A two-time all-Big Ten third baseman, Blake Headley will continue his baseball career with the Cubs. The two sides agreed to a deal on June 18 and Headley is currently in Mesa at the Cubs complex.
While he only hit five homers during his four-year college career, the Omaha native did show gap power, leading the Huskers with 18 doubles and five triples this year, and finished his college career with 32 two-baggers. His slash line of .271/.345/.425 in ’15 was down slightly from .323/.370/.413 his junior season but showed the plate discipline the Cubs seek from their college bats.
A career. 294 hitter in 158 starts at Nebraska, Headley also excelled off the field, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors three times and the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2015. He saw most of his time at third base, but played first during his junior season. He committed just 18 errors in 718 chances during his career, posting a .975 fielding percentage.
Headley’s college experience, left-handed bat, and plus glove give him an excellent chance to see playing time at Boise and/or South Bend, as the Cubs lower levels aren’t flush with third basemen. The 22-year-old may be able to turn some of those college extra base hits into homers as he makes the switch to the wooden bat.
