Cubs June 28 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates from June 28 including the signing of a left-hander from VCU.

Cubs sign VCU lefty, assign him to Eugene
The Cubs signed left-hander Heath Dwyer to a minor league contract on June 19 and have assigned the left-hander to Eugene. A non-drafted free agent, Dwyer went 9-2 with a 2.95 ERA in 16 starts for Virginia Commonwealth, striking out 82 in 85.1 innings his senior season. Dwyer spent four seasons at VCU, sporting a 26-14 record with a 3.33 ERA in 332.2 innings.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, New Orleans 5
Iowa scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to overcome a five-run sixth for the win.

Hitting Recap: Cubs pounded New Orleans pitching for 12 hits as SS Ryan Dent (.269) was 2-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-winner in the 8th. LF Junior Lake (.306) had two hits and plated two runs, including a game-tying double in the 8th. 1B Mike Olt (.286) and RF Rubi Silva (.268) had two hits each. C Kyle Schwarber (273) went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino (5.13 ERA) made his 8th start with the I-Cubs, giving up five runs in the sixth. He worked 5.2 innings, surrendering seven hits and a walk with one strikeout. Gonzalez Germen (5-1, 3.90 ERA) earned the win, working around four hits in 2.1 shutout innings. Brian Schlitter (0.90 ERA) got his sixth save, despite allowing two hits and he fanned the final hitter.

I-Cubs Notes: Jeffry Antigua (0-1, 5.06 ERA) gets the start on Monday night at Principal Park as the I-Cubs host New Orleans.

Southern League—AA—Game 1—Tennessee 5, Mobile 4; Game 2— Mobile 7, Tennessee 3
Mobile won the night-cap to snap Tennessee’s seven-game winning streak.

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Smokies took advantage of eight walks, including two that forced in a pair of runs in the fourth to provide the winning margin. Stephen Bruno and Willson Contreras both had two hits and plated a run. Albert Almora and Daniel Vogelbach both doubled and also walked with the bases loaded.........GAME 2—Only five hits for Tennessee in the second game, two left the yard. Taylor Davis hit a solo shot in the fourth, his third, and Vogelbach smacked a two-run shot in the sixth, his fifth.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Rob Zastryzny had an ERA of over 9.00 in the first inning last year at Daytona. Those woes continued to follow the left-hander, allowing a three run homer in the first against Mobile. He settled down and blanked the Bears over the next three frames, ending his first appearance in AA since April 30 with a line of 4 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB 4K, 46 game score. Zach Cates got the win in his first game back in Tennessee, tossing a pair of shutout innings. P.J. Francescon earned his 10th save with a scoreless seventh.........GAME 2—Felix Pena (5-3, 3.63 ERA) got tagged for seven runs the first two innings on six hits and two walks. He threw 77 pitches in the three-inning outing.....Andres Santiago tossed two scoreless frames and Gerardo Concepcion worked a scoreless sixth.

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 2
Winston-Salem scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to take the series opener against Myrtle Beach and hand the Pelicans their fourth straight loss of the second half.

Hitting Recap: Groundouts by Trey Martin and Daniel Lockhart plated both of the Pelicans runs. Chesny Young and Lockhart had two hits each but the Pelicans were 0-for-11 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez tossed a gem with a season-high seven innings, allowing a run on five hits. The right-hander fanned five, didn’t walk anyone and had a game score of 68.....Right-hander James Farris made his High A debut after an all-star first half in South Bend. The University of Arizona product found himself in a jam after a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a walk. Another single tied and game and the second wild pitch of the inning gave the Dash the lead....Juan Paniagua got the final out of the 8th.

Pelicans News: The Pelicans placed three players on the DL. RHP Duane Underwood, who left Saturday’s start, was placed on the 7-day disabled list, along with RHP Tyler Skulina and OF Shawon Dunston, who was recently on the DL with shoulder injury, came back, played in two games, and is now back on DL. Cubs organization has used the DL to keep pitchers fresh in the lower levels so that may explain Skulina but Underwood’s leg injury and Dunston’s shoulder are more of a concern.

Midwest League—Low A—Lake County 6, South Bend 3
Lake County scored four times in the bottom of the 8th to snap South Bend’s five-game win streak.

