Cubs June 26 Minors Recap

Strong pitching performances from South Bend’s Trevor Clifton (pictured) and Eugene’s Oscar De La Cruz propelled their teams to victories on Friday night.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans 5, Iowa 0
Three New Orleans (34-38) pitchers blanked Iowa (38-35) on two hits.

Hitting Recap: Cubs had two hits, a single from Arismendy Alcantara and a double from Junior Lake. Mike Olt was 0-for-4 and C Kyle Schwarber was 0-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Frank Batista lost his AAA season debut, giving up four runs, only one unearned, on eight hits. He threw 78 pitches and fanned two. Joseph Ortiz allowed a run over three innings and Jeffry Antigua kept the Zephyrs off the board the final two innings, retiring all six hitters he faced.

I-Cubs Notes: Drake Britton (3-4, 6.52) is the scheduled starter for Saturday’s tilt with the Zephyrs.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Mobile 3
Tennessee broke open a tie game with three runs in the 8th and three more in the 9th to beat Mobile.

Hitting Recap: 2B Stephen Bruno (.288) led the 13-hit attack with a two hits, three RBI and a walk. CF Jacob Hannemann (.217), RF Albert Almora (.245) and 3B Taylor Davis (.316) all had two hits and plated a run. C Willson Contreras (.327) delivered the go-ahed RBI and Anthony Giansanti (.234) delivered a RBI double as a pinch-hitter.

Pitching Chart: Ivan Pineyro (3.26 ERA) tossed five innings, throwing 87 pitches in the outing. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits and two walks and fanned five. Michael Jensen (2-2, 1.46 ERA) got the win in relief, surrendering a run over two innings. Starling Peralta (3.00 ERA) tossed the final two frames for his second save.

Carolina League—High A—Carolina 9, Myrtle Beach 2
Carolina (2-0, 36-35) scored seven runs in the second to beat Myrtle Beach (0-2, 41-30) for the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: C Victor Caratini (.237) slugged his second homer, a solo shot in the 4th. CF Trey Martin (.234) had two hits while 1B Chesny Young (.356) singled and scored.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood gave up a two-run homer in the first and after a two-run single made it 4-0, he left with an apparent leg injury. The trainer and manager Mark Johnson came out to the mound and Underwood left with a 1-2 count on the hitter. Carolina broadcaster Greg Young, who was with the Tennessee Smokies last year, said Underwood’s velocity was still good but didn’t have good command and pointed to his leg when approached by the trainer. Tyler Ihrig needed one pitch to record the strikeout but two wild pitches plated a run. Ihrig walked the next three hitters for a 6-0 lead. Two singles made in 9-0 before a double play ended the seven-run second. Ihrig blanked the Mudcats for the next four innings and Josh Conway held them scoreless for two more.

South Bend won its second straight to open the second half behind a solid outing from Trevor Clifton.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored four times in the top of the first as CF Charcer Burks (.274) led off with a double and scored on SS Gleyber Torres’ RBI single. Kevin Encarnacion plated Torres (.313) on a groundout and Erick Castillo (.143) capped off the inning with a two-run single. Burks added a RBI single in the 8th and finished 2-for-4 with a walk. 3B Jason Vosler (.267) and LF Rashad Crawford (.289) had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (3-6, 4.33 ERA) blanked the Captains for six innings, earning his third win of the season. The right-hander fanned four and allowed four hits and a walk. Daniel Lewis gave up a run in the seventh on two walks and a hit. Ryan McNeil worked a scoreless 8th but got into trouble in the ninth, yielding a run. David Garner retired the final hitter on strikes for his first save

SB-Cubs News: 2014 second-round pic Jake Stinnett makes his 12th start on Saturday night in Lake County. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has a WHIP of 1.74, the highest of any arm on the staff as he’s walked 32 in 49.1 innings.

Eugene (4-5) won its third straight, taking the series opener from Tri City (5-4).

Hitting Recap: C Tyler Alamo (.300) singled twice and knocked in three runs to pace the offense. DH Matt Rose made his pro debut, singled twice, scored once and knocked in a run. Ian Happ (.300) went 2-for-3 and scored twice while LF Eloy Jimenez (.237) doubled in a run.

Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz(1-1, 1.80 ERA) blanked the Dust Devils for six innings, surrendering four hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned four and had a game score of 67. Dillon Maples (7.20 ERA) fanned three over two innings but gave up a run. Pedro Araujo (5.68 ERA) fanned two in a scoreless ninth.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs had the night off and return to action on Saturday against the Giants. 2015 Draft pick Alex Bautista has been added to the Cubs roster and you can expect more draft picks that just signed to be added in the coming days. Follow NorthSidersReport for stories on all their debuts including this one on Sutton Whiting. .......The Cubs have released five players from the AZL roster: 1B Roney Alcala, C Miguel Rico, 2B Danny Gutierrez, OF Calvin Graves and OF Jenner Emeterio. Graves was the Cubs 27th round pick last June out of Franklin Pierce while Gutierrez received a large signing bonus but it was learned after he singed that he had lied about this age and was 21, not 17. Alcala hit .353 in the VSL in 2013 in 64 games and played last season in Mesa batting .242 with 2 HR in 38 games. Rico spent three years in Latin America and made his stateside debut for Mesa earlier this week with back-to-back multi-hit games. Emeterio swiped 37 bases in the DSL in ’13 and made his stateside debut, going 1-for-3 on June 23.

Dominican Summer League—Rangers II 5, Cubs 2
Rangers scored three times in the top of the ninth to hand the Cubs their seventh straight loss.

Hitting Recap: SS Yeiler Peguero (.349) had two hits, walked once and stole his ninth base. LF Luis Iberia (.118) delivered a RBI single and 1B Chris Pieters (.176) plated a run. Cubs were 1-for-10 with RISP and stranded 10.

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (2.05 ERA) was charged with two runs over six innings, allowing three hits and two walks. Pablo Ochoa (1-4, 3.93 ERA) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on two hits and three walks over the final three frames. Only one of the Rangers runs was earned as Cubs committed five errors..

Cubs Notes: 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Sucre Valdez had been added to the roster.

Venezuelan Summer League—Rays 8, Cubs 3
Cubs (17-18) dropped their fourth straight falling to the first-place Rays (22-13).

Hitting Recap: All nine starters had hits but the Cubs could only push three runs across as all the hits were singles. RF Jose Gonzalez (.238) went 2-for-4 with a RBI while 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.273) and SS Rafael Narea (.203) plated runs.

Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (2-2, 4.57) only lasted two innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits. Mauro Vides fanned two in four scoreless innings while Harrinson Bermudez gave up three runs over the final three innings.
