Cubs July 2 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates from July 2.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 5, Round Rock 4
Iowa (42-37) scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to overcome a 4-0 deficit and beat Round Rock (46-33).

Hitting Recap: SS Jonathan Mota’s RBI single scored 2B Chris Valaika (.251) to give Iowa the win. The Cubs tied the game when 3B Mike Olt (.273) doubled and scored on LF Junior Lake’s single when the outfielder mishandled the base hit. Olt, who’s still rehabbing his broken arm, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI....Mota (.257) added three hits and Taylor Teagarden collected three hits, including a pair of doubles.....RF Jorge Soler (.100) returned to the lineup on Thursday night is his third game in Iowa since going on the DL with an ankle sprain. Soler has said the ankle is fine and is close to returning to Wrigley Field. Soler was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Drake Britton only gave up one earned run but allowed three more over six innings. Britton allowed eight hits, walked one and fanned five in his 81-pitch outing......Armando Rivero saw his first action since returning from a paternity leave, working a pair of scoreless innings. Gonzalez German fanned two in the 9th for his 4th save.

I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (1-4, 5.13 ERA) gets the start on Friday night against Round Rock.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Montgomery 2
Albert Almora and Taylor Davis homered while Pierce Johnson tossed five solid innings to help Tennessee beat Montgomery.

Hitting Recap: C Taylor Davis (.333) slugged his 4th AA homer in the 4th and CF Albert Almora (.246) added a solo blast out of the stadium in the 8th to lead the offense. LF Jacob Hannemann (.221) went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI, and 3B Wes Darvill (.176) tripled, walked and knocked in a run. Daniel Vogelbach went 0-for-1 with two walks and left the game in the 6th after flying out.

Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson was throwing in low 90s and his breaking ball had good movement and got plenty of swing-and-miss. Biscuits had a bunch of good at-bats and made the right-hander work, throwing 93 pitches in his five innings. He gave up one run on six hits, walked two, fanned five, and had a game score of 54.....Tayler Scott tossed 2.2 innings of relief, surrendering a run on three hits to earn his first hold. All-star P.J. Francescon got the final four outs for his 11th save.

Smokies News: The two teams will make up Wednesday’s night game that was rained out with a twin-bill on Friday. The DH was originally scheduled for Thursday night, but changed. The Smokies will send Andres Santiago and Rob Zastryzny to the mound.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach vs. Salem—Suspended
Thursday night’s game was suspended due to lightning in the bottom of the fifth with Salem leading 1-0. The game will completed on Friday and be followed by a seven-inning game. Jen-Ho Tseng (2-5, 4.66 ERA) is scheduled to start the second game.

Midwest League—Low A—Bowling Green 5, South Bend 0
Bowling Green scored five times in the 5th, four coming on a grand slam, and blanked South Bend.

Hitting Recap: Cubs had eight hits but went 0-for-12 with RISP. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.288), C Gioskar Amaya (.262) and CF Rashad Crawford (.286) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal breezed through the first four innings retiring the first 10 hitters before a one-out walk in the fourth. The fifth inning was a different story, as a leadoff double opened the door and before the frame was over, the Hot Rods scored five times, four coming on a grand slam. Daniel Lewis tossed three innings of shutout ball and Corbin Hoffner threw a scoreless 9th.

SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (3-2, 5.30 ERA) takes the mound on Friday night against Bowling Green.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 2, Hillsboro 1—11 innings
Blake Headley’s RBI single in the 9th tied the game and Ian Happ’s solo homer in the 11th gave Eugene (9-6) the win over Hillsboro (7-8).

Hitting Recap: CF Ian Happ (.271) had a big night at the plate, slugging his 4th homer in the 11th to provide the difference. Happ finished 2-for-3, scored both runs, and walked twice....SS Vimeal Machin went 2-for-2 with two doubles and Ho-Young Son doubled in two at-bats.

Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz (1-1, 1.69 ERA) fanned nine over six innings, allowing a run on four hits. The right-hander finished with a game score of 69.....Pedro Araujo blanked the Hops for two farms and David Berg (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned his first pro win with two perfect innings, including a pair of strikeouts. Jared Cheek got the final three outs for his first pro save.

Emeralds Notes: Jose Paulino (0-0, 5.06 ERA) makes his third start Friday night in Hillsboro.

Arizona Rookie League—A’s 9, Cubs 6
Cubs (5-5) scored six times in the third but the A’s (6-4) used a five-run eighth for the win.

Hitting Recap: 3B Wladimir Galindo doubled, tripled, and knocked in two to pace the offense. 1B Jose Paniagua had two hits and DH Joe Martarano was 1-for-5 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Trey McNutt saw his first action since Aug. 10 of 2013 after missing 2014 after surgery. The right-hander faced five hitters and gave up two hits and a walk in ? inning......Pedro Silverio, who started the season in the DSL, went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk.....Tanner Griggs continues to impress ow tof the bullpen, working 1.1 scoreless frames with two strikeouts....Trey Masek (0-1, 15.75 ERA) only got one out in the 8th, walking three and giving up a hit......Santiago Rodriguez got charged with a blown save as all three inherited runners scored as the right-hander gave up a run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.

Dominican Summer League—Brewers 11, Cubs 6
Brewers (11-17) pounded Cubs (15-14) pitching for 15 hits and took advantage of five errors.

Hitting Recap: RF Tony Rijo (.238) doubled in two runs while 1B Chris Pieters (.241), SS Fidel Mejia (.257), DH Luis Ubiera (.100) and C Raymond Pena (.061) all knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: Wander Cabrera (1-0, 1.77 ERA) had another strong outing as the 17-year-old left-hander fanned three over three innings. Hector Garcia (3.24 ERA) allowed five runs in three innings while Fauris Guerrero (3.60 ERA) surrendered four runs in his three innings.

Venezuelan Summer League—Rays 13, Cubs 5
Rays (26-14) ripped Cubs (18-22) pitching for 16 hits in the win.

Hitting Recap: CF Jose Gonzalez (.252) extended his VSL RBI lead (28) with a pair, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. RF Luis Ayala (.286) had two hits and LF Jose Rojas (.279) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Pitching Chart: Yapson Gomez allowed two runs over four innings as the starter but Alex Pacheco (1-3, 5.53 ERA) surrendered six runs in 2.1 frames and took the loss. Eugenio Palma tossed 1.2 frames of scoreless ball and Jose Leidenz yielded five runs in the top of the ninth.
