Cubs April 28 Minor League Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates from Tuesday, April 28, including Jacob Hannemann’s impressive AA debut.

Outfield shuffle
With Albert Almora going on the 7-day disabled list on Tuesday with a possible concussion he suffered while diving for a ball, Almora told Smokies broadcaster Mick Gillispie that it was more like whiplash. Jacob Hannemann was promoted to AA from Myrtle Beach. Trey Martin is headed to Myrtle Beach after starting the year in South Bend. The SB-Cubs currently have three outfielders but Jeffrey Baez is eligible to come off the 7-day DL.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Game 1—Iowa 7, Colorado Springs (Brewers) 1; Game 2—Iowa 6, Colorado Springs (Brewers) 3
Arismendy Alcantara homered in both ends of the twin bill to help lead Iowa to the sweep of Colorado Springs.

Hitting Recap: Game 1—Arismendy Alcantara hit his first AAA homer of the year, added a RBI triple; and scored twice. Jonathan Mota had two hits and plated a pair while John Andreoli was 1-for-2 and knocked in his first AAA run. Game 2—Alcantara hit his second homer of the day, a solo shot in the 5th. The big blow of the game was Rafael Lopez’ three-run double in the 7th that proved to be the difference. Andreoli had a pair of triples and scored twice while Mike Baxter was 2-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching Chart: Game 1—Donn Roach (2-0, 2.31 ERA) scattered seven hits over six innings, limiting the Sky Sox to just one run He walked three and fanned just one, coaxing 14 ground ball outs....Joseph Ortiz worked scoreless seventh.; Game 2—Making his first start since going on the DL, Eric Jokisch went 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks....Blake Cooper got the final out in the 4th, Hunter Cervenka pitched a scoreless 5th, and Yoanner Negrin got the first two outs in the sixth....James Russell (2-0, 0.00 ERA) got the win, retiring all four hitter he faced.

I-Cubs Notes: I-Cubs activated LHP Eric Jokisch from the 7-day disabled list.....OF Junior Lake was called up to Chicago and RHP Brian Schlitter was sent down to Iowa....Cubs have yet to name a starter for Thursday’s match-up with Oklahoma City (Dodgers) on Kris Bryant Shirsey Night.

Southern League—AA— Tennessee 7, Chattanooga (Twins) 6
Jacob Hannemann had three hits in his AA debut and Kyle Schwarber slugged his 4th homer to lead Tennessee to the win over Chattanooga.

Hitting Recap: Jacob Hannemann’s AA debut started with a bang as the outfielder homered in his first at-bat, singled the second time up, and finished the game 3-for--4 with two runs and a stolen base.....DH Kyle Schwarber (.388) is really heating up, slugging his 4th homer and adding a two-run double....Bijan Rademacher slugged his first AA homer, a two-run shot, and added a single and scored twice....C Willson Contreras (.327) had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Ivan Pineyro struggled with his command, walking five and allowing three runs on four hits over five innings.....Fernando Cruz only got two outs in the 6th, surrendering three runs, including a solo homer. Zach Cates (1.1 IP), Stephen Perakslis (1 IP) and P.J. Francescon 1 IP) kept the Lookouts off the board the rest of the game.

Smokies News: Jeffry Antigua still hasn’t unpacked his bags as he was sent from Iowa backdown to Tennessee.....RHP Matt Brazis, who was recently promoted from Myrtle Beach, was placed on the 7-day DL.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach, Wilmington (Royals)
Wilmington tied the game in the bottom of the 9th and then delivered the walk-off win in the 10th to take the first game of the series.

Hitting recap: A bases loaded walk to C Victor Caratini (.200) and a RBI single from LF Mark Zagunis (.231) were the Pelicans only offense. Eight different players had hits but Wes Darvill’s double was the only one that went for extra bases. Trey Martin went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his High A debut

Pitching chart: Jen-Ho Tseng retired the first nine hitter he faced before Wilmington scored a run in the 4th. Tseng went five frames, allowed three hits, didn’t walk anyone and fanned two, throwing 73 pitches, 44 for strikes... James Pugliese earned his second hold with two shutout frames but Rasvir Rakkar allowed the tying run in the 9th, his second inning of work......Tayler Scott (1-1, 2.08 ERA) took the loss as two walks and a two-out single gave the Blue Rocks the walk-off win in the 10th.

Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan (Tigers) 8, South Bend 5
West Michigan (9-10) scored three runs in the 6th to take the series opener over South Bend (9-10).

Hitting recap: Charcer Burks (.328) had three of South Bend’s 8 hits, scored once and knocked in his 8th run of the season.....Gleyber Torres doubled home a run, his 10th RBI.....2B Chesney Young (.299), 1B Jason Vosler (.240) and CF Rashad Crawford (.268) all had a hit and a RBI

Pitching chart: Jake Stinnett didn’t make it out of the 3rd, allowing five runs on seven hits. He walked two, recorded two strikeouts and threw 72 pitches, 41 for strikes. It marked the second time in four starts Stinnett hasn’t made it out of the third inning....Tyler Ihrig (0-1, 2.13) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk in 3.1 frames. The left-hander fanned three in his 47-pitch outing, 31 for strikes.....David Garner ran his scoreless streak to 5.1 innings with two shutout frames.
