Cubs April 13 Minor League Recap

Christian Villanueva hit a pair of homers to lead Tennessee to a win over Mississippi. Iowa won its third straight as Kris Bryant had three hits but committed two errors while Dayton downed South Bend. Myrtle Beach was rained out.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, New Orleans 1
Iowa (3-2) won their third straight as Yoanner Negrin and three relievers kept New Orleans’ (1-4) bats silent in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Kris Bryant had three singles to up his average to .381 but he also made a pair of throwing errors at third, the first leading to the Zephyrs only run of the game. LF Junior Lake (.227), C Rafael Lopez (.364) and 1B MkIe Baxter (.538) all had two hits. Baxter, a 30-year-old signed as a free agent, continued his hot start with a RBI, two walks, and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Yoanner Negrin didn’t get the win but he was solid for 4.2 innings, throwing 68 pitches, 47 for strikes. The Cuban right-hander allowed five hits, didn’t issue a free pass and fanned five......Iowa’s bullpen was almost perfect, allowing just a single. Gonzalez Germen tossed 1.1 scoreless frames, James Russell made his season debut with two perfect innings, and Joseph Ortiz earned the save in the ninth.

I-Cubs News: Donn Roach (0-0, 6.75) makes his second start in game two of the series at 6 p.m. CST in New Orleans.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 10, MIssissippi 4
Christian Villanueva slugged a pair of homers as Tennessee (3-2) won the deciding game of the series on get-a-way day over Mississippi (2-3).

Hitting Recap: Smokies pounded Braves pitching for 13 hits, including a pair of homers by 3B Christian Villanueva (.238). The Mexican native scored three runs, knocked in three, and walked twice. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.444/.565/.667) continued his torrid pace with a pair of doubles and a pair of walks. Albert Aimora (.261) raised his average with two hits and a RBI while Pin-Chieh Chen (.235) continues to produce out of the leadoff spot, going 1-for-5 with three RBI and is tied for team lead with seven. Smokies drew eight walks.

Pitching Chart: Frank Batista earned the win as a starter for the first time since his days as Peoria Cub back in 2012. The right-hander, who made several started this past winter in the Dominican, went six innings, allowing a run on three hits. He fanned three in his 65-pitch effort, throwing 49 for strikes. Fernando Cruz allowed three runs in two frames and Andres Santiago threw a scoreless ninth.

Smokies News: Tennessee has the day off and Corey Black (1-0, 1.80 ERA) heads to the mound in the season opener on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. EST.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach, Salem—Rained Out
Myrtle Beach and Salem were rained out of the first game of the series and will play a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 5:05 p.m. EST. Jen-Ho Tseng and Jonathan Martinez are the scheduled starters for the two seven-inning contests.



Midwest League—Low A—Dayton 6, South Bend 1
Dayton (2-3) scored three runs in the first and beat South Bend (3-1) to even the series.

Hitting recap: Cubs only had one extra base hit, a double by 1B Cael Brockmeyer (2-for-4) and that plated South Bend’s only run of the game in the first. They added seven singles but were just 0-for-3 with RISP. LF Charcer Burks (.250) went 1-for-3 and stole his second base. SS Gleyber Torres (.300) singled in four trips.

Pitching chart: Trevor Clifton’s MWL debut didn’t go according to plan as he only lasted two-thirds of an inning before reaching the Cubs organizational first inning pitch count. A 12th round pick in 2013, the 19-year-old had trouble finding his rhythm, issuing four walks and two hits that led to three runs. Jordan Minch went 3.1 frames of relief, allowing an unearned run with two strikeouts. James Farris pitched the final four frames, yielding two runs on five hits with four punchouts.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Williams makes his first start of the year on Tuesday night at Dayton. The Cubs 10th round pick out of East Carolina last year, the right-hander threw two innings of relief back on April 9 in his MWL debut against Bowling Green.
