Tennessee won its fourth straight behind a four-run 5th and the arm of Frank Batista.
Hitting Recap: Consecutive RBI singles from Albert Almora (.306), DH Kyle Schwarber (.349), 1B Dan Vogelbach (.444) and C Willson Contreras (.341) gave the Smokies all the offense they would need. Almora, 2B Stephen Bruno (.340) and LF Bijan Rademacher (.275) had two hits each. The Smokies are hitting .297 as a team.
Pitching Chart: Frank Batista is making the most out of his opportunity as a starter. The right-hander fanned eight over seven innings, lowered his ERA to 1.02 and improved to 2-0 in his third start (17.2 IP, 4 BB, 16 K). He allowed a solo homer, one of three hits and walked two....Zach Cates tossed a scoreless 8th and Starling Peralta gave up a run in the ninth on a hit and a walk.
Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem (White Sox) 6, Myrtle Beach 1—6 Innings
In a game shortened by rain, the Dash scored early and often to take the series from Myrtle Beach.
Hitting recap: Pelicans managed only five hits, two each from Jacob Hannemann (.328) and Jacob Rogers (.240). With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and one out, Rogers singled home Hannemann but Mark Zagunis was thrown out at the plate. A rain delay was called after that play and the game was eventually called.
Pitching chart: Dash peppered Tyler Skulina (0-2, 7.07 ERA) for eight hits over four innings that resulted in six earned runs. The right-hander walked a pair and fanned five....Josh Conway worked two scoreless frames with two walks and a strikeout.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Fort Wayne (Padres) 1
Three South Bend hurlers—Ryan Williams (6 IP), Francisco Carrillo (1.2 IP) and Tommy Thorpe (1.1 IP)—combined for a one-hitter to take the series at Fort Wayne.
Hitting recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.305) pumped his average over .300 with three hits, a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored in the win. CF Trey Martin (.250) was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored out of the leadoff spot and Cael Brockmeyer (.379) knocked in a pair.
Pitching chart: Ryan Williams (2-0, 0.46 ERA) continues to dominate Midwest League hitters. The right-hander tossed six-one hit innings and posted another game of not issuing a walk. The Cubs 10th round pick last year out of East Carolina fanned three and sports a BAA of .147. Francisco Carrillo loaded the bases on walked before departing in the 8th with two outs. Tommy Thorpe got the SB-Cubs out of the bases-loaded jam but not before a passed ball on Gioskar Amaya allowed a run to score. Thorpe pitched a 1-2-3 9th.
