Cubs June 29 Minors Recap

Jorge Soler started his rehab in Iowa on Monday, driving in the I-Cubs only run in a 2-1 loss. Justin Marra’s walk-off single gave Eugene a win while Ryan Williams continues to impress on the mound in Tennessee.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans (Marlins) 2, Iowa 1—12 innings
New Orleans pushed across a run in the 12th on a sacrifice fly to beat Iowa Monday afternoon.

Hitting Recap: Jorge Soler played right field for his first rehab start after going on the DL for Chicago. The Cubs outfielder went 0-for-3 and drove in the only run for Iowa with a RBI groundout. C Taylor Teagarden (.279) had two hits while 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.256) went 1-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Jeffry Antigua tossed five innings for Iowa before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the fifth. He only allowed a solo homer, one of three hits, and walked three. He recorded one strikeout and threw 62 pitches, 37 for strikes......Joseph Ortiz made his 25th appearance and it was his best, tossing four no-hit innings with a strikeout. Blake Cooper went three innings and took the loss, getting charged with the unearned run in the 12th after a throwing error by catcher Kyle Schwarber.

I-Cubs Notes: Dallas Beeler (1-5, 6.79 ERA) gets the start against Round Rock on Tuesday night at Principal Park.........Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler started his rehab in Iowa and told Des Monies register reporter Tommy Birch his ankle felt fine and he thought he needed four or five games to get get ready but that it wasn’t his call.

Southern League—AA—Mobile (Diamondbacks) 3, Tennessee 2
A two-run homer in the 7th proved to be the difference as Mobile downed Tennessee.

Hitting Recap: RF Billy McKinney (.310) collected another multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Taylor Davis (.333) singled in a run and 2B Stephen Bruno (.290) added a sacrifice fly. C Willson Contrera (.330) singled and scored while CF Albert Almora (.246) and Daniel Vogelbach (.285) both singled.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams continues to impress in AA as the right-hander held the BayBears to a run over six innings. Last year’s 10th round pick gave up six hits, walked one and fanned four. Williams threw 68 pitches and had a game score of 59......Corey Black suffered his first loss as a reliever, surrendering a two-run homer that hit the foul pole in the 7th. He fanned four in two innings.

Smokies News: OF Albert Almora and 1B Daniel Vogelbach have been selected to play for Team USA in the 2015 Pan American Games July 10-19 in Ontario, Canada. Two former Cubs, RHP Casey Coleman and OF Brian Bogusevic, were also named to the roster......Smokies have Tuesday off and return home on Wednesday to face Montgomery.

Carolina League—High A— Winston-Salem (White Sox) 2, Myrtle Beach 1
Winston-Salem scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to hand Myrtle Beach their fifth straight loss to start the second half.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans were held to six hits and their only run scored in the fifth on a RBI double by Chesny Young that plated Daniel Lockhart, who led off the frame with a single. Jeimer Candelario ripped his 19th double down the right field line for the only other extra base hit.

Pitching Chart: Daury Torrez held the Dash to just one run over six innings, allowing seven hits. The right-hander fanned six, got eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 60. James Pugliese (3-1, 1.73) lost for the first time since the 2013 season, allowing the winning run in the 8th as the Dash collected back-to-back singles with two outs.

Pelicans News: Jeremy Null will make his High A debut on Tuesday night at Winton-Salem.......For the third time in less than a week, Myrtle Beach has received a MWL All-Star as C Cael Brockmeyer been promoted to High A. Brockmeyer went 1-for-3 with a walk in his debut.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Lansing (Blue Jays) 2
Gioskar Amaya had three hits and scored the go-ahed run to help lead South Bend over Lansing.

Hitting Recap: Charcer Burks slugged his first homer of the season and the second of his career with a solo blast in the second. Gioskar Amaya and Yasiel Balaguert had three hits each. Amaya scored the go-ahead run from third in the 7th on an errant pickoff throw that also scored Rashad Crawford from second. Balaguert capped off the frame with a RBI single. Jason Vosler went 2-for-4 and Gleyber Torres was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Tommy Thorpe made his second career start and went five innings, surrendering a run on four hits and a walk. He fanned three and gave up a solo homer.....Corbin Hoffner returned to the Midwest League with his new sidearm delivery and got the win, blanking the Lugnuts for three innings. He fanned four and yielded two hits.....Dillon Maples made his South Bend debut in the 9th, allowing a run on two hits but still got credit for the save.

SB-Cubs News: C Gioskar Amaya was activated from the disabled list and C Cael Brockmeyer was promoted to Myrtle Beach......Erick Leal was scheduled to start on Monday night but started his suspension for a bench-clearing brawl against Dayton.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 5, Tri-City 4
Justin Marra ripped a pinch-hit walk-off single with the bases loaded to give Eugene (6-6) the win over Tri-City (6-6).

Hitting Recap: DH Donnie Dewees (.231) led off the 9th with a double, and after walks to LF Eloy Jimenez (.271) and Ian Happ (.282), Marra delivered the game winner. Dewees finished 2-for-5. Matt Rose (.462) continues to square up baseballs as the first baseman went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. 3B Adonis Paula (.297) had two hits and plated a pair.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay, on an innings limit, fanned four in two shutout frames in his second start. Ryan Kellogg made his pro debut on Monday afternoon working a 1-2-3 third with two punchouts. Greyfer Eregua allowed two runs over 3.2 frames with six hits and four strikeouts. Jared Cheek also made his pro debut, surrendering a run on two hits and two walks. Alex Santana gave up the tying run in the ninth for his third blown save but got credit for the win.

Emeralds Notes: Carson Sands (0-1, 4.09 ERA) takes the mound for his third start in the series finale against Tri-City on Tuesday night.

Mariners (6-2) pitching held the Cubs (4-4) to just a run on five hits.

Hitting Recap: Cubs 22nd round pick Alex Bautista led the offense with a pair of single, one driving in Wladimir Galindo, who doubled. RF Robert Garcia (.333) and 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.290) both singled.

Pitching Chart: James Norwood, who started the year in South Bend, got the start, surrendering two runs in his only inning. Jesus Camargo (1.80 ERA) fanned five over five innings,surrendering a run on three hits and two walks. Jesus Castillo threw two scoreless frames.

Three Cubs (14-12) pitchers held the Braves (10-16) to three hits.

Hitting Recap: Yovanny Cuevas led the offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Tony Rijo went 1-for-4 with a RBI. Edgar Rondon singled, walked and swiped three bases as the Cubs ended the game with 7 SB.

Pitching Chart: Sucre Valdez made his pro debut, allowing an unearned run on a hit over three innings. Andri Rondon got the win, blanking the Braves over five innings on two hits with three strikeouts. Aneuris Rosario worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 2, Cubs 1—10 innings
Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the 10th to beat the Cubs and give Juan Rengifo his first loss.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored their only run when Francisco Garay crossed home after an errant pick off throw. C Daniel Diaz doubled, the Cubs only extra base hit as they were 0-for-7 with RISP, stranded nine, and three runners caught stealing.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Arias got the start and allowed a run over four innings on five hits and a walk. Moises Ramirez fanned four in three no-hit innings and Bryan Molina blanked the Tigers for 1.2 innings. Rengifo got the final out of the 9th after a two-out triple but gave up the winnings run in extras.
