Cubs May 2 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates including Kyle Schwarber’s 10th inning homer to give Tennessee a win.

Pacific Coast League—AAA— Oklahoma City (Dodgers) 4, Iowa 1
Oklahoma City made the most of their five hits beating Iowa for the third straight game.

Hitting Recap: Cubs only run came in the 7th when Rubi Silva led off with a double and scored on 2B Arismendy Alcantara’s RBI single. Alcantara (.237) went 2-for-3 with two walks and his first stolen base. Silva (.236) finished 2-for-4 and CF John Andreoli (.260) doubled in four trips. The I-Cubs fanned 12 times and were 1-for-10 with RISP. Christian Villanueva was screwed out of a two-run homer in the 4th. The home plate umpire called the ball hit down the LF line fair, and after Villanueva circled the bases, the umps met and then ruled it foul. Cubs manager Marty Pevey was ejected.

Pitching Chart: Tsuyoshi Wada (0-3, 3.68 ERA) only needed 78 pitches to work his way through seven strong innings. A 1st inning error by Alcantara led two a pair of unearned first inning runs but the left-hander was unhittable after the first, retiring the final 16 hitters he faced.....Yoanner Negrin worked the final two frames, allowing a pair of runs in the 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Donn Roach (2-0, 2.31 ERA) looks to snap the losing streak as he takes the mound Sunday afternoon against the Dodgers.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Birmingham (White Sox) 5—10 innings
Kyle Schwarber homered in the 10th inning to give the Tennessee the road win at Birmingham.

Hitting Recap: After the Smokies allowed a run in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings, C Kyle Schwarber (.349) made sure the hometown fans went home disappointed, slugging his 5th homer over the right field wall in the 10th. Schwarber finished 1-for-5 at the plate and was 1-for-5 throwing out base runners, and committed his second error......Daniel Vogelbach (.377) snapped out whatever slump he was in, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and a run batted in....RF Bijan Rademacher (.230) gave the Smokies a 4-2 lead in the 5th with a opposite field three-run homer, his first.

Pitching Chart: Corey Black fanned 10 Barons on Saturday night but came away with a non-decision is his 99-pitch effort. The right-hander was charged with four runs, three earned, allowing six hits and two walks in 5.2 innings.....Starling Peralta worked a pair of scoreless frames but the Barons tied the game in the 9th off P.J. Francescon (1-0, 1.00 ERA). The right-hander got at double play in the 10th to end the game with runner on first and third with one out.

Smokies News: LHP Rob Zastryzny has been placed on the 7-day DL and right-handed relief pitcher Andres Santiago has been sent from Iowa to Tennessee.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Lynchburg (Indians) 4
The Pelican grabbed a 5-1 lead and survived an 8th inning rally to beat Lynchburg.

Hitting recap: LF Mark Zagunis (.262) got the Pelicans on the board in the third with his first homer, a solo shot to left-center as Myrtle Beach made the most of their six hits. Scoring four times in the 4th with two outs, CF Trey Martin (.222) delivered a RBI single and SS Carlos Penalver (.245) followed with a two-rue double. The final run scored on a wild pitch.

Pitching chart: Paul Blackburn (2-1, 4.05 ERA) worked five efficient innings, yielding a run on six hits and a walk. He got seven ground ball outs and fanned two in his fourth start.....LH Gerardo Concepcion was cruising along, recording all six outs on strikes in his first two innings of relief. The 8th inning was a different story as the first four hitters reached and he left with game with bases load. Tayler Scott allowed two hits to make it a one-run game but got Indians top prospect Clint Frazier to ground into a base loaded double play to end the threat......Jasvir Rakkar worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save since joining the team from South Bend.

Pelicans News: Tyler Skulina (0-2, 7.07 ERA) looks to get back on track as the 2014 4th round pick out of Kent State gets the start on Sunday.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Fort Wayne (Padres) 4
Yasiel Balaguert delivered a three-run double in the bottom of the 8th as South Bend rallied for their first comeback win of the season.

Hitting recap: For the second straight night, Yasiel Balaguert (.212) cleared the bases with an extra base hit, this time a three-run double in the bottom of the 8th to give the SB-Cubs the win......Chesny Young continues to provide solid contact at the plate with a pair of run-scoring singles and is hitting .351 over his lat 10 games......Gleyber Torres extended his hitting streak to six games and scored three times. The 18-year-old also swiped his 8th base.....C Cael Brockmeyer (.356) had a pair of hits and scored once.

Pitching chart: Trevor Clifton (1-1, 2.70 ERA) had a decent outing but a solo homer, a walk and two errors led to three runs in the 4th. The right-hander worked five frames, allowed just three hits, walked two and fanned three in his fourth start.....Soft-tossing left-hander Tyler Ihrig (1-1, 2.30 ERA) got the win in relief, allowing a run on four hits over three innings.....James Farris earned his first pro save, fanning the side in the 9th.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Williams (2-0, 0.46 ERA) gets the start on Sunday against Fort Wayne at Four Winds Field.
