Cubs July 1 Minors Recap

Eloy Jimenez slugged his second homer in as many days and Justin Steele tossed six solid innings as Eugene knocked off HIllsboro in their MiLB-TV debut. Iowa and Myrtle Beach won one-run games in a busy night of action around the Cubs affiliates.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Round Rock 3
Christian Villanueva’s groundout in the bottom of the 8th scored pinch-runner Rubi Silva to give Iowa (41-37) the win over Round Rock (46-32).

Hitting Recap: C Kyle Schwarber (.313) doubled, added two singles and a RBI in four trips. RF Junior Lake (.303) had two hits while DH Chris Valaika (.251) added a sacrifice fly. LF Arismendy Alcantara (.252) went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Pimentel fanned nine over six innings but didn’t figure in the decision. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk, and finished with game score of 68.......Carl Edwards Jr. (1-0, 3.60 ERA) was charged with his first blown save but earned his first AAA win, allowing a run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Brain Schlitter worked a scoreless ninth for his 7th save.

I-Cubs Notes: Drake Britton (4-4, 5.40 ERA) gets the start Thursday night at Principal Park against Round Rock.....OF Jorge Soler, in Iowa for a rehab stint, had a planned day off.....I-Cubs have placed OF Adron Chambers on the DL with a hip injury.

Southern League—AA—Montgomery @ Tennessee—Rained Out
The two teams were rained out and will play a twin-ball on Thursday. Pierce Johnson (1-0, 0.7 ERA) and Andres Santiago (1-3, 4.42) are the scheduled starters for the Smokies.



Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Salem 7
Myrtle Beach (2-5, 43-33) came out on top of a wild tilt with Salem (2-5, 40-37) in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: 1B Jacob Rogers (.252) paced the Pelicans offensive attack with two hits and two RBI while SS Chesny Young (.343) had two hits, knocked in a pair, and was thrown out on a controversial play at the plate that led to the ejection of Myrtle Beach manager Mark Johnson and first base coach Chris Gutierrez. CF Mark Zagunis (.316) had two hits, scored twice and added a RBI. 2B Daniel Lockhart (.227) extended his hit streak to nine games.

Pitching Chart: Fernando Cruz got the start and only lasted three innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks.....David Garner made his High A debut a good one, collecting the win and tossing three innings. The right-hander surrendered an unearned run on four hits and a walk with two punchouts......Juan Paniagua pitched two frames, yielding a run, and Jasvir Rakkar recored his 10th save despite giving up three hits and a run in the 9th.

Pelicans News: Reports out of Chicago are that Duane Underwood’s MRI on is elbow came back clean and he’s expected to pitch again this season......Tyler Ihrig makes his first start on Thursday night against Salem.......Relief pitcher Jasvir Rakkar has been named to play for Canada in the Pan-American games in Ontario...... Midwest League—Low A—Lansing 3, South Bend 2—10 innings
A solo homer in the 10th lifted Lansing (4-3, 46-31) over South Bend (4-3, 33-41).

Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres had another solid game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored ans stole two bases (12). 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.284) got credit for South Bend’s only RBI while CF Charcer Burks (.281) and DH Gioskar Amaya (.256) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey made his first pro start and lasted five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits and a walk. He fanned three and had a game score of 51.....Jordan Minch blanked the Lugnuts for three frames, yielding two hits and two walks while recording one punchout.....In his second outing for South Bend, Sam Wilson worked a scoreless ninth but allowed a solo homer in the 10th that proved to the difference. He fanned four.

SB-Cubs News: Erick Leal (6-4, 4.96 ERA) is done with his suspension and takes the mound Thursday night at Four Winds Field in the opening game of the series against Bowling Green.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Hillsboro 2
The arm of Justin Steele and the bat of Eloy Jimenez propelled Eugene (8-6) past Hillsboro (7-7) in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: LF Eloy Jimenez (.321) had three hits, including his second homer in as many days, and scored twice to pace the offense. Tyler Alamo delivered two singles and plated a run while 1B Matt Rose (.333), 2B Frandy Delarosa (.255), SS Ho-young Son (.256), and 3B Adonis Paula (.293) all drove in runs.

Pitching Chart: Justin Steele improved to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.06 with six punchouts over six innings, getting several punchouts with his sharp breaking curve ball. The lefty allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks. He finished with a game score of 62....Francisco Carrillo earned his first save, blanking the Hops the final three innings with three strikeouts.

Emeralds Notes: Oscar De La Cruz (1-1, 1.80 ERA) gets the ball on Thursday night in Hillsboro in a game on MiLB-TV.

Cubs had the day off and host the A’s on Thursday night.



Dominican Summer League—Cubs 5, Tigers 2
Cubs (15-13) used a four-run 8th to down the Tigers (15-13).

Hitting Recap: 3B Fidel Mejia’s two-run single in the 8th provided the insurance for the victory. CF Yovanny Cuevas (.234) went 2-for-4 and LF Tony Rijo (.234) had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Junior Marte (1.61 ERA) fanned eight over six shutout innings as the 20-year-ld held the Tigers to just four hits and had a game score of 72. Jose Morel (5.45 ERA) gave up the lead in the 7th, allowing a run, while Luis Aquino (2-0, 0.00 ERA) picked up the win, despite giving up an unearned run in the 9th.

Venezuelan Summer League—Rays 13, Cubs 8
Rays (25-14) outslugged the Cubs (18-21), who have dropped three straight and seven of their last eight.

Hitting Recap: Cubs out hit the Rays 14-13 but fell short in the column that counts. CF Jose Gonzalez (.245), 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.307) and 3B Rafael Narea (.213) all had three hits while Gonzalez and DH Fidel Matos (.242) had two RBI apiece.

Pitching Chart: Not a good day on the mound. Freddy Tineo (0-2, 6.65 ERA) allowed four runs in three innings, Mauro Vides (8.56 ERA) only got one out before surrendering six runs, and Harrinson Bermudez (4.26 ERA) gave up three runs over 4.2 frames.
