Cubs June 21 Minors Recap

Strong pitching performances from Tennessee’s Ryan Williams, Myrtle Beach’s Daury Torrez and South Bend’s Tommy Thorpe help lead their teams to wins on Sunday in the final game of the first half for all three squads.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock 14, Iowa 8
Round Rock (42-27) used a seven-run third inning to help beat Iowa (36-33).

Hitting Recap: Cubs tied the game in the second at 4-4 with a pair of two-run homers by Chris Valaika (4) and Rubi Silva (6) in the second. CF Silva (.273) finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI while LF Junior Lake (.273) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.267) had three hits and knocked in a run.

Pitching Chart: Drake Britton got hammered for 11 runs on eight hits and four walks in 2.2 innings. Joseph Ortiz surrendered two runs in 1.1 innings, Jeffry Antigua gave up one in three frames and Blake Cooper pitched a scoreless 8th.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has Monday off and host Omaha on Tuesday with Felipe Paulino (1-3, 4.97 ERA) on the mound. C Kyle Schwarber is expected to be in the line-up.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Mississippi 2
Tennessee (39-30) ended the first half on a high note, beating Mississippi (33-35).

Hitting Recap: 2B Stephen Bruno (.290) went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI to lead an offense that collected 12 hits and drew five walks. CF Jacob Hannemann (.220) had two singles while 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.285) was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. Mike Olt doubled off the top of the wall, his only hit in three at-bats. He walked twice and scored two runs. All-Star catcher Willson Contreras (.333) had two hits and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams (3-0, 2.53 ERA) was efficient in his six innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk in the 67-pitch outing. He fanned two.......Cubs reliever Neil Ramirez struckout the side in the 7th in his second rehab appearance. Tayler Scott gave up a run in the 8th and Michael Jensen threw a scoreless 9th.

Smokies News: Its the All-Star break. Willson Contreras and Daniel Vogelbach will start for the North All-Stars on Tuesday in Montgomery. Corey Black, P.J. Francescon, Frank Batista, and Felix Pena were also named to represent the North Squad. Kyle Schwarber was selected to start in the game but has been promoted to AAA.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Lynchburg 1
Myrtle Beach (41-28) capped off their first-half title with a win over Lynchburg (33-37).

Hitting Recap: Every starter had a hit, Pin-Chieh Chen and Jeimer Candelario had two. Jacob Rogers launched his 9th homer over the right field wall while Candelario, Victor Caratini and Carlos Penalver all plated runs.

Pitching Chart: After giving up 22 hits in his last two starts (11 IP), right-hander Daury Torrez won his final start of the first half, holding the Hillcats to a run over six innings. The 22-year-old threw 84 pitches, 57 for strikes, induced nine ground ball outs, walked two, and fanned five. Fernando Cruz eared his first hold with two shutout innings and Jasvir Rakkar worked around a walk nada single in the ninth for this 9th save.

Pelicans News: The first-half camps will send four playrs to the Carolina League-California League All-Star game—right-handed starters Duane Underwood and Jeremy Martinez, outfielder Mark Zagunis and third baseman Jeimer Candelario.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, West Michigan 1
Tommy Thorpe won his first pro start and the South Bend closed out the first half with the win over West Michigan.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored three times in the third, two coming on a two-run homer off the bat of 3B Jesse Hodges (.249). 3B Jason Vosler (.256) added a RBI single before the frames was over. SS Gleyber Torres (.312) added two sacrifice flies while Hodges and CF Rashad Crawford (.289) finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Tommy Thorpe (2-4, 4.33 ERA), the Cubs 10th-round pick last June out of the University of Oregon, won his first pro start, blanking the Tigers affiliation over five innings. The left-hander fanned five and allowed four hits. Daniel Lewis gave up a run in two frames and Michael Wagner threw two perfect innings with 2 K.

SB-Cubs News: Cubs complete the first half 29-38, last in the Eastern Division and 11.5 games behind first-place Lansing (42-28). South Bend starts the second half on Thursday, June 25, with a four-game series at Lake County.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Everett 9, Eugene 8
Everett scored nine runs in the 6th to beat Eugene for the third time in four games.

Hitting Recap: Ian Happ slugged his second homer and also double in his third pro game. The 21-year-old walked, drove in a run and is hitting. 308. Eloy Jimenez delivered a career-high 4 RBI as the 18-year-old went 2-for-5 and Varonex Cuevas had a career-high four hits, scored twice and drove in a run. DH Ricardo Marcano scored three times, singled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch.

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino blanked the Aqua Sox for five innings, recording six strikeouts and retired 12 straight until a leadoff double in the sixth. A fielder’s choice grounder plated a run and after his 7th strikeout, he departed. Everett greeted relief pitcher Alex Santana with six straight hits, the seventh leaving the yard to cap off the nine-run inning. Corbin Hoffner threw the final two frames, allowing two hits to go along with a strikeout.

Emeralds Notes: Andin Diaz, a 22-year-old lefty from the Dominican, gets the start in the final game of the series on Monday night.

Cubs (12-7) had Sunday off and find themselves two games behind the first-place Rangers I in the Boca Chica North. SS Yeiler Peguero leads the Cubs with a .343/.450/.507 slash line in 18 games.



Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs
Cubs (16-14) are two games behind the first-place Rays and had Sunday off. Juan Rengifo leads the league in wins (4) and saves (6). Jose Rojas (25) and Jose Gonzalez (22) are 1-2 in RBI.
