Cubs April 18 Minor League Recap

Duane Underwood took a no-hitter into the 7th inning as Myrtle Beach swept a twin-bill from Winston-Salem and Albert Almora had five hits in Tennessee’s win over Pensacola to highlight Saturday night’s action. South Bend couldn’t hold its lead and Iowa was rained out.

Saturday night’s game was postponed and will be made up as a doubleheader on Monday with the first pitch set at 12:08 p.m. CST. Barret Loux is expected to take the mound on Sunday at 1:08 p.m.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Pensacola (Reds ) 1
Albert Almora had five hits and Felix Pena tossed six sold innings as Tennessee (6-3) beat Pensacola (2-6).

Hitting Recap: Albert Almora recorded the second five-hit game of his career with four singles and a double to raise his season average to .308. The big blast of the game came from pinch-hitter Willson Contreras, a three-run shot in the 6th. SS Elliot Soto (.250) had three hits and scored twice out of the leadoff spot. Stephen Bruno (.385) added a two-run single. C Kyle Schwarber (.250) was 0-2 and walked three ties while Daniel Vogelbach (.484) went 0-for-4 with a walk, snapping his eight-game hitting streak.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena (1-0, 0.75 ERA) followed up his six shutout innings in his ’15 debut with six more innings of one run ball for the first win of season. The right-hander held Pensacola to just four hits and walked two. He set six hitters down on strikes in his 72-pitch effort......After a pair of rough outings in his first two games, Fernando Cruz had his best appearance as a Cub, throwing three scoreless frames for his first save. He threw 57 pitches, 37 for strikes, allowing a hit and two walks with four strikeouts.

Duane Underwood took a no-hitter into the 7th in the opener and the Pelicans’ bats erupted for 12 hits in the night-cap to complete the sweep.

Hitting recap: GAME 1—Shawon Dunston (.318) not only went 2-for-3 with a two runs and his third stolen base, the left-fielder made two highlight reel grabs to keep Underwood’s no-hitter in tact. DH Billy McKinney, 3B Jeimer Candelario (.276), 1B Jacob Rogers (.308), and C Victor Caratini (.263) were all 1-for-3 with a RBI;......GAME 2— Five Pelican hitters had two hits each as they scored four times in the first to gain control early. McKinney seems to be getting comfortable in the box with two hits, two runs and a RBI. Benjamin Carhart (.182) knocked in three runs, including one on his first homer of the year and the Pelicans first since opening night. CF Jacob Hannemann (.242), RF Mark Zagunis (.296) and 2B Daniel Lockhart (.375) all had two hits and Rogers added 2 RBI.

Pitching chart: GAME 1—Duane Underwood (2-0, 0.82 ERA) was impressive in his second start as the right-hander took a no-hitter into the 7th. A walk in the second was the only baserunner through the first six frames as he retired seven on ground balls and four more on strikes. His bid for history was broken up with a leadoff single and another base hit ended Underwood’s night. Starling Peralta came in and walked the first hitter, and after a sacrifice fly, got a double play on a liner to end the game.....GAME 2—Paul Blackburn battled for five innings and got the win, despite allowing seven hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned four and recorded six ground ball outs. RHP Josh Conway earned his first save of the year with two perfect innings, including a pair of strikeouts. .

Pelicans News: The Pelicans have placed RHP Juan Paniagua on the DL and activated LHP Michael Heesch from the DL. Heesch spent the past two season in the Midwest League for Kane County, as s starter in ’13 and out of the bullpen in ’14 after missing the start of the season with an injury. Paniagua was lights out in his first appearance, fanning six in three innings and according to the Winston-Salem announcers was warming up last night in the bullpen but did not pitch.....Tyler Skulina (0-1, 1.80 ERA) gets the start on Sunday against Winston-Salem.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend, Great Lakes (Dodgers)
Despite a record crowd of 7.575 at Four Winds Field, the Loons scored four times in the top of the 9th to beat the South Bend.

Hitting recap: Cubs faced Dodgers ’14 first-round pick (#22 overall) Grant Holmes, a right-handed prep from South Carolina. SB-Cubs got two runs in the third and another in the fifth before Holmes departed, collecting five hits and a walk. LF Trey Martin (.293) continues to produce out of the leadoff spot, with a pair of doubles and a run. 2B Chesny Young (.263) delivered a RBI triple and scored when the throw to third went out of play. RF Jeffrey Baez (.263) doubled and scored while CF Rashad Crawford (.318) went 1-for-4 with a RBI single. SS Gleyber Torres (.242) was 0-for-2 but walked twice.

Pitching chart: 6-foot-4 Zach Hedges was dealing for the first five frames, holding the Loons to just a pair of singles. The right-hander fanned three in his second pro start. Hedges was the Cubs 26th round pick last year out of Azusa Pacific College......Tommy Thorps surrendered an unearned run over two innings and James Farris took the loss after giving up four runs in the ninth, two unearned, as a throwing error by Torres with two outs allowed the final two runs to score.

SB-Cubs News: Trevor Clifton returns to the mound on Sunday for his second start, after not making it out of the first inning in his debut. The Cubs 12th round pick in ’13 threw a scoreless inning of relief at Fort Wayne on April 16.
