Cubs May 15 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates including another strong pitcher performance from Myrtle Beach’s Duane Underwood.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Nashville (A’s) 5
Homers by John Andreoli and Rubi Silva helped lead Iowa (18-17) over Nashville (13-22) in the series finale.

Hitting Recap: RF John Andreoli led off the first with a solo homer and finished 2-for-3 with three runs, two walks and two stolen base (15). CF Rubi Silva crushed a two-run shot in the 6th and SS Javier Baez (.311) went 3-for-4 with two RBI. The 22-year-old is hitting .342 (13-for-38) over his last 10 games with eight knocked in. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.213) went 0-for-4 with a walk and LF Junior Lake (.257) was 0-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch (2-1, 3.00 ERA) threw 90 pitches over six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 54......Blake Cooper fanned four but allowed a run in 1.1 innings and the only hitter LHP Hunter Cervenka faced in the 7th, singled. Gonzalez Germen got the final five out for his first save, despite allowing a run on three hits and two walks.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs head to Oklahoma City for a four-game series with the Dodgers AAA affiliate. Carlos Pimentel (2-2, 4.28 ERA), Dallas Beeler (0-2, 10.34 ERA) and Donn Roach (4-0, 2.03 ERA) are scheduled to start the first three games........OF Adron Chambers has been placed on the bereavement list.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Montgomery (Rays) 4
Behind a big game at the plate from Kyle Schwarber, the Smokies (19-15) downed Montgomery (15-20) for the fourth time in five games.

Hitting Recap: C Kyle Schwarber (.333) slugged his 7th homer (tops in Cubs minors), added two more hits including his 6th double, scored three times and knocked in three runs. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.360) swatted a pair of doubles (11), added two RBI and walked twice while LF Albert Almora (.284) went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and a RBI. SS Elliot Soto (.295) was 2-for-4, CF Jacob Hannemann (.232) had three hits and stole a base, and RF Billy McKinney (.333) doubled in a run in five at-bats. Smokies were 1-for-13 with RISP and left nine on.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena (3-1, 2.76 ERA) fanned eight over seven innings to earn the victory. He allowed four runs on eight hits (one homer) and one walk. Pena threw 96 pitches in the outing, 68 for strikes, and finished with a game score of 52......P.J. Francescon (1-0, 0.61 ERA) worked the final two innings to record his fifth save.

Smokies News: Jackson (Mariners) comes to town for a six-game series including a twin-bill on Sunday. The Smokies have not released starting pitchers for the series and its likely an arm from extended spring training or one of the lower levels comes to help with the twin-bill on Sunday.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 9, Carolina (Braves) 4
The three-game day lay-off didn’t hurt Myrtle Beach (21-12) as they pounded out 15 hits to take the opener at Carolina (19-13)

Hitting recap: RF Mark Zagunis (.308) had three hits and drove home two while LF Pin-Chieh Chen went 3-for-3, scored twice, and knocked in two in his first game for the Pelicans. SS Carlos Penalver (.224) delivered a two-run double in the 6th while 3B Jeimer Candelario (.264) and DH Benjamin Carhart had two hits each.

Pitching chart: Duane Underwood (4-0, 1.09 ERA) only needed 77 pitches to work five shutout innings. The right-hander allowed four hits, didn’t walk anyone, and fanned three. He recorded seven ground ball outs and had a game score of 62.....Juan Paniagua tossed two shutout innings as he continues to deal his fastball in the mid- to upper-90s. The right-hander allowed two hits, walked one and put one down on strikes.....Josh Conway surrendered a run in an inning and Jasvir Rakkar gave up two runs in the 9th.

Pelicans News: Two teams are back at it Saturday night and Paul Blackburn (2-2, 5.73 ERA) makes his sixth start.

Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 1, South Bend 0
South Bend (17-18) came out on the short end of a pitching dual, falling to Great Lakes in the series opener.

Hitting recap: Cubs got their third look at Dodgers ’14 first-round pick Grant Holmes, a 19-year-old right-hander who was still pitching in high school a year ago. Holmes shut the Cubs down for six innings, allowing just two hits and two walks......South Bend only had four hits on the night, two from LF Charcer Burks (.311) and one each from 2B Andrew Ely and 3B Jesse Hodges. Burks also swiped his 9th base.

Pitching chart: Trevor Clifton (1-2, 2.60 ERA) took the loss but turned in one of his better outings of the season, allowing four hits over six innings with seven punchouts. He gave up a run in the 4th and finished with a game score of 64......LHP Jordan Minch threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Williams (2-1, 0-85 ERA, 31.2 IP, 0.76 WHIP, 2 BB, 25 K) gets the start on Saturday night, his second against the Loons, and 7th overall. The Cubs 10th round pick last year out of East Carolina blanked Great Lakes for 5.2 innings on April 20, allowing eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts to record his first win of the season.
