Cubs May 21 Minors Recap

Rough night for the Cubs’ stateside affiliates as all four lost but Chesny Young (pictured) collected his fifth straight multi-hit game for Myrtle Beach. SS Gleyber Torres left South Bend's game with an apparent injury.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Tacoma (Mariners) 5, Iowa 3
Tacoma (18-23) spoiled the Cubs debut of pitchers Felipe Paulino, Daniel Schlereth and Yoervis Medina taking the first game of the series against Iowa (19-20).

Hitting Recap: LF Arismendy Alcantara (.238) slugged his team leading 5th homer and also added a triple when the left fielder lost track of the ball......C Taylor Davis (.358) continues his doubles campaign as the backstop was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and now has seven two-baggers in his last three games. DH Taylor Teagarden and 1B Chris Valaika added RBI.

Pitching Chart: 31-year-old Felipe Paulino made his Cubs debut on Thursday night. The right-hander signed with the Cubs during spring training and he’s made 65 big league starts and appeared in 97 games over six years for four different teams—Astros, 2007-’10 Royals 2011-12, Rockies 2011, and White Sox 2014. Paulino issued five walks in his debut and surrendered four runs on four hits in four innings. He threw 83 pitches, only 41 for strikes, and and fanned four.....Daniel Schlereth worked around two walks in his Cubs debut, throwing a scoreless 5th.....Yoervis Medina made it three straight Iowa pitchers making their Cubs debut as the right-hander acquired from Seattle, fanned one, gave up two walks and allowed a hit in 1.1 innings.....Blake Cooper allowed a run in 1.1 frames and Armando Rivero tossed a scoreless 9th.

Southern League—AA— Montgomery (Rays) 4, Tennessee 3
Tennessee (22-19) was held to just four hits and dropped the series opener to Montgomery (18-23).

Hitting Recap: Billy McKinney had half of Tennessee hits, going 2-for-3. Willson Contreras (.305) added a RBI double in the 7th and Daniel Vogelbach go credit for a RBI in the 9th on a sacrifice fly. DH Kyle Schwarber (.305) was 0-for-2 with a walk and has an OBP of .436. SS Bryant Flete made his AA debut, going 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Jeffry Antigua (2-2, 3.21 ERA) allowed four runs, including a three-run third, on eight hits and walk in six innings. The soft-tossing lefty threw 79 pitches and had a game score of 40. Gerardo Concepcion and Michael Jensen both threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Smokies News: Smokies ace Frank Batista (4-0, 1.28 ERA) gets the start on Friday night in Montgomery.......OFs Albert Almora and Bijan Rademacher both missed Thursday night’s game after a nasty collision on Wednesday. Neither player went to the hospital and neither was placed on the DL per Smokies broadcaster Mick Gillispie.

Frederick (22-19) scored two runs in the top of the 8th to take the series from Myrtle Beach (24-14).

Hitting Recap: Myrtle Beach collected 13 hits in the loss but left 10 men on......DH Chesny Young (.480) collected his fifth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double , a walk and a RBI.....RF Mark Zagunis (.328) went 4-for-4 out of the leadoff spot and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He doubled, scored once, and knocked in a run, his 13th. Daniel Lockhart (.212) had two singles and scored a run while CF Trey Martin (.213) was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Daury Torrez (3-2, 3.86 ERA) threw six solid innings, surrendering two runs on six hits, including a solo homer. He threw 81 pitches, 61 for strikes, recorded eight ground ball outs, and finished with a game score of 54......Tayler Scott (2-2, 2.11 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, allowing two runs in the 8th on three hits. He fanned two and threw a walk pitch......Michael Heesch got the Pelicans out of the 8th inning jam and tossed a scoreless 9th.

Pelicans News: Duane Underwood (4-0, 1.09 ERA) makes his 7th start on Friday night as the Pelicans face Potomac (Nationals) for the first time.

Midwest League—Low A— Lansing (Blue Jays) 17, South Bend 2
Lansing (24-17) scored in six of the eight innings they hits and completed the three game sweep of South Bend (18-23).

Hitting Recap: LF Charcer Burks (.319) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single, one of six SB hits.....C Cael Brockmeyer hits his second homer, a two-run shot in the 4th to plate the only runs...2B Andrew Ely (.250) went 2-for-4 and scored a run.....SS Gleyber Torres (.326) singled in two trips but after hitting a grounder to short in the top of the third, limped down the line and was taken out of the game.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (1-3, 3.31 ERA) fanned six over five innings but got charged with six runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks. He had a game score of 40....David Garner got only one out in the 6th and he surrendered seven hits and two walks which led to eight earned runs.....Francisco Carrillo gave up three runs in 1.2 frames and infielder David Bote pitched a scoreless 8th.

SB-Cubs News: South Bend returns home Friday night and send Ryan Williams (3-1, 0.72 ERA) to the mound against first-place Bowling Green.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 12, Rays 6
Cubs (2-2) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the 8th to rally for the win and split the series with the Rays (2-2).

Hitting Recap: The Cubs sent 14 hitters to the plate in the 8th and plated 10 runs as Gustavo Polanco, Roberto Vahlis and Jose Rojas plated two runs in the inning. Francisco Gray, Luis Ayala and Rafael Narea all knocked in runs in the 8th. Vahlis finished 3-for-5 with two doubles while Rojas went 2-for-5.

Pitching Chart: Freddy Tineo got the start and tossed four shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk. Andres Bonalde gave up five runs over two frames and Eugenio Palma got the win, working two innings while giving up on runs. Juan Rengifo worked a scoreless 9th.
