Cubs April 22 Minor League Recap

Tennessee and South Bend put on a hitting display on Wednesday night as the two affiliates combined for 29 runs and 38 hits. Jeremy Null continues to impress for South Bend as the right-hander has 17 K in 17 innings with 0 BB.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans 6, Iowa 3
A three-run 7th gave New Orleans (5-8) the lead for good as the Zephyrs evened the series with Iowa (6-7).

Hitting Recap: Jonathan Mota and Junior Lake both had a pair of hits and plated runs in the I-Cubs three-run 6th. 2B Arismendy Alcantara went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored while CF Matt Szczur finished 1-for-4. I-Cubs went 2-for-10 with RISP and left seven on base.

Pitching Chart: Tsuyoshi Wada allowed two runs over 5.2 innings but it could have been worse as he surrendered six hits and walks four. He was helped out by three Iowa double plays. Wada threw 89 pitches, 54 for strikes, and got six ground ball outs......Hunter Cervenka’s second AAA outing didn’t look any better than his first as the left-hander was charged with three runs in the 7th and took the loss. He walked four and allowed three hits in his 45-pitch outing (1.2 IP).....Joseph Ortiz threw the final two innings, allowing a run on a hit and two walks, throwing 26 pitches.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa activated 2B Arismendy Alcantara and have placed LHP Eric Jokisch on the disabled list.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 13, Jackson (Mariners) 4
Tennessee’s (7-5) bats erupted for 18 hits as Kyle Schwarber collected four and Daniel Vogelbach knocked in five runs in the win over Jackson (4-7).

Hitting Recap: Vogelbach (.432/.519/.705) continues to tee-off on AA pitching as the left-handed swinging first baseman slugged his second homer of the year, a two-run smash in the first, and added three more RBI....C Kyle Schwarber had his best AA game, going 4-for-6 with a RBI and a run scored. 2B Stephen Bruno (.361) had two hits and drove in two while Elliot Soto was 3-for-4 with two RBI. 3B Ryan Dent (.222) hit his first homer as a Cub and added a single. Smokies drew eight walks and were 8-for-20 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Ivan Pineyro (1-0, 4.02 ERA) worked into the sixth inning, allowing four runs on seven hits, one a three-run homer. The right-hander didn’t issue a free pass and fanned six in his 86-pitch effort.....Zach Cates tossed 1.2 scoreless frames with three strikeouts while Starling Peralta retired all five hitters he faced, three on strikes, in his AA debut.

Smokies News: Felix Pena (1-0, 0.75 ERA) will look to make it three straight quality starts as the right-hander takes the mound Thursday night in Jackson.

Carolina League—High A—Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 1
Salem (5-7) salvaged the final game of the series and handed Myrtle Beach (8-4) their first road loss of the season.

Hitting recap: Wes Darvill (.158), who replaced LF Shawon Dunston (.219) in the third, went 3-for-3 and stole his first base. DH Billy McKinney (.306) extended his hitting streak to a team-best six games with a single in four trips. Pelicans left eight on and were 0-for-6 with RISP.

Pitching chart: Jonathan Martinez (0-1, 3.27 ERA) didn’t have his best command, allowing four walks and five hits over five innings. He was charged with three runs and fanned one. Josh Conway (0-0, 4.76 ERA) surrendered a run in 1.1 innings of relief and Gerardo Concepcion (0-1, 1.35 ERA) retired all five hitters he faced, two on strikes.

Pelicans News: Daury Torrez (1-1, 6.52 ERA) makes his third start as the Pelicans return to Field for a four-game series with Winston-Salem (White Sox).

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 16, Lake County (Indians) 3
South Bend exploded for 20 hits as 11 different players got base knocks in the win over Lake County.

Hitting recap: Plenty of hitting stars in this game. 2B Chesny Young (.333) went 3-for-3, stole a base, and scored four times while 3B Jesse Hodges (.245) had two hits and drove in three runs. C Cael Brockmeyer (.442) continued his torrid pace with three hits and two RBI. CF Trey Martin (.255), SS Gleyber Torres (.250), LF Charcer Burks (.356) and RB Rashad Crawford (.303) all had two hits.

Pitching chart: Jeremy Null (2-0, 1.06 ERA) was the beneficiary of the offensive output but he didn’t need it as the right hander blanked the Captains for six innings. The 6-foot-7 right-hander has yet to walk a batter this season in 17 innings and he fanned four, bring his season total to 17 K. Lake County was limited to three hits and Null has allowed 12 hits this season.......LHP Tommy Thorpe pitched the final three innings to earn his first pro save. Last year’s 8th round pick allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk.

SB-Cubs News: Erick Leal (1-0, 2.70 ERA) get the start Thursday night against Great Lakes.
