Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, New Orleans 3
Kyle Schwarber had three hits and slugged his second AAA homer to lead Iowa to their third straight win over New Orleans.
In the Box: Big night at the plate for Kyle Schwarber as the catcher had two doubles and a homer, knocking in a pair. Schwarber is hitting .358/.414/.642 in 15 games at AAA and .328/.433/592 with 15 homers and 17 doubles between AA and Iowa.....2B Arismendy Alcantara (.257) had three hits, scored twice, and stole his 12th base while CF Matt Szczur (.293) slugged his fifth homer, added a double and scored twice. 1B Christian Villanueva (.267) had two hits and 3B Mike Olt (.192) went 1-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Drake Britton (5-4, 4.86 ERA) was the beneficiary of the offense, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. Yoervis Medina (1.2 IP), Armando Rivero (1 IP) and Ben Rowan (1 IP) kept the Zephyrs off the board.
I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (1-4, 5.32 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night in Omaha......RHP Gonzlez Germen was claimed off waiver by the Colorado Rockies. Germen, who was claimed off waivers from the Rangers back in January, made his Cubs debut on April 22 and appeared in six games for Chicago, striking out eight in six innings with a 7.50 ERA. He spent most of the year in Iowa, going 5-1 with four saves in 24 games (33.1 IP, 17 BB, 27 K, .234 BAA, 1.38 WHIP, 3.78 ERA). He spent nine seasons in the Mets organization, making his pro debut in 2014.
In the Box: C Willson Contreras (.329) ripped a two-run double in the third and SS Elliot Soto (.264) delivered a RBI double in the 7th. Soto finished 3-for-5 and scored once while Contreras added a single. LF Bijan Rademacher (.238) and C Cael Brockmeyer (.333) both had two hits, including a double.
Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson may not be in AA much longer. The right-hander held the Barons to three hits over seven innings, allowing a run in the 7th. Johnson fanned three in his 88-pitch outing and had a game score of 68. Since coming off the DL in mid-June, Johnson has given up three runs in 23.2 innings on 18 hits and nine walks....Corey Black worked a 1-2-3 eighth and P.J. Francescon fanned two in the ninth for his 13th save.
Smokies News: Rob Zastryzny (0-1, 5.94 ERA) gets the start Wednesday night in Birmingham.....IF/OF Anthony Giansanti has been promoted to Iowa and IF Sutton Whiting, the Cubs 24th-round pick out of the University of Louisville, has been promoted from Eugene to Tennessee.
Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 1
The Dash scored two runs in the top of the ninth to beat Myrtle Beach.
Pitching Chart: David Berg’s High A debut was a tough one as the Cubs 6th round pick in June gave up two runs and took the loss. A single, a walk, a sac bunt and a two-run single gave the Dash the win....Brad Markey was impressive in his Myrtle Bech debut, allowing a run over six innings in only his second career start. Markey allowed four hits and threw 75 pitches for a game score of 62.....David Garner continues to blow away hitters in the Carolina League as the right-hander fanned three in two shutout innings.
Pelicans News: Michael Heesch, who was promoted to Iowa and never appeared in a game, was sent back to Myrtle Beach and LHP Tyler Ihrig was assigned to South Bend. Heesch will make his first start on Wednesday night for the Pelicans.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 2, Fort Wayne 1
Yasiel Balaguert’s two-run homer gave South Bend the win over Fort Wayne.
In the Box: Cubs only had four hits but 1B Yasiel Balaguert’s homer (5) was the difference. 3B Jason Vosler (.265) singled and scored while 2B Vimael Machin (.313) and RF Kevin Encarnacion (.272) both singled.
Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (4-5, 3.84 ERA) tossed eight solid innings, scattering seven hits and limiting the Tin Caps to a run. He fanned two and had a game score of 65. Tyler Ihrig arrived at the park from Myrtle Beach in the 8th inning and pitched the ninth for his second save.
SB-Cubs News: Erick Leal (6-5, 5.27 ERA) gets the ball on Wednesday nigh at Fort Wayne.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Vancouver 4
A four-run first propelled Eugene to their third straight win over Vancouver.
In the Box: 1B Matt Rose (.308) continues to pile up big hits, delivering a two-run single in the first as part of the four-run frames. 2B Frandy Delarosa (.288), DH Ian Rice (.350) and 3B Adonis Paula (.259) all had two hits. LF Donnie Dewees (.267) went 1-for-4 with a run scored while CF Ian Happ (.230) knocked in a run, walked twice, and scored a run.
Pitching Chart: Justin Steele improved to 3-0, tossing five innings with six strikeouts. Steele got charged with four runs but only one was earned. He threw two wild pitches and had a game score of 52.....Greyfer Eregua was unhittable in three innings, fanning seven while walking one. Jared Cheek got the final three outs, two on strikes, for his second save.
Emeralds Notes: Oscar De La Cruz (1-1, 1.69 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night in the series finale against Vancouver.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 9, Padres 2
Cubs used a five-run third to beat the Padres.
In the Box: 1B Jose Paniagua (.286) had the big blast, a grand slam in the third, one of two hits. CF Robert Garcia (.372) added two hits while RF Alex Bautista (.250) had two hits and scored twice. C Tyler Payne made his pro debut, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Pitching Chart: James Norwood continues his rehab with two shutout innings in his second start. Jesus Camargo had another strong outing, fanning seven in four scoreless innings. Luis Hernandez pitched a scoreless 8th and Jesus Castillo allowed two runs over the final two frames.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 6, Pirates 5
Cubs (18-15) grabbed an early lead and hung on for the win over the Pirates (13-20)
In the Box: 2B Edgar Rondon (.356) made it three straight multi-hit games, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. 3B Fidel Mejia (.258) had two hits and knocked in a run while CF Yovanny Cuevas (.245) singled, walked twice and drove in a run. SS Yeiler Peguero (.308) was back in the starting lineup and was 1-for-5.
Pitching Chart: Junior Marte (2-1, 1.64 ERA) fanned eight over five innings, giving up a run on three hits and two walks. He had a game score of 63. Jose Morel (6.60 ERA) gave up three runs in two frames, Miguel Esteves (7.03 ERA) allowed a run in 1.1 innings, and Aneuris Rosario (0.00 ERA) got the final two outs for his second save.
Venezuelan Summer League—Rays 6, Cubs 5—14 innings
Cubs (20-24) lost a marathon battle with the Rays (28-16).
In the Box: Cubs scored all their runs in the first two innings, three coming on Rafael Narea’s first career homer. Jhonny Bethencourt (.313) went 2-for-5 with two walks and Daniel Diaz (.177) had three hits.
Pitching Chart: The Cubs used six pitchers in the extra innings loss. Riger Fernandez (6.75 ERA) made his 8th start and only lasted an inning, giving up three runs. Juan Rengifo (1.82 ERA) got charged with his second blown save and Yapson Gomez (0-2, 2.00 ERA) took the loss after working three innings.
