Cubs May 11 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates including Jake Stinnett, last year’s second-round pick, earning his first career win.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Colorado Spring (Brewers) 13, Iowa 7
Colorado Springs (11-20) scored seven runs in the 8th to earn a split in the four-game series with Iowa (15-16).

Hitting Recap: Iowa made the most of their six hits as C Rafael Lopez (.254) went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. CF Arismendy Alcantara (.231) doubled in five trips and 2B Javier Baez (.244) was 1-for-3 with a RBI and two walks. LF John Andreoli (.295) stayed hot with a triple, two RBI, three stolen bases, and two runs scored. Anderoli is hitting .351 in his last 10 games with 8 SB.

Pitching Chart: Tough day on the mound for Iowa for everyone except Hunter Cervenka, who tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball but did allow one of the two inherited runners to score. He gave up three hits and fanned two......Dallas Beeler continues to struggle to find his groove in his fourth rehab start, allowing six runs on five hits and four walks in four plus innings. He’s allowed 21 hits, 13 walks and 18 earned runs over 15.2 innings.....Blake Cooper (2-1, 1.65 ERA) suffered his first loss, allowing four unearned runs on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.....Joseph Ortiz surrendered three runs, all coming on a homer.

I-Cubs Notes: Tsuyoshi Wada (0-3, 3.25 ERA) get the start on Tuesday night in the series opener at Principal Park with Nashville.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Montgomery (Rays) 0
Jeffry Antigua and two relievers blanked Montgomery as Tennessee took the opening game of the series.

Hitting Recap: Daniel Vogelbach (1-2) and Willson Contreras (1-4) hit back-to-back homers in the 8th to lead the Smokies. Kyle Schwarber (0-3) and Stephen Bruno (2-4) added RBI.

Pitching Chart: Jeffry Antigua won his first AA start of the year, holding the Biscuits to two hits and three walks over five innings. He fanned three and threw 82 pitches.....Michael Jensen struckout out three in two frames for his first hold while P.J. Francescon earned his save with three punchouts over the final two innings.

Smokies News: Tennessee has a day-night doubleheader with Montgomery on Tuesday as the Smokies salute Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Winston-Salem (White Sox) 5
Myrtle Beach (20-12) rallied for the win to take the best-of-five series from Winston-Salem (14-18).

Hitting recap: Billy McKinney was not only named the Carolina League Player of the Week on Monday he went to work on this week’s award with two hits and three RBI. Mark Zagunis went 2-for-4 with a RBI while Daniel Lockhart and Carols Penalver both went 1-for-3 and scored twice. The Pelicans scored five runs in the final three at-bats

Pitching chart: Daury Torrez was decent for five innings but the first three batters of the sixth reached and two scored as the right-hander finished with a line of 5 IP, 9H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K.....James Pugliese earned the win, allowing a run over two innings. Zach Cates has yet to be scored on the High A as the right-hander fanned a pair in two innings to earn his first save.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Lansing (Blue Jays) 4
South Bend scored five times in the first to innings and hung on for the win over Lansing in the series opener.

Hitting recap: South Bend collected 11 hits, drew three walks and went 4-for-8 with RISP. Yasiel Balaguert slugged his first homer on the year, a two-run shot in the second to give the Cubs the lead for good. Chesny Young had two hits,m scored twice and drove in a run while Jason Vosler, Gioskar Amaya and Jesse Hodges all had two hits.

Pitching chart: Jake Stinnett gave up seven hits and wailed four in five innings but limited the damage to four runs and earned his first career win. He fanned three and finished with a game score of 36...Tommy Thorpe earned his second hold with two scoreless frames and James Farris collected his fourth save with four strikeouts over the final two innings. Farris has fanned 25 hitters in 15.2 innings with only 4 BB.
