Cubs July 8 Minors Recap

Rough night for the upper levels of the minors as all four affiliates got beat. Eugene scored eight times in the sixth to beat Vancouver while the Mesa Cubs downed the A’s at Fitch Park.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Omaha 7, Iowa 2
Omaha collected 11 hits off Iowa pitching and won the series opener.

In the Box: C Kyle Schwarber (.351) slugged his third AAA homer and LF Anthony Giansanti added a RBI double but that was all the offense as the I-Cubs only had three hits. SS Jonathan Mota (.259) singled and scored.

Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. He walked two, fanned four, threw 106 pitches, and had a game score of 42.....Joseph Ortiz gave up a three run homer in the 8th.

I-Cubs Notes: The Cubs have placed OF John Andreoli on the disabled list with a strained oblique and OF Roberto Caro has been promoted from Mesa. The 21-year-old is in his fourth season with the Cubs and made his stateside debut earlier this year for Mesa after playing his first three seasons in the Dominican........Carlos Pimentel was not only the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June he was also named the Pacific Coast League’s Player of the Month for June.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham 4, Tennessee 3
The Smokies 8th innings rally came a run short as BIrmingham beat Tennessee for the fourth time in the five-game series.

In the Box: Smokies outhit the Barons 11-6 but could only score in the 8th as Bijan Rademacher, Willson Contreras and Billy McKinney all knocked in runs. Rademacher went 3-for-4 while McKinney had two hits. 2B Sutton Whiting made his AA debut, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (0-2, 5.64 ERA) and his first inning woes continue. The left-hander gave up two runs in the first and pitched into the sixth finishing with aline of 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.....Michael Jensen threw 1.1 frames on no-hit ball and Rafael Soriano walked one in a scoreless eighth in his second outing in AA.

Smokies News: Felix Pena (5-4, 3.81 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night as the Smokies return home to face Biloxi.......P.J. Francescon has been named the Southern League’s top reliever for June.

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 5, Myrtle Beach 0
Winston-Salem used five hits and two walks and scored five times in the top of the ninth to beat Myrtle Beach.

In the Box: A double by Jacob Rogers and a single from Trey Martin were the only base runners for the Pelicans.

Pitching Chart: Michael Heesch made his first start since 2013, working five scoreless innings. The left-hander fanned three, gave up four hits, and threw 75 pitches, 55 for strikes.....Juan Paniagua may not be in Myrtle Beach much longer as the right-hander continues to have success in the Carolina League. Paniagua tossed three shutout innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts. He only needed 33 pitches, 21 for strikes, in his 18th game, lowering his ERA to 2.50. James Pugliese only got two outs in the ninth as the Dash got four hits and two walks, plating four runs. James Farris got the final out but not before allowing a run-scoring single.

Pelicans News: Jen-Ho Tseng (2-5, 4.28 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night in the final game of the series

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne 3, South Bend 1
Fort Wayne used a pair of homers to beat South Bend for the second time in three games.

In the Box: Cubs had seven hits but the only run scored on an inside-the-park homer from DH Jason Vosler (.265) in the sixth. LF Kevin Encarnacion (.271) and C Erick Castillo (.241) both doubled.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (6-6, 5.13 ERA) went seven innings but allowed a pair of solo homers and ended the night with a line of 7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB 0 K....Ryan McNeil worked a scoreless eighth.

SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (3-2, 5.14 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night in Fort Wayne..... South Bend has placed LHP Tommy Thorpe on the DL and RHP Alex Santana has been promoted from Eugene.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 8, Vancouver 4
The Emeralds scored all their runs in the sixth for their fourth straight win over the Canadians.

In the Box: 2B Frandy Delarosa (.300) had two doubles in the sixth and knocked in three runs to lead the rally. LF Donnie Dewees (.306) added two hits in the sixth, a leadoff single and a RBI double. Also driving in runs were Ian Happ (.231), Blake Headley (.235), Ricardo Marcarno (.179) and Ho-young Son (.207). Dewees had three hits in the game, including another double, his seventh of the season. Em’s had seven hits, six coming in the sixth.

Pitching Chart: Another strong outing for Oscar De La Cruz(2-1, 1.64 ERA) as the right-hander surrendered a run over six innings on two hits, He fanned six, walked two and had a game score of 68.....Trey Masek gave up three runs in 1.2 frames and Heath Dwyer got the final four outs, fanning two.

Emeralds Notes: The Em’s take their four-game winning streak to Tri-City on Thursday night. A starter has not been named but Jose Paulino is in line.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 12, A’s 8
Cubs (8-6) pounded out 15 hits and survived a six-run sixth to beat the A’s (7-8).

In the Box: 3B Wladimir Galindo (.353) went 3-for-4 and scored three times while RF Alex Bautista (.306) had three hits, scored four runs and knocked one in. DH Joe Martarano (.261) was 1-for-4 with four RBI and SS Andruw Monasterio (.235) had two hits and plated three runs.

Pitching Chart: Enrique De Los Rio (1-0, 4.73 ERA) won his first game, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over five innings. The 20-year-old right-hander fanned six and had a game score of 58.....Craig Brooks, the Cubs seventh-round pick from Catawba College, made his pro debut on Wednesday night. The right-hander recorded his first pro strikeout but allowed four runs on three hits and a walk, retiring only one hitter.....Michael Knighton let two inherited runners score and then allowed two more runs in 1.2 frames. Mark Malave tossed two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Malave,a former position player, has 12 K over 7 IP and has only given up two hits and no runs.

Cubs Notes: Shawon Dunston has started his second rehab stint in Mesa for a shoulder injury. He went 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI July 7 and was 1-for-2 with a single and two walks on Wednesday night. Dunston played 10 games with Myrtle Beach to open the season, missed nearly two months, returned to the Pelicans, and landed back on the DL after two games (June13-14).

Dominican Summer League—Pirates 6, Cubs 5—10 innings
Pirates (14-20) scored a run in the 9th and added the game-winner in the 10th to beat the Cubs (18-16).

In the Box: CF Chris Pieters (.283) went 2-for-5, stole his 16th base, and had the Cubs only RBI (15). 3B Fidel Mejia (.266) had two hits while SS Yeiler Peguero (.303) went 1-for-5 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (3.00 ERA) allowed four runs over five innings but only one of the runs was earned. He gave up five hits, walked one and fanned four. Wander Cabrera (1.54 ERA) tossed three no-hit innings of relief with two strikeouts. Julian Aybar (3-1, 2.87 ERA) got charged with the blown save and took the loss allowing a run in the 9th and 10th.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 6, Phillies 2
Cubs (21-24) scored three times in the 7th and added three more in the 9th to beat the Phillies (19-26).

In the Box: SS Francisco Garay (.145) went 2-for-3 and delivered RBI singles in both innings while CF Luis Ayala (.277) knocked in a pair with a single in the 9th. C Daniel Diaz (.182) added a RBI single and scored a run,

Pitching Chart: Freddy Tineo (5.46 ERA) tossed five shutout innings, allowing two hits while recording one strikeout in his eighth start, his best outing of the year. Bryan Molina (6.04 ERA) threw 1.1 scoreless innings for the win while Eugenio Palma (2.81 ERA) earned his third hold with 1.2 shutout frames. Jose Leidenz (5.56 ERA) got the final three outs.

Cubs Notes: RHP Omar Ventura has been assigned to the Cubs. The 18-year-old right hander has not made his pro debut.......Growing pains for two of the Cubs 17-year-old middle infielders as Francisco Garay made two throwing errors to bring his total to 22 and Rafael Narea committed his 20th error.
