Null All-Star MVP, 6/23 recap

South Bend’s Jeremy Null earned Midwest League All-Star MVP honors as the right-hander fanned three West al-stars in the first. Kyle Schwarber made his AAA debut, Cubs prospects shined bright in the other All-Star games, and Eugene held its home opener as the Cubs new affiliate in the Northwest League.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Omaha 4, Iowa 2
Omaha spoiled the AAA debut of Kyle Schwarber as they used a three-run first to beat Iowa.

Hitting Recap: Kyle Schwarber made his AAA debut on Tuesday night and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. The Storm Chasers swiped three bases and Schwarber cut one runner down at second.....Mike Olt continued his rehab at Iowa and went 0-for-3 and made an error.....John Andreoli swatted his second homer and finished 1-for-4 while Ryan Dent doubled in a run. Iowa only had four hits and were just 1-for-2 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino (1-4, 4.67 ERA) fanned six in 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk. He threw 92 pitches, over 60% for strikes, and had a game score of 52......Gonzalez Germen gave up a run in 1.1 frames and Carl Edwards Jr. fanned three in two scoreless frames.

I-Cubs Notes: Carlos Pimentel (5-4, 3.45 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park against the Storm Chasers.....The Cubs have sold the contract of Yoanner Negrin to Yucatan in the Mexican League. RHP Armando Rivero has been placed on paternity leave.

Southern League All-Star Game—AA—Tennessee
1B Daniel Vogelbach slugged a three-run homer to help lead the North All-Stars to a 9-0 victory. The Smokies first baseman went 1-for-4 with a walk. C Willson Contreras singled and walked in three plate appearances. Frank Batista and Felix Pena both worked a scoreless inning of relief while Corey Black got the final two outs of the 8th, one on strikes. P.J. Francescon issued a pair of walks and struckout a hitter in the 9th.

Smokies News: Tennessee has Wednesday off and are back in action on Thursday night in Mobile for the first of a five-game series with the Bay Bears. The Smokies return home July 1 for three games with Montgomery.

Carolina League All Star Game—High A—Myrtle Beach
Mark Zagunis went 2-for-5 with a RBI and Jeimer Candelario had two hits, including a double, but it wasn’t enough as the California All-Stars beat the Carolina squad 9-2. Duane Underwood gave up a run in the second on a hit and walk while Jonathan Martinez worked a scoreless 7th.

Former Kane County Cougar and Daytona Cub Zack Godley got the start for the California League on Tuesday night. Godley was traded along with RHP Jeferson Mejia to Arizona for catcher Miguel Montero. Pitching out of the bullpen for the Cubs as a minor leaguer, Godley, a starter at the University of Tennessee, has returned to the rotation and gone 8-3 with a 2.27 ERA for Visalia in 12 starts. He’s fanned 78 in 75.1 IP with 19 BB and a .228 BAA. On Tuesday night, the former 10th round pick in ’13 only lsat ? of an innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk.

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach has Wednesday off and return to action on Thursday with a three-game series at Carolina and then three more at Winston-Salem. The Pelicans play 16 of their next 19 games against the Mudcats and the Dash. They went 9-6 vs. Winston-Salem and 7-5 against Carolina in the first half.

Midwest League All-Star Game—Low A—South Bend
Jeremy Null’s 6-2 record and 2.33 ERA earned the 6-foot-7 right-hander the start for the East All-Stars on Tuesday night in Peoria. The Cubs 15th round pick last year out of Western Carolina struckout the side in his only inning, allowing a single, and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player as the East beat the West 5-0. All three South Bend position players were in the starting line-up. RF Charcer Burks went 0-for-1 but walked and drove in a run on a ground out in the 4th. SS Gleyber Torres went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and C Cael Brockmeyer struckout in both plate appearances. James Farris fanned both batters he faced in the ninth.

SB-Cubs News: The Cubs return to action on Thursday at Lake County for the first of four games with the Captains.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Boise 4, Eugene 2
Boise spoiled Eugene’s home opener jumping out to a 4-0 lead and holding on.

Hitting Recap: Emeralds out-hit the Hawks but only plated two runs, both coming in the fourth. CF Ian Happ (.350) led off with a double and scored on DH Alberto Mineo’s double. 2B Frandy Delarosa (.190) knocked in Mineo (.214) with a sacrifice fly. Happ went 2-for-3 with a walk while SS Ho-young Son (.273) had two hits and a walk, hitting leadoff.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay, a 20-year-old right-hander from Venezuela, got the start and was on a pitch county, lasting only two innings. He fanned four and was charged with an unearned run on two hits. Greyfer Eregua surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits and a walk. The 21-year-old fanned seven in four innings. Pedro Araujo tossed three one-hit innings with four strikeouts to give Eugene a chance for a comeback.

Emeralds Notes: Cubs 2014 4th round pick Carson Sands gets the start on Wednesday night against Boise.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs, Diamondbacks
Cubs (1-2) won their first game of the season beating the Diamondbacks (2-2).

Hitting Recap: 3B Wladimir Galindo (.083) knocked in three runs with a double and a sac fly while SS Andrew Monasterio (.167) tripled, walked twice and knocked in three. CF Roberto Caro (.300) went 1-for-3 with a RBI, scored twice, and stole a base. 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.308), LF Jose Paniagua (.286) and DH Miguel Rico (.500) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Camargo made his Cubs debut and won his first pro game in the states. Pitching in the Mexican League last year, the 20-year-old right-hander held the D-Backs to one run on three hits over five innings and fanned three..... Jesus Castillo allowed three runs in 1.2 innings and Marcelo Carreno finally made his Cubs debut, getting the final out of the 7th. Carreno was acquired from the Tigers for Jeff Baker in August 2012 and has been injured.....Trey Masek worked a 1-2-3 8th and Ariel Ovando, made his pro debut on the mound, starting his career as an outfielder in the Astros organization. The 6-foot-4 left hander retired all three hitters he faced, two on strikes.

Dominican Summer League—Red Sox II 6, Cubs 3
Cubs (12-9) scored three times in the first but were blanked by Red Sox (15-5) for the next eight.

Hitting Recap: Cubs only had five hits as 2B Franklin Tineo (.237) went 1-for-4 with two RBI. 1B Chris Pieters (.207) doubled while LF Yovanny Cuevas (.192) and 3B Rafael Mejia (.309) were 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Andri Rondon got the start and allowed five runs in four innings on six hits and a walk. He fanned six and two of the runs were unearned. Fauris Guerrero tossed two shutout frames and Eury Ramos allowed a run over the final three innings.

Venezuelan Summer League—Phillies 3, Cubs 1
Only four hits for the Cubs (17-15) on Tuesday as the Phillies (13-19) handed the VSL bunch a loss.

Hitting Recap: Four singles and three walks was all the Phillies pitching allowed as the Cubs went 0-for-6 with RISP and left six on-base. RF Luis Ayala (.276), CF Jose Gonzalez (.229), 1B Roberto Vahlis (.260) and DH Fidel Matos (.253) all singled. Cubs scored their run in the 9th on a throwing error.

Pitching Chart: Riger Fernandez (0-3, 5.95 ERA) is still looking for his first professional win as the 17-year-old took the loss, allowing two runs over four innings on five hits and walk. Bryan Molina (8.66 ERA) gave up a run in two frames and Harrinson Bermudez (3.75 ERA) fanned three in three scoreless innings.
