Schwarber named MVP, 7/12 recap

Kyle Schwarber was named MVP of the Futures Game as the Cubs catcher got presented the trophy from Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. Recap of the minors action and a look at Cubs prospects in Pan-Am games.

Schwarber named Futures Game MVP
Iowa is in the all-star break but not all their players got the day off. C Kyle Schwarber earned MVP honors while Carl Edwards Jr. pitched in relief to the help Team USA beat the World Team 10-1 at the Futures Game in Cincinnati. Schwarber tripled in two runs to give USA a 3-1 lead and threw out a base runner trying to steal. He finished 1-for-3 and caught for five innings. Edwards started the eighth inning and after a fly out, gave up two singles and then fanned a hitter before leaving. Edwards threw 16 pitches, 11 for strikes, and was working in the 92-96 range with his fastball and a breaking ball in the low 80s.

Pacific Coast League—Iowa
Iowa had the day off and return to action on July 16 at Principal Park against Memphis.......Arismendy Alcantara and Carlos Pimentel will represent the I-Cubs and the PCL in the AAA All-Star game July 15 in Omaha......OF Mike Baxter is headed back to Iowa after being optioned from Chicago to make room on the 25-man roster for C David Ross. Miguel Montero has a jammed thumb so Ross was activated as a back-up and Taylor Teagarden will head back to Iowa when Montero is ready to go.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 8, Biloxi 2
Smokies took advantage of seven walks, two errors and some timely hitting to beat Biloxi.

In the Box: RF Billy McKinney (.310) extended his hitting streak to eight games, going 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk. P Pierce Johnson (.250) helped his own cause with a single and three RBI while PH Cael Brockmeyer (.286) returned to town and delivered a two-run, pinch-hit double. 2B Stephen Bruno (.268) scored two runs and knocked in a run while 3B Bryant Flete (.169) drew three free passes, scored a run and got credit for a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson (4-0, 1.26 ERA) gave up two walks and a double in the first inning but escaped with only one run. In his sixth start, Johnson improved to 4-0, limiting the Shuckers to just one run over five innings on five hits and four walks. He fanned four, got seven ground ball outs, and threw 85 pitches, 48 for strikes....Gerardo Concepcion and Rafael Soriano both retired the side in order and Zach Cates finished the game, allowing a run on two hits and a walk.

Smokies News: Rob Zastryzny (0-2, 5.64 ERA) gets the start on Monday night against Biloxi......C Cael Brockmeyer has returned to Tennessee after a brief stay at AAA Iowa.

Myrtle Beach scored five times in the 6th to take control of the suspended game and then lost a pitcher’s dual in the nightcap.

In the Box: GAME 1—DH Kevin Brown (.242) knocked in a career-high four runs to lead the offense, going 2-for-5 with his second homer. CF Trey Martin (.250) had two hits and two RBI while C Victor Caratini (.251) went 2-for-5 with a RBI.....Game 2—Only run of the game came in the sixth when Chesny Young (.327) doubled and scored on Jeimer Candelario’s single. Young went 2-for-3 while SS Carols Penalver (.232) and Jordan Hankins (.128) added singles.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Daury Torrez went 3.1 innings of no-hit ball with two walks before rain ended his outing. Michael Heesch took over and added 2.2 innings of shutout relief to improve to 6-0. David Garner fanned three over two scoreless frames and David Berg worked the ninth.....Game 2—Jeremy Null was solid for six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout. Null got eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 57. James Farris worked a scoreless seventh.

Pelicans News: Brad Markey (0-0, 1.50 ERA) makes his second start for Myrtle Beach.....With a single in the second game, Chesny Young has reached base in 31 straight contests...

Midwest League—Low A—Lake County 3, South Bend 1
Lake County blanked the Cubs for the first seven innings to end South Bend’s two-game win streak.

In the Box: Only five hits for the Cubs and they scored a run in the 8th when 2B Andrew Ely (.215) singled, took second on Rashad Crawford’s single, and scored when LF Charcer Burks (.273) made in three straight base knocks. Crawford (.277) went 2-for-4 and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.290) singled.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton fanned a career-high eight hitters but gave up a two-run homer in the second. He worked 6.2 frames, allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, hit two batters, and had a game score of 56......Dillon Maples tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges (4-5, 3.84 ERA) gets the ball Monday night in the final game of the series.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Tri-City 15, Eugene 2
Tri-City (13-12) blasted Eugene (14-11) pitching for 15 hits and scored seven runs in the third and added six more in the fourth.

In the Box: Only runs for Eugene came in the ninth when Ian Happ tripled and scored on Ian Rice’s double. Joey Martarano added a RBI single and was 2-for-4 in his first game in the NWL. Happ (.259) and Rice (.300) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Carson Sands (1-2, 2.78 ERA) got the start and didn’t make it out of the third, allowing six unearned runs on four hits and two walks....Tanner Griggs made his Eugene debut, allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks in two-thirds of an inning. Heath Dwyer surrendered a run in 1.2 frames and Trey Masek walked four and allowed a run in 1.1 innings. Preston Morrison made his pro debut and not only got out of a bases loaded jam, pitched a scoreless 8th.

Emeralds Notes: Three players were promoted from Mesa including Cubs 8th round pick Preston Morrison. Also promoted were 1B Joe Martarano and RHP Tanner Griggs......Eloy Jimenez hurt his hamstring and manager Gary Van Tol said after the injury he was day-to-day. That was back on July 3. Jimenez hasn’t been placed on the DL so that the only good sign but you should expect him to appear in the line-up any day.

Five Cubs (11-6) pitchers combined to blank the White Sox (10-9).

In the Box: Cubs only run came in the third when Darryl Wilson (.333) doubled and scored on Shawon Dunston’s RBI single. RF Robert Garcia (.345) and 1B Jose Paniagua (.259) had the Cubs other two hits.

Pitching Chart: Austyn Willis saw his first action since a July 3 start and threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Tyler Peitzmeier, Cubs 9th round pick in June, made his pro debut working a scoreless inning with a hit and a strikeout. Michael Knighton, Craig Brooks and Mark Malave all threw a scoreless frame with Malave earning his second save.

Pan-Am Games
Cubs have four prospects playing in the Pan-Am games—OF Albert Almora (USA), RHP Andres Santiago (Puerto Rico), RHP Jasvir Rakkar (Canada) and 3B Jesse Hodges (Canada).

On opening day of the games on Saturday, Santiago got the start in Puerto Rico’s 10-9, 10-inning win over the USA. The right-hander allowed five runs on five hits and two walks, and fanned four in two innings. Albert Almora went 0-for-1 and entered the game in the 7th. Neither Hodges or Rakkar saw action in Canada’s 4-1 win over the Dominican Republic.

On Sunday, Jasvir Rakkar made his Team Canada debut, working a scoreless ninth in their 10-3 win over Colombia. Albert Almora got his first start for the USA, going 1-for-2 with a walk in the 5-2 win over Cuba.
