Cubs June 27 Minors Recap

Kyle Schwarber slugged his first AAA homer as the catcher went 3-for-4 in Iowa’s win and Eugene won its fourth straight behind a three-hit night from Eloy Jimenez. South Bend made it five straight wins and Myrtle Beach got swept for the first time this year.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, New Orleans 1
Kyle Schwarber slugged his first AAA homer and Drake Britton tossed six shutout innings to lead Iowa (39-35) over New Orleans (34-39).

Hitting Recap: Kyle Schwarber had his best AAA game at the plate, collecting three hits including a mammoth solo homer to straight way centerfield. He also scored twice. Junior Lake went 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI while Jonathan Mota had two hits and knocked ina pair.

Pitching Chart: Drake Britton turned in his best outing of the season, blanking the Zephyrs for six innings in his 69-pitch outing. The left-hander allowed four hits, fanned four, and had a game score of 68..... Carl Edwards Jr. went two innings, allowing a run on a hit and a walk......Blake Cooper tossed a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs haven’t announced a starter for Sunday’s game.....RHP Donn Roach was promoted to Chicago and Yoervis Medina was sent back to Iowa. To make room for Roach on the 40-man roster, Iowa C Rafael Lopez was designated for assignment.

Carolina League—High A—Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach 3
Carolina used 10 hits and a two-hour rain delay to sweep Myrtle Beach.

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.266) went 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI while C Victor Caratini (.244) collected a pair of hits and knocked in a run. 2B Daniel Lockhart (.217) singled in a run.

Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng got the start and went five innings before the rain delay ended his night. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits and walk. Tseng fanned two, threw 82 pitches, and had a game score of 44. Michael Heesch allowed a run in two innings of relief and Jasvir Rakkar worked a scoreless inning.

South Bend won their fifth straight as right-hander Jake Stinnett set a career mark for innings pitched

Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.314) continues to square up baseballs as the 18-year-old went 2-for-5 and knocked in a run. 3B Jason Vosler (.268) swatted his second homer, a solo blast in the 2nd. CF Charcer Burks (.278) had two hits and knocked in a run while LF Rashad Crawford (.288) went 1-for-4 with a RBI triple and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (3-2, 5.30 ERA) threw a career-high 6.2 innings and earned his third win. Last year’s second-round pick allowed four runs (three coming on a homer) on seven hits and walked one. He got 11 ground ball outs, recorded four strikeouts and had a game score of 47. Brad Markey (2.25 ERA) stranded an inherited runner in the 7th and then blanked the Captains for two more frames to earn his second save.

SB-Cubs News: All-Star MVP Jeremy Null (6-2, 2.33 ERA) was scheduled to make his 13th start on Sunday at Lake County but has been promoted to Myrtle Beach.

Eugene (5-5) made it four straight with a win over Tri-City (5-5).

Hitting Recap: LF Eloy Jimenez (.293) went 3-for-3 and knocked in a run to lead the offense. RF Donnie Dewees made his professional debut and hit leadoff, going 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. First-round pick Ian Happ (.273) didn’t get a hit but he did knock in a run, scored once, and stole his third base. 2B Frandy Delarosa (.250) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and also stole two bases.1B Matt Rose (.375), C Tyler Alamo (.304), 3B Blake Headley (.182), and SS Vimeal Machin (.100) all knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (5.06 ERA) fanned six over five innings but gave up three runs on six hits and two walks. Paulino had a game score of 47 and was in line for the win when he departed.....Alex Santana (12.46 ERA) got charged with a blown save as an unearned run in the 7th tied the game.....Jae-Hoon Ha (2-0, 3.60 ERA) must think pitching is easy as the outfielder turned pitcher earned his second win, fanning three in two scoreless frames.

Cubs (4-2) collected 11 hits and made in four in a row with a win over the Giants (3-4).

Hitting Recap: Big night at the plate for 21-year-old Robert Garcia (.267) as the switch-hitting outfielder had three hits, knocked in four runs, and scored twice. Wladimir Galindo (.381) went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a walk while Jose Paniagua (.300) had two hits, scored twice and added a RBI. LF Alex Bautista made his pro debut, going 1-for-5 with a RBI single. CF Robert Caro (.240) knocked in two and 2B Sutton Whiting (.400) scored twice and swiped his second base.

Pitching Chart: Austyn Willis (.2.16 ERA) made his second start, lasting 3.1 frames with a pair of punchouts. The right-hander gave up two runs on six hits and two walks. Tanner Griggs (0.00 ERA) got the final two outs of the fourth. Erling Moreno (1-1, 2.25 ERA), an 18-year-old from Columbia and part of the 2013 international class, collected his first pro win, tossing two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and coaxed five ground ball outs. Trey Masek (7.36 ERA) gave up a run in two innings and Ariel Ovando (4.50 ERA) struckout the side in the 9th but not before yielding a run.

Cubs (13-12) snapped their seven-game losing streak with a win over the Braves (10-15).

Hitting Recap: 1B Chris Pieters (.194) led the offense going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. SS Yeiler Peguero (.352) singled, walked twice, and scored twice. DH Yovanny Cuevas (.203) went 2-for-3 with two runs while 3B Rafael Mejia (.284) and LF Tony Rijo (.224) knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada (1-0, 3.00 ERA) tossed five innings of one-hit ball to earn his first career win. The 18-year-old right-hander walked one, fanned two, got 10 ground ball outs, and had a game score of 66......Wander Cabrera worked three innings, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts.....Luis Aquino threw a scoreless ninth.

CF Jhonny Bethencourt (.284) had two hits, walked twice and scored two runs. Eugenio Palma (3.20 ERA) allowed four runs in two frames while Jose Leidenz (2-0, 1.50) got the win, giving up a run over two innings. Juan Rengifo (1.00 ERA) collected his 7th save, tossing two scoreless innings.
