Cubs May 8 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates including another strong performance by Iowa’s Donn Roach.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Oklahoma City (Brewers 0)
Donn Roach tossed six shutout innings as Iowa blanked Oklahoma City.

Hitting Recap: I-Cubs had nine hits in the win, two each from John Andreoli and Mike Baxter. Andreoli had a pair of doubles and plated a run while Javier Baez (.235) went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Donn Roach has proved to be the ace of the Iowa staff so far as the right-hander improved to 4-0 with six shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.17. He allowed four hits, walked two and fanned four in his 83-pitch outing. He had a game score of 66 and got 10 ground ball outs......Armando Rivero worked ? an inning and Drake Britton got the final out of the 7th in his first game since coming off DL. Hunter Cervenka worked a scoreless 8th and Joseph Ortiz pitched the 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: The Iowa Cubs have activated LHP Drake Britton from the 7-day disabled list and currently have 24 active players and two players on rehab.....Eric Jokisch (1-0, 4.00 ERA) makes his fifth start on Saturday night against Oklahoma City. .

Three Pensacola pitchers blanked Tennessee on five hits to even the series.

Hitting Recap: Willson Contreras is having his best season as a pro, hitting .329 and added a pair of single Friday night. Albert Almora (.293) was 0-for-4 and after a hot start in AA, Jacob Hannemann is batting .188 after an 0-for-4 night.

Pitching Chart: Ivan Pineyro fanned 10 over seven innings but took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits. The right-hander threw 94 pitches, 64 for strikes and had a game score of 63....Starling Peralta worked a scoreless 8th.

Smokies News: Felix Pena (2-0, 1.78 ERA, 30.1 IP, 12 BB 27 K) gets the start on Saturday night in Pensacola.

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem (White Sox) 10, Myrtle Beach 6
Winston-Salem scored five times in the second and third to take the opening game of the series.

Hitting recap: Jacob Rogers went 3-for-4, slugged his 5th homer and knocked in a pir while Billy McKinney stayed red-hot with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBI. Mark Zagunis and Trey Martin had two hits each.

Pitching chart: After going five innings in each of his first four starts, Paul Blackburn (2-2, 5.73 ERA) only lasted two frames, as the Dash peppered the right-hander for five runs on five hits and two walks, all with two outs in the second. They also swiped three bases in the inning. Ben Wells gave up five runs in the third while Josh Conway (2 IP), James Pugliese (2 IP) and Zach Cates (1 IP) kept the Dash off the board.

Pelicans News: Jeimer Candelario had his first day off as he had logged every inning at third prior to Friday night.... Carolina League Pitcher of the Week Tyler Skulina (1-2, 4.95 ERA, 20 IP, 6 BB, 22 K) goes in game one while Jen-Ho Tseng (1-0, 4.15 ERA, 17.1 IP, 3 BB 10 K) gets the starts the nightcap.

Midwest League—Low A—Bowling Green (Rays) 5, South Bend 2
After spotting South Bend a 2-0 lead in the first, Bowling Green scored the games next five runs to even the series.

Hitting recap: Cubs out hits the Hot Rods but were just 2-for8 with RISP. Yasiel Balaguert went 2-for-4 while Gleyber Torres (.327) and Chesny Young (.310) both singled. Rashad Crawford extended his hitting streak to seven games with two singles.

Pitching chart: Trevor Clifton only allowed two hits over five innings but the right-hander gave up two runs along with two walks. He finished with a game score of 58 and was charged with a wild pitch (allowed a run to score) and a balk......James Norwood saw his first action since coming of fetch DL, tossing a scoreless inning.....Francisco Carrillo (0-5, 5.29 ERA) took the loss, allowing two runs in the 7th and another in the 8th.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Williams (2-0, 0.35 ERA, 25.2 IP, 2 BB, 19 K) takes his league-leading ERA to the mound on Saturday in the series finale.
