Cubs April 24 Minor League Recap

Here’s a look at Friday night’s action around the Cubs affiliates.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 2, New Orleans (Marlins) 1
Iowa’s bullpen blanked the Zephyrs for six plus inning as Iowa (7-8) ended its two-game skid against New Orleans (6-9)

Hitting Recap: Matt Szczur and Mike Baxter provided the only offense Iowa would need with RiB singles. Baxter went 2-for-3 with a walk and Szczur finished 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. C Rafael Lopez had a pair of hits and

Pitching Chart: Barret Loux got the start and only lasted 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and an unearned run before departing. The I-Cubs bullpen we light s out. Blake Cooper fanned three in 3.1 shutout frames to recored the win while Hunter Cervenka fanned three hitters in the 7th. James Russell recorded his second save with four punchouts in two scoreless innings.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee @ Jackson (Mariners)
Friday night’s game in Jackson was rained out. No make-up date has been set. Tennessee returns home on Saturday for a five-game series with Chattanooga (Twins) and the minors top prospect in Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano. Rob Zastryzny, who was activated from the DL, will get the start on Saturday. The left-hander was hit on the foot on a come backer and had to leave the game in his AA debut on April 12.



Carolina League—High A— Winston-Salem (White Sox) 3, Myrtle Beach 2
Winston-Salem(6-9) beat Myrtle Beach (9-5) for the first time in five games.

Hitting recap: Myrtle Beach scored both their runs in the fifth to tie the game on an RBI single from Kevin Brown (.250) and a sac fly from Billy McKinney (.349). McKinney added a pair of singles.

Pitching chart: Duane Underwood needed 76 pitches to get through five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits. He walked two and fanned three, recording seven ground ball outs....Gerardo Concepcion gave up a run in two innings and took the loss. Tayler Scott continues to shine in a relief role as the right-hander tossed two scoreless frames with four punchouts.

Midwest League—Low A— Fort Wayne (Padres) 5, South Bend 1
Four Fort Wayne pitchers quieted the South Bend bats to just four hits.

Hitting recap: Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first with a double from Chesny Young (.339) and a RBI single from C Gioskar Amaya (.212). SS Gleyber Torres (.278) added a single and DH David Bote (.273) doubled.

Pitching chart: Zach Hedges (1-1, 3.00 ERA) surrendered seven hits over five frames as the TinCaps scored three times. Hedges fanned three and got seven ground ball outs. James Norwood tossed a pair of shutout relief innings and James Farris allowed two run in the 8th.
