Cubs June 11 Minors Recap

Cubs pitching prospect Pierce Johnson made his 2015 debut, working three scoreless innings in AA. The Smokies and Myrtle Beach both lost but the VSL and DSL Cubs extended their winning streaks. Three Pelicans were named all-stars on Thursday.

Three Pelicans named All-Stars
Starting pitchers Duane Underwood and Jonathan Martinez, along with outfielder Mark Zagunis will represent Myrtle Beach on the Carolina League All-Star roster as they face all-star from the California League on June 23 in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Pitching coach David Rosario and assistant coach Chris Gutierrez will also participate. Underwood is 5-2 with a 2.08 ERA in 10 starts and is third in the league with a 0.99 WHIP. Second to Underwood in WHIP at 0.94, Martinez is 4-1 with a 2.76 ERA Zagunis leads the league with a .459 on-base percentage and is also first in walks and third in runs (36).

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa vs. Colorado Springs (Brewers)—Rained Out
Iowa and Colorado Springs were rained out and the two teams will play a double-header on Friday night with the first game beginning at 5 p.m. CST. Felipe Paulino and Carlos Pimentel are scheduled to pitch the twin-bill.......I-Cubs Notes: Iowa’s Eric Jokisch was placed on the 7-day disabled with a back strain and Yoanner Negrin was added to the roster from extended spring training.

Southern League—AA— Jacksonville (Rays) 5, Tennessee 2
Jacksonville (27-33) scored three times in the bottom of the 8th to beat Tennessee (32-28).

Hitting Recap: Smokies scored both of their runs in the 7th on three straight singles, the third a RBI variety from Bijan Rademacher, and then Elliot Soto laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Jacob Hannemann. Soto and Hannemann had two hits each and Daniel Vogelbach went 0-for-4 and is hitless in his first two games back from the DL. C Willson Contreras left the game in the fourth inning as Kyle Schwarber pinch-hit and doubled. No word on why Contreras left the game.

Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson (NorthSiders Report # 5 Cubs prospect) made his season debut after a lat strain sidelined the right-hander since spring training. After a few outings at extended, Johnson got the start at Jacksonville Wednesday night . In his 54-pitch outing, right-hander tossed three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk as the Suns had runners on every inning. Johnson fanned three, got four fly ball outs, and had a game score of 54. While he’s coming back from an injury, its an important stretch of his career as he’s Rule 5 eligible at the end of the season and the Cubs will have a decision to make on the 24-year-old.......Andres Santiago allowed two runs over two innings and Michael Wagner got tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs in the 8th. Wagner went 2.2 innings, fanned three and allowed four hits. Gerardo Concepcion got the final out but not before allowing three hits and a walk, giving up a run in addition to an inherited runner scoring.

Smokies News: Southern League All-Star Frank Batista (6-1, 1.49 ERA) is scheduled to get the start on Friday night in Jacksonville.

Carolina League—High A—Frederick (Orioles) 7, Myrtle Beach 4
A five-run sixth gave Frederick (29-31) the win over Myrtle Beach (35-24).

Hitting Recap: Pelicans won the battle of the hits (9-6) but lost where it counts. RF Mark Zagunis (.308), 3B Chesny Young (.373) and C Victor Caratini (.253) all had two hits while Pin-Chieh Chen knocked in a pair.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn was perfect for the first three innings but four hits in the 4th led to a pair of runs and then the first four hitters of the sixth all reached, and all eventually scored. Blackburn fell to 4-3 and saw his ERA pop up to 4.66 after his 10th start. He didn’t get any help in the 6th as the Pelican committed three errors. Michael Heesch allowed both inherited runners to score and threw two innings without allowing a hit. Josh Conway threw a 1-2-3 9th.

Pelicans News: Lynchburg comes to town on Friday night and they face Tyler Skulina (2-4, 3.75 ERA).......3B Jeimer Candelario has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 6, and RHP Fernando Cruz has returned from extended spring training. Candelario is hitting .266 in 50 games and leads all Cubs minor leaguers with 16 doubles.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend vs. Burlington—Rained Out
Thursday night’s game was rained out and the two squads will play a twin-bill Friday night. Trevor Clifton (2-4, 3.83 ERA, 9 GS, 42.1 IP, 30 H, 20 BB, 44 K, .200, 1.18 WHIP) and Jake Stinnett (2-2, 6.10 ERA, 9 GS, 38.1 IP, 46 H, 27 BB, 32 K, .309 BAA, 1.90 WHIP) are scheduled to start for South Bend.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 5, Brewers 4—13 innings
Rafael Mejia stole home in the bottom of the 13th to give the Cubs in the win over the Brewers and their fifth straight

Hitting Recap: Cubs took full advantage of seven walks and four errors. Richard Nunez went 2-for-5 with a RBI while Chris Pieters walked four times. Wander Feliz had a hit and a RBI while Mejia reached on an error in the 13th, took second on a walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and swiped home with bases load and one out.

Pitching Chart: Deibi Torres got roughed up for eight hits and four runs in his four inning start. The Cubs bullpen was outstanding. Eury Ramos tossed two scoreless frames, Andri Rondon blanked the Brewers for three more innings on just one hit with four K, and Luis Aquino got the win with four innings of one-hit ball with six punchouts. Aquino has not been scored on in nine ininngs (4 games) and has 12 K.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 3, Rays 1
Cubs pitching blanked the Rays for eight innings for their second straight win over the first-place team.

Hitting Recap: RF Luis Ayala (.257), DH Gustavo Polanco (.256) and 3B Francisco Garay (.162) all knocked runs as the Cubs won their 4th straight. SS Rafael Narea (.218), LF Jose Rojas (.286) and C Roberto Vahlis (.203) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Rodriguez turned in another solid performance, fanning seven over five shutout innings. He allowed two hits and had a game score of 70. Alex Pacheco was perfect for three innings, putting six hitters down on strikes. Juan Rengifo recorded his VSL best 6th save but allowed his second earned run in 18 innings.