Hitting Recap: Cubs got a run in the first when Charcer Burks walked, took third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a RBI single from Gleyber Torres. The 18-year-old shortstop swatted his second homer down the right field line for a 2-0 lead in the third. David Bote doubled to lead off the fifth and scored when the second baseman misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Erick Castillo, who went 2-for-4. Kevin Encarnacion added two singles.

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner got the spot start, replacing Jeremy Null, who was promoted to Myrtle Beach. The right-hander from San Diego University went three innings, allowing a run on three hits and four walks. He fanned four.....Sam Wilson, who just joined the Cubs from Eugene, tossed a pair of scoreless frames as the left-hander fanned two in his MWL debut. Daniel Lewis worked two innings, giving up a run in the sixth on two hits. Jordan Minch got charged with his first blown save and also took the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk in the 8th.

SB-Cubs News: Erick Leal (6-4, 4.96 ERA) gets the start for South Bend as they return home and host Lansing, the first-half champs......South Bend has lost both of their aces. All-Star MVP Jeremy Null was promoted to Myrtle Beach, following Ryan Williams out of town, who was promoted to AA Tennessee. Right-handed reliever David Garner was also promoted to Myrtle Beach. Replacing the two arms on the roster from Eugene are relievers Sam Wilson, a left hander, and RH Corbin Hoffner.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Tri-City 8, Eugene 2
Tri-City scored six times in the 8th with two outs to beat Eugene and end their four-game win streak.

Hitting Recap: Emeralds only had six hits and were 0-for-6 with RISP. Ian Happ gave Eugene a 1-0 lead in the 4th with his third homer, a solo shot. Happ was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored both runs. LF Donnie Dewees (.125) collected his first pro hit, a single in the 6th. C Ian Rice (.333) made his pro debut, playing catcher and hitting 4th. He singled and walked in four plate appearances. RF Eloy Jimenez (.289) went 1-for-4 but fanned three times.

Pitching Chart: Andin Diaz (1.86 ERA) worked into the sixth inning in one of his best starts as a pro. The 22-year-old lefty blanked the Dust Devils for 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks. Diaz fanned four, got 10 ground ball outs and had a game score of 67.....Francisco Carrillo (0-1, 9.00 ERA) took the loss, allowing two runners to reach after getting the first two outs of the 8th.......John Williamson made his pro debut and it was a tough lesson. He allowed both inherited runners to score and was charged with three runs as all three hitters he faced reached base. Pedro Araujo (7.04 ERA) allowed a bases clearing double in the 8th and another run in the 9th.

Emeralds Notes: Adbert Alzolay (0-1, 1.00 ERA) gets the start in an afternoon tile at PK Park against Tri-City on Monday.

Arizona Rookie League—Giants 11, Cubs, 6
Giants (4-4) used a six-run third to beat the Cubs (4-3).

Hitting Recap: CF Robert Garcia (.333) had another big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. SS Carlos Sepulveda (.296) collected two singles and drove in two. C Jhonny Pereda (.214) double, walked and scored twice while 2B Sutton Whiting (.333) and RF Alex Bautista (.222) both doubled.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease, the Cubs sixth-round pick last year who signed for a $1.5 million bonus, made his first pro start and second appearance, tossing two perfect innings with a pair of punchouts. Carlos Rodriguez got charged with 10 runs in 3.2 innings, surrendering nine hits (two homers) and a walk. Santiago Rodriguez tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and Scott Frazier gave up a run in the 9th.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs
Cubs(13-12) have Sundays off are currently in 4th place in 10-team San Pedro Macoris Division. Yeiler Peguero leads the Cubs with a .352 average, Rafael Mejia has four homers and is tied with Franklin Tineo for the team lead with 15 RBI. 20-year-old Junior Marte has a team-high five starts and is 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA with 21 K in 22 IP.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs
Cubs (18-18) have Sundays off and trail the first-place Rays (22-14) by four games. Jhonny Bethencourt is second in the VSL in runs scored (23) while Jose Rojas (27) and Jose Gonzalez (24) are 1-2 in RBI. Gonzalez also tops league in stolen bases with 11 and Luis Ayala is second with 10. Juan Rengifo leads the league in wins (4) and saves (7).
