Cubs June 30 Minors Recap

Cubs second-round pick Donnie Dewees had three doubles and knocked in four to lead Eugene to a win over Tri-City while Jeimer Candelario matched his career-high with four hits, helping Myrtle Beach snap its five-game skid. Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock 6, Iowa 4
Round Rock (46-31) rallied late to take the opening game of the series from Iowa (40-37).

Hitting Recap: Cubs had six hits as C Kyle Schwarber (.250) doubled in a run while DH Christian Villanueva (.269) added RBI double. RF Jorge Soler went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and 3B Mike Olt was hitless in four trips and committed two errors.

Pitching Chart: Dallas Beeler gave up four runs over 6.2 frames but only two of the runs were earned as Iowa made three miscues in the field. The right-hander threw 95 pitches, 61 for strikes, fanned three, and had a game score of 54....Yoervis Medina (1-1, 4.34 ERA) took the loss in his first game since being optioned from Chicago. He allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings......Brian Schlitter worked a 1-2-3 ninth to lower his ERA to 0.86.

Smokies had the day off as they recover from their 8-hour bus ride back from Mobile. Tennessee is back in action on Wednesday night when they host Montgomery and Pierce Johnson (1-0, 0.77 ERA) mades his fourth start since returning from DL to start the season. In his last start, Johnson threw 83 pitches, 41 for strikes, allowing a run on two hits. He walked three and hit two.



Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Winston-Salem 4
Myrtle Beach overcame a 4-0 deficit and snapped their five-game losing streak.

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.277) collected a career-high four hits and knocked in a pair to lead the comeback. 1B Victor Caratini (.242) delivered a two-run double in the Pelicans four-run 6th while RF Mark Zagunis (.312) went 1-for 3 with a double and scored three times. LF Kevin Brown (.236) and DH Daniel Lockhart (.227) had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null made his High A debut and allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings. He gave up two homers, fanned four, and had a game score of 41. Josh Conway (1-1, 3.94 ERA) earned his first pro win, tossing a pair of no-hit innings with a walk and a strikeout. Michael Heesch (1.80 ERA) picked up his second save with two perfect frames, fanning three.

Pelicans News: RHP Duane Underwood, who left his last start in the second inning and placed on the DL, has traveled to Chicago for a MRI on his elbow.......Pelicans return home on Wednesday and send Fernando Cruz (1-1, 1.86 ERA) to the mound.

Midwest League—Low A—Lansing 5, South Bend 4
Lansing (3-3) hung on to beat South Bend (4-2) and even the series.

Hitting Recap: South Bend out-hit the Lugnuts 14-8 and scored three times in the bottom of the 8th but it wasn’t enough. 3B Jesse Hodges (.251) led the offense with three hits and added two-run double in the 8th. LF Charcer Burks (.279) was 3-for-5 while RF Kevin Encarnacion (.275) and SS Gleyber Torres (.320) both collected two hits.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (3-5) worked six innings but got tagged for four runs on five hits, including a solo homer. He walked two and had a game score of 45......Ryan McNeil (3.41 ERA) pitched the final three frames, allowing a run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

SB-Cubs News: Brad Markey (0-0, 2.25 ERA) makes his first pro start Wednesday night against Lansing after 26 career relief appearances.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 9, Tri-City 4
Donnie Dewees ripped three doubles and knocked in four as Eugene (7-6) beat Tri-City (6-7) for the fourth time in five games.

Hitting Recap: Second-round pick Donnie Dewees introduced himself to minor league baseball on Tuesday night as the left-handed hitting outfielder delivered three doubles and had 4 RBI in the win. Dewees, who started his pro career 1-for-8, is now hitting .333/.400/.556......18-year-old LF Eloy Jimenez (.288) went 2-for-4 and smacked his first NWL homer, a solo blast in the 1st.....2B Frandy Delarosa (.256) and SS Ho-young Son (.250) both added RBI singles.

Pitching Chart: Carson Sands (1-1, 2.81 ERA) won his first game of season and as the lefty allowed an unearned run over five innings. He surrendered three hits, fanned four and had a game score of 63......LH Heath Dwyer, a non-drafted free agent from Virginia Commonwealth, made his pro debut and gave up two runs on two hits and walk in the sixth.....Jae-Hoon Ha (4.05 ERA) picked up his first hold despite allowing a run in 1.2 frames......David Berg made his pro debut and one of the top relievers in NCCAA history was impressive, retiring all four hitters he faced, two on strikes, for his first pro save.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 9, Mariners 8
Jose Paniagua’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs (5-4) the win over the Mariners (6-3) at Sloan Park.

Hitting Recap: 1B Jose Paniagua (.258) was the hero on Tuesday night with a game-wining homer in the bottom of the ninth, his only hit in three trips. RF Robert Garcia (.346), who started season 1-for-10, had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice. SS Andruw Monasterio (.200) was 2-for-4 with two RBI while 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.265) knocked in two. Cubs only had six hits as they took advantage of five M’s errors.

Pitching Chart: Enrique De Los Rio (6.48 RA) got the start and allowed four runs on nine hits over four innings. He fanned two and had a game score of 30. Michael Knighton (10.38 ERA) gave up four runs over two innings and Ariel Ovando (2.25 ERA) fanned three in two shutout frames. Mark Malave (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned his first professional win after tossing a scoreless 9th.

Dominican Summer League—Tigers 11, Cubs 2
Tigers (15-12) pounded Cubs (14-13) pitching for 14 hits and took advantage of four errors.

Hitting Recap: Cubs had seven hits, three off the bat of CF Chris Pieters (.231), who also walked twice. 2B Edgar Rondon (.292) went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored while LF Yovanny Cuevas (.219) drove in both runs.

Pitching Chart: Tough day on the mound for Cubs pitching. Deibi Torres (1-3, 6.57 ERA) got the start and allowed six runs in three innings on eight hits and a walk. Miguel Esteves (7.59 ERA) gave up three runs in two innings and Eury Ramos (6.17 ERA) tossed the final three frames, yielding two runs.

Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 9, Cubs 8
After the Cubs (18-20) tied the game in the 9th the Tigers (18-20) won it in the 11th.

Hitting Recap: 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.294) led the offense with two singles, two walks, and two runs scored. RF Jose Rojas (.279) had two hits and knocked in a run while C Roberto Vahlis (.256) singled and knocked in two. 1B Fidel Matos (.245) went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: For the second straight day, Juan Rengifo (4-2, 1.20 ERA) took the loss, allowing the winning run in the 11th, his second inning. Riger Fernandez (.5.87 ERA) surrendered two runs over 3.1 innings in his 7th start. Eugenio Palma (2.89 ERA) tossed two scoreless frames, Jose Leidenz (2.25 ERA) gave up four runs in two innings and Bryan Molina (6.56 ERA) kept the Tigers off the board in the ninth.
