walks and a double......1B Jonathan Mota (.500) homered and finished 3-for-4 with 2 runs. Iowa had 12 hits, drew four walks, and fanned 10 times.

Pitching Chart: Iowa used five pitchers in the win. Seeing his first action since 2013 after Tommy John surgery, Barret Loux got the start, throwing 71 pitches (41 for strikes) in 3.2 innings. The former sixth overall pick in 2010 allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.....Drake Britton got the win in relief as the left-hander blanked the Redbirds for 2.1 frames. Britton got six of the eight hitters he faced on fly balls and walked one in his 26 pitch outing.....LHP Zac Rosscup fanned the side in the sixth, Armando River tossed a scoreless 8th and RHP Blake Parker worked a 1-2-3 9th.

I-Cubs News: Former Iowa Cub Marcus Hatley faced his former teammates twice in the series, tossing 1.2 scoreless frames........The I-Cubs head to New Orleans on Monday night (6 p.m. CST) with Yoanner Negrin getting the starting nod in the first of a four-game series.

Tennessee (2-2) scored six times in the first two innings and deadlocked the series with Mississippi (2-2).

Hitting Recap: Smokies pounded Mississippi pitching for 16 hits and also drew six walks in the win. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.400) led the attack with three, including a pair of doubles, and knocked in two runs. 3B Christian Villanueva (.167) plated three runs on two hits and CF Albert Almora (.235) had two hits and walked once. C Willson Contreras (.500), SS Elliot Soto (.214), and Anthony Giansanti (.500) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny fanned five in his AA debut but only lasted into the fourth inning as the left-hander was hit on the left foot by a ground ball. He left the game but walked off under his own power. Throwing 56 pitches before departing, Zastryzny allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks.....In his AA debut, Stephen Perakslis gave up a hit and a walk but kept the Braves off the board for 1.2 frames. Michael Jenssen worked around two hits and a walk in two innings......Hunter Cervenka cruised through the 8th but ran into troubles in the ninth, giving up a hit and two walks, which led to a run and Andres Santiago entering the game. After Santiago walked in a run, he got the final out for his first save.

Smokies News: RHP Frank Batista gets the start on Monday morning as the Smokies conclude the series with first pitch at 11 a.m. CST.

Carolina League—High A—Wilmington (Royals) 5, Myrtle Beach 0
Myrtle Beach (2-2) was held to three hits and Wilmington (2-2) got out of town with a split.

Hitting recap: Chris Denorfia made his first rehab start after starting the year on the DL for Chicago. He played left field and doubled in his first at-bat, fanned in is second trip before leaving the game after five innings. That was about the highlight for Myrtle Beach as they only had three hits, singles by RF Mark Zagunis (.200) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.267).

Pitching chart: Tyler Skulina made his first start, allowing a run on three hits in five innings. The former Kent State star threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes, fanned five, and had his fastball sitting 89-92......James Pugliese gave up two runs in the sixth and Matt Brazis, making his Cubs debut, allowed a pair in the 9th.

Pelicans News: The Salem Red Sox come to town on Monday night, 6:05 p.m., EST, and Myrtle Beach is yet to name a starter but Jen-Ho Tseng is the likely candidate.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 8, Dayton (Reds) 3
South Bend (3-1) opened the three-game series at Dayton with a win behind the bat of Rashad Crawford.

Hitting recap: LF Rashad Crawford (.400) was on base four times and knocked in three runs with two singles and a pair of walks. SS Gleyber Torres (.313) had two hits, walked once, and had two RBI. Torres was also charged with his first error....Jason Vosler delivered three singles and scored twice. CF Trey Martin (.154) tripled home a run and scored. South Bend wore down the Dayton staff with 11 hits and seven walks.

Pitching chart: Zach Hedges earned his first MWL win, allowing three runs, two earned, over five innings. He fanned two and got seven ground ball outs. Jasvir Rakar fanned three over two innings, James Norwood fanned a pair in his first action of the season, and Tommy Thorp threw a scoreless 9th.

SB-Cubs News: Trevor Clifton, the Cubs 12th round pick in ’13, makes his Midwest League debut Monday night as the SB-Cubs look to make two straight over the Dragons.
