Cubs May 22 Minors Recap

Ryan Williams tossed eight innings of shutout ball as South Bend ended their five-game skid before a record crowd. Myrtle Beach’s Duane Underwood won the battle of fop pitching prospects while Iowa’s Javier Baez and Tennessee’s Kyle Schwarber both homered in their team’s victories.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 10, Tacoma (Mariners) 9
Catcher Rafael Lopez delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th as Iowa (20-20) beat Tacoma (18-24) to even the series.

Hitting Recap: 3B Christian Villanueva (.277) led the offense with four hits, two runs and one RBI as every Iowa player had at least one hit, collecting 17 in the game.....Lopez (.241) finished 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and 1B Taylor Davis (.386) stayed red hot with three singles.....SS Javier Baez (.291) slugged his third homer, a two run shot, and added a double off the wall. RF John Andreoli was 2-for-4 with one knocked in and Rubi Silva added a two-run double. Iowa went 7-for-12 with RISP and scored seven times in the 2nd.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Pimentel didn’t miss many bats, allowing eight runs over the first four innings. He surrendered two homers and fanned five.....Joseph Ortiz tossed two scoreless frames and Gonzalez Germen we charged with a blown save, givin gup an uneared run in the 7th. LHP Drake Britton tossed a scoreless 8th and Brian Schlitter got the win, throwing a 1-2-3 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Dallas Beeler (0-3, 10.53 ERA) is no longer rehabbing and has been added to the roster. Hopefully he can get return to his 2014 form, when he made his big league debut for the Cubs.

Frank Batista held Montgomery to just two hits in six plus innings and Kyle Schwarber homered as Tennessee beat the Biscuit.

Hitting Recap: Kyle Schwarber launched his 10th homer in the 5th inning, a three-run shot deep over the right field wall. The catcher also walked twice and has a slash line of (.306/.442/.620)......2B Bryant Flete collected his first AA hit, a single, and went 2-for-4. SS Elliot Soto (.290), Anthony Giansanti and Jacob Hannemann all had one hit and scored a run. Giansanti delivered a RBI in the 9th.

Pitching Chart: Frank Batista is liking life as a starter. After spending the past several years working out of the bullpen in the Cubs organization, the right-hander improved to 5-0 and lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.11, allowing two hits and an unearned run in 6.1 innings. He fanned seven, walked one, and finished with a game score of 73.....P.J. Francescon got the final two outs of the 7th for his second hold and C.J. Edwards tossed two no-hit innings for his 4th save. Edwards fanned four but issued two walks in his 40 pitch outing, 21 for strikes.

Smokies News: Smokies haven’t named a starter for Saturday night’s tilt in Montgomery but face Blake Snell (6-0, 0.00 ERA), who hasn’t allowed an earned run in 46 AA innings.

Myrtle Beach (25-14) roughed up Potomac pitching prospect Reynaldo Lopez for five runs in the third and took the opener from Potomac (18-23).

Hitting Recap: Pelicans faced the Nationals #3 rated prospect, Reynaldo Lopez, a 21-year-old right-hander from the Dominican. Pelicans made Lopez worked and broke through in the 3rd as four hits and walk plated five runs and chased Lopez from the game after 61 pitches.....Pin-Chieh Chen ripped a two-run double to tie the game and 1B Jacob Rogers followed with a two-run single. Kevin Brown capped off the inning with a double, scoring Rogers......Mark Zagunis (.328) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the 8th and had a pair of RBI......Daniel Lockhart (.222) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while CF Trey Martin (.231) and C Victor Caratini (.215) had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (5-0, 1.38 ERA) allowed two solo homers but tossed six innings, surrendering six hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts, including the side in the sixth. He threw 88 pitches, 55 for strikes and had a game score of 54.....Juan Paniagua worked a scoreless 7th but gave up a homer and two runs in the 8th. Jasvir Rakkar got the final five outs for his sixth save, tops in the Carolina League.

Pelicans News: No starter has been named for Saturday night’s game against Potomac at Field.

Ryan Williams held Bowling Green to two hits over eight innings and South Bend hung on in the 9th before a record crowd of 7,786 at Four Winds Field to snap a five-game losing streak.

Hitting Recap: DH Cael Brockmeyer (.313) ripped a pair of doubles, drew a walk and scored once....C Justin Marra (.169) swatted his 4th homer, a solo shot in the 4th, while Jeffrey Baez had two hits and knocked in a run. RF Yasiel Balaguert (.202) added a RBI single and scored a run

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams turned in one the top pitching performances of any Cubs minor leaguer on Friday night as the right-hander tossed eight innings of shutout ball and lowered his league-leading ERA to 0.59. He fanned three, allowed two singles , and didn’t issue a free pass in the gem. The Cubs 10th round pick last year out of East Carolina coaxed 16 ground ball out and had a game score of 81......Brad Markey got tagged for four hits and two runs in the 9th and James Farris got the final out for his 5th save.

SB-Cubs News: No starter has been named for Saturday night......Gleyber Torres was not in the starting lineup after leaving Thursday night’s game with an apparent injury but did take batting practice before with game, according to Mike Monaco.

Venezuelan Summer League—Phillies 8, Cubs 3
Phillies (2-3) used a five-run 7th to down the Cubs (2-3).

Hitting Recap: SS Rafael Narea (.261), C Gustavo Polanco (.368) and RF Luis Ayala (.333) all had two hits for the Cubs who went just 1-for-9 with RISP. LF Jose Rojas (.273) and 3B Francisco Garay (.188) plated runs. Rojas swiped his third base.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Rodriguez got the start and allowed a run over five innings with four strikeouts....Bryant Molina got charged with a blown save, allowing a two-run homer in the 6th and Harrison Bermudez got lit up for five runs in his two innings of work and took the loss. Alex Pacheco fanned a pair in a scoreless 9th.
