The Chicago Cubs have selected the contract of Gonzalez Germen, a right-handed relief pitcher, from Iowa and optioned Matt Szczur to Des Moines. To make room on the 40-man roster for Germen, the Cubs transferred Jacob Turner to the 60-day DL.......The Cubs bullpen depth took another hit on Sunday as Iowa’s Blake Parker was placed on the DL with reported elbow problems and that sent off a relief pitcher shock wave across the organization. Hunter Cervenka was promoted to Iowa to replace Parker, Starling Peralta is headed from High A to Tennessee, Jasvir Rakkar is going from South Bend to Myrtle Beach, and David Garner had been promoted from extended spring training to the Midwest League.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Oklahoma City 4, Iowa 0
In a game shortened by rain to six innings, Iowa (4-5) only managed two hits and dropped their second straight at home to Oklahoma City (8-2).
Pitching Chart: Barret Loux took the loss but pitched pretty wells, allowing a run on three hits over five innings. He threw 83 pitches, 52 for strikes, walked three and sent five down on strikes.....Hunter Cervenka only got two outs in his AAA debut as two walks and a hit all came around to score.....Armando Rivero isn’t doing anything to get himself promoted to Wrigley as the Cuban right-hander struggled again. Entering the game with the bases loaded and two out, Rivero uncorked a wild pitch and then surrendered a two-run double. After a walk, the game was called due to rain.
I-Cubs Notes: C Tayler Teagarden has been promoted from extended spring training to the I-Cubs.
Southern League—AA—Pensacola @ Tennessee—Rained Out
Sunday’s series final against Pensacola was rained out and no make-up date has been set. Tennessee heads to Jackson for a five-game series with the Mariners AA affiliate.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach @ Winston-Salem—Rained Out
Sunday’s game at Winston-Salem was postposed due to rain and will be med on as a doubleheader on Saturday, May 9, at 4:30 p.m. EST. The Pelicans travel to Salem for a three-game set as Tyler Skulina and Jen-Ho Tseng are expected to be the starters in the first two games of the series.
Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes 4, South Bend 1
For the fifth time this season, South Bend’s bullpen blew a 9th inning lead as Great Lakes scored four times to hand the Cubs their second straight loss.
Hitting recap: The Cubs scored what looked like the winning run in the fifth on a RBI two-out single by Jesse Hodges, plating Jeffrey Baez. 3B Hodges (.222) and SS Gleyber Torres (.278) both finished with two hits.
Pitching chart: Trevor Clifton quieted the Loons for five innings, allowing a double and a walk. The right-hander, who didn’t make out of the first inning in his debut, fanned seven.......Tyler Ihrig was en route to a four-inning save but leadoff single, a stolen base and an out, ended his day. Ihrig got charged with one run, but only yielded two hits over 3.1 frames......Francisco Carrillo allowed a single to the first hitter he faced to tie the game and after another base hit gave the Loons the lead, Torres made another ninth inning throwing error in as many days, allowing two runs to score.
SB-Cubs News: The South Bend Cubs have promoted RHP David Garner, the Cubs 7th round pick in ’13 out of Michigan State......Ryan Williams is expected to make his second start of year in the series finale on Monday night.
