Cubs April 23 Minor League Recap

Here's a look at Thursday night's action from the Cubs four minor league affiliates.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans (Marlins) 9, Iowa 2
New Orleans (6-8) scored six times in the first and coasted to its second straight over Iowa (6-8).

Hitting Recap: Iowa only managed five hits and scored both of their runs on SS Chris Valaika’s two-run homer in the 8th. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.125) went 1-for-4 with a run and CF Matt Szczur (.333) finihsed 0-for-4. 3B Christian Villanueva (.200) singled in four at-bats.

Pitching Chart: Making an emergency start after a promotion from AA, Jeffry Antigua allowed nine runs, six in the first, and didn’t make it out of the 4th inning after 90 pitches. He allowed seven hits (one homer), walked four, and fanned a pair...Andres Santiago made his Cubs AAA debut and tossed 3.1 scoreless frames with a pair of strikeouts. He allowed two walks and three hits.....Michael Wagner fanned two in a scoreless 8th and Armando Rivero pitched the 9th without any further damage.

I-Cubs Notes: Javy Baez reported to Mesa on Thursday and will see action in extended spring training games before joining the I-Cubs......Barret Loux (0-1, 3.12 ERA) get the start on Friday night in the series finale against New Orleans.......Jeffry Antigua and Andres Santiago were both promoted from Tennessee to Iowa.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Jackson (Mariners) 2
Tennessee (8-5) reached double-digits in hits for the second straight night off Jackson (4-8) pitching.

Hitting Recap: Kyle Schwarber collected three hits, including his second homer of the season, a solo shot tn the 8th. The DH also doubled and ended the night with 2 RBI. 3B Ryan Dent (.290) was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and C Willson Contreras had two doubles, walked twice and scored two runs. Daniel Vogelbach (.426) extended his on-base streak to 13 games with a double and three walks. CF Albert Almora (.273) was 0-for-5 with awalk.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena made his third start and got plenty of swing-and-miss, fanning eight in 5.2 innings. The General plated two runs on four hits and two walks. Pean threw 87 pitches (56 for strikes) and got six ground ball outs.....Matt Brazis made his Cubs AA debut and got the final out of the six, allowing an inherited runner to score, and then got two outs but allowed two walks in the 7th before leaving. P.J. Francescon put out the fire the 7th and two more in the 7th before departing after working around a hit and two walks. Michael Jensen pitched a scoreless 9th.

Smokies News: Relief pitcher Matt Brazis has joined the Smokies from Myrtle Beach and Jeffrey Antigua and Andres Santiago have ben promoted to Iowa.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Winston-Salem (White Sox) 0
Daury Torrez shutout the Dash for seven innings as Myrtle Beach improved to 9-4.

Hitting recap: CF Jacob Hannemann (.280) had three hits, stole his 6th base, scored twice and knocked in a run hitting leadoff. RF Billy McKinney (.325) continues to square up baseballs with a pair of hits while Benjamin Carhart went 1-for-3 with two RBI. LF Mark Zagunis (.268), 3B Jeimer Candelario (.260) and SS Carlos Penalver (.235) all singled.

Pitching chart: Blanking the Dash for seven innings, Daury Torrez had his best outing of the season, allowing only four hits with no walks. The right-hander retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced and recorded 7 ground ball outs and six fly outs. He only needed 74 pitches and threw 54 for strikes......Michael Heesch worked around a walk and a single in the 8th and Jasvir Rakkar worked a 1-2-3 9th with a pair of punchouts.

Pelicans News: Duane Underwood (2-0, 0-.82 ERA) gets the start in the second game of the series against Winston-Salem.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 10, Lake County (Indians) 0
For the second straight night, South Bend feasted on Lake County pitching, collecting a dozen hits, while Erick Leal and Tyler Ihrig combined for the shutout.

Hitting recap: RF Yasiel Balaguert led the hit parade with a double, a triple and three RBI in his fourth game back from starting the season on the DL. C Cael Brockmeyer (.426) added a two-run double (8) and SS Gleyber Torres (.275) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. CF Trey Martin (.267) and 2B Chesny Young (.340) both had two hits while 1B Gioskar Amaya (.229) was 1-for-3 with two runs and a RBI. Young has an 8-game hitting streak.

Pitching chart: Erick Leal (2-0, 1.80 ERA) fanned six over five shutout innings as the Captains only got three hits and drew one walk off the right-hander. LHP Tyler Ihrig earned his first save, tossing one-hit ball with five punchouts over the final four frames.

SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges (1-0, 1.80 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night as the Cubs head to Fort Wayne for a three-game series.
