Cubs June 4 Minors Recap

Five South Bend Cubs were named to all-star team, Chris Denorfia made a rehab start in Tennessee and Christian Villanueva continues to punish baseballs in the Pacific Coast League.

Five named MWL All-Stars
South Bend may be in 7th place in the 8-team Eastern Division but that didn’t stop the Cubs from getting five players named to the Midwest League All-Star game, including three starters. SS Gleyber Torres (.318/.397/.392 0 HR, 30 RBI, 8 SB), OF Charcer Burks (.282/.345/.356, 0 HR, 20 RBI, 10 2B, 15 SB) and C Cael Brockmeyer (.287/.374/.421, 3 HR, 24 RBI, 13 2B) will all start for the East squad June 23 in Peoria. Starting pitcher Jeremy Null (5-1, 1.78 ERA, 50.2 IP, 3 BB, 40 K, 1.09 WHIP) and reliever James Farris (2-2, 2.57 ERA, 15 G, 6 SV, 21 IP, 7 BB, 30 K, 1.19 WHIP) were also named All-Stars.

Denorfia joins Tennessee for rehab
Chris Denorfia started his second minor league rehab stint of the season, this time at AA Tennessee. After going on the DL back in April, Denorfia played in two games for Myrtle Beach before joining the Cubs. He appeared in 12 games for Chicago (.429/.455/.476) before re-aggravating the hamstring and landed back on the DL May 5. The 34-year-old has spent the last month in Mesa, seeing actin in extended spring training games.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa, 8 Albuquerque (Rockies) 2
Christian Villanueva homered for the third straight game and Eric Jokisch helped his own cause with a long ball as Iowa (28-25) beat Albuquerque (22-23).

Hitting Recap: 3B Christian Villanueva (.301) extended his hitting streak to six games and homered for the third straight night, going 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. He doubled, walked, and slugged his 7th homer.....C Rafael Lopez (.265) had three hits and knocked in a run while Eric Jokisch hit solo homer, the first of his career. He also added a RBI sacrifice bunt. 2B Chris Valaika smacked a pair of doubles while CF Arismendy Alcantara (.286) doubled, walked three times, and stole two bases (10). 3B Javier Baez was 0-for-5 with 4 K.

Pitching Chart: Jokisch (3-2, 3.66 ERA) gave up two runs on six hits, one homer, and three walks, leaving after 78 pitches. He recorded two strikeouts and had a game score of 46. Drake Britton tossed three strong innings of relief, limiting the Isotopes to a walk in his 30-pitch outing. Gonzalez Germen threw a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (0-2, 7.71 ERA) gets the start in the series finale on Friday night.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Chattanooga (Twins) 1
Tennessee made it four straight over Chattanooga and moved into sole possession of first place.

Hitting Recap: Chris Denorfia made his first rehab start in the minors since going on the DL May 8. He doubled and scored in the first and walked with the bases loaded in the 7th, finishing 1-for-3. DH Kyle Schwarber (.327) had two singles, one plating a pair of runs in the Smokies four-run 7th. C Willson Contreras (.326) went 1-for-4 with a RBI and 1B Wes Darvill plated the final run with a RBI groundout in the 8th.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena (5-2, 3.32 ERA) fanned seven over seven innings, allowing only a solo homer, one of four hits. He issued one walk and had a game score of 71 in the 85-pitch outing....Stephen Perakslis was perfect in the final two innings, recording four ground ball outs and a pair of strikeouts.

Smokies News: Tennessee looks to make it five-in-a-row over the Lookouts as they send Ivan Pineyro (4-3, 3.36 ERA) to the mound on Friday night.

Carolina League—High A—Carolina (Braves) 3, Myrtle Beach 2
An error and two hits plated a pair of runs for Carolina (24-26) in the 6th and proved to be the difference in the win over Myrtle Beach (31-19).

Hitting Recap: C Victor Caratini (.243) extended his hitting streak to seven games and knocked in both runs on a bases loaded walk in the first and a RBI double in the third. Acquired from the Braves last summer, the 21-year-old is hitting .351 (13-for-37) over his last 10 games. DH Chesny Young (.371) had two hits while LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.281) added two singles and a walk. CF Trey Martin (.235) saw his first action since May 23 with a single in four at-bats.

Pitching Chart: Daury Torrez (4-3, 3.91 ERA) matched his season-high with six strikeout but took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. He allowed a solo homer in the third, and threw 88 pitches, 55 for strikes. James Pugliese worked two scoreless frames and Zach Cates retired all three hitters he faced in the 9th.

Pelicans News: Pelicans are having a tribute to Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks on Friday and Saturday as they wear special “Let’s Play two” jerseys for both doubleheaders. Duane Underwood (5-1, 1.60 ERA) and Paul Blackburn (4-2, 4.26 ERA) start on Friday night.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 6, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 4

Hitting Recap:Earlier in the day, Cael Brockmeyer was named the starting catcher for the East squad in the MWL All-Star game, then he went out and played like an all-star. Brockmeyer had three extra base hits, two doubles and a triple, and knocked in a pair in the win. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.296) added another multi-hit game to his resume, his 8th in last 11 games, and Rashad Crawford (.278) had two hits and a RBI, and is 9-for-his-last 24. RF Kevin Encarnacion (.333) and 2B Andrew Ely (.300) also knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton worked around a two-run homer in the 4th and went five innings for his second victory of the season. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and fanned five with a game score of 48. Right-hander Brad Markey struckout five in three innings, allowing a run on two hits for his second hold. All-Star James Farris pitched the ninth for his 7th save.

SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (1-2, 6.27 ERA) makes his ninth start on Friday night against the Kernals in the series finale.

Dominican Summer League—Rangers II 5, Cubs 1
Rangers (2-3) collected 13 hits and ended the Cubs (3-2) three-game winning streak.

Hitting Recap: SS Yeiler Peguero had four of the Cubs eight hits and raised his average to .526. DH Fidel Mejia (.333) went 2-for-4 and scored the only run of the game in the fifth on 2B Franklin Tineo’s sacrifice fly, his team-leading 8th RBI.

Pitching Chart: 17-year-old left-hander Pablo Ochoa (0-1, 6.75 ERA) made his pro debut and allowed three runs on seven hits. He fanned three and gave up a homer. Jesus Tejada also made his professional debut, allowing two runs on six hits and walk in four innings.

Cubs (8-7) won their fourth straight and beat the Tigers (4-11) for the third time in five games.

Hitting Recap: LF Jose Rojas (.290), signed as a free agent during the off-season, went 2-for-3 and knocked in three while 1B Fidel Matos (.227) had two hits with two RBI. C Gustavo Polanco (.290) went 2-for-4 with a double and CF Luis Ayala (.304) walked twice, scored a run and swiped his 10th base. Jhonny Bethencourt (.304) was on base three times with a single and two walks.

Pitching Chart: 17-year-old Freddy Tineo got the start and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk over four innings. He gave up a homer and had a game score of 48. Bryan Molina got credit for the win, allowing a run on two hits in two innings with two strikeouts. Harrinson Bermudez threw a scoreless 7th for his first hold and Juan Rengifo tossed two shutout frames for his third save.
