Cubs July 13 Minors Recap

Right-hander Paul Blackburn returned to the mound for the first time over a month and helped Myrtle Beach to a 5-0 win. Zach Hedges fanned a career-high seven in South Bend’s victory and Eloy Jimenez returned to Eugene’s lineup with a pair of singles.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa
Iowa is in the midst of their All-Star break and get back to action on July 16 when they host Memphis with Tsuyoshi Wada on the mound. 2B Arismendy Alcantara and RHP Carlos Pimentel will represent the I-Cubs and the PCL at the AAA All-Star game July 15 in Omaha.......Break comes at a good time for Iowa who have put OF John Andreoli, IF Ryan Dent and IF Chris Valaika on the DL since the beginning of the month.

Southern League—AA—Biloxi (Brewers) 9, Tennessee 2
Biloxi collected 13 hits and beat Tennessee to take the five-gave series.

In the Box: An RBI single from LF Bijan Rademacher (.239) in the third and a run-scoring double from 1B Wes Darvill (.168) in the sixth was the only offense for the Smokies. SS Elliot Soto (.274) doubled and scored to extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games. RF Billy McKinney (.303) had his streak stopped at eight games.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (0-3, 6.08 ERA) made it through the first inning without allowing a run but the left-hander allowed four over the next 3.1 frames on six hits and five walks. Zastryzny threw 97 pitches, 53 for strikes, and finished with a game score of 32. Michael Jensen allowed an inherited runner to score and was charged with four runs on five hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Starling Peralta blanked the Shuckers for 1.1 innings and Rafael Soriano worked another scoreless inning, his fifth, despite walking two. Corey Black surrendered a run in the ninth.

Smokies News: Tennessee has Tuesday off and head to Montgomery for a five-game series with the Rays AA affiliate that begins Wednesday night.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Carolina 0
Paul Blackburn returned to the mound, and along with four Pelican’s relievers, blanked the Mudcats.

In the Box: 1B Jacob Rogers (.258) led the offensive attack with three hits and three RBI. Rogers leads all Cubs minor leaguers with 54 RBI. 2B Chesny Young (.330) had two singles and scored twice while C Victor Caratini (.248) and 2B Daniel Lockhart (.228) added RBI.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn was activated off the DL and saw his first action since June 11. The right-hander only threw three innings, limiting the Mudcats to two hits while striking out a pair. Brad Markey (1-0, 0.84) tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing two hits while fanning four. Juan Paniagua got the final out of the 8th and James Pugliese fanned two in the ninth.

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach takes Tuesday off and then heads to Potomac for a four-game set with the Nationals Advanced A squad.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 8, Lake County 1
South Bend pounded out 13 hits to beat Lake County for the third time in the four-game series.

In the Box: RF Jeffrey Baez (.193) was a triple shy of the cycle, slugging his third homer. He finished 3-for-4, scored twice, swiped a base, and knocked in three. Baez has struggled at the plate but has 10 assists in right field and is 14-for-15 in stolen bases.....CF Charcer Burks (.275) and 2B David Bote (.218) both had two hits and scored twice while 1B Gioskar Amaya (.274) went 2-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (5-5, 3.64 ERA) fanned a career-high seven hitters and held the Captains to one run over seven innings. He allowed four hits, three walks, got 10 ground ball outs, and had a game score of 69.....Ryan McNeil pitched the final two innings, allowing a hit and a walk. The right-hander hasn’t issued an earned run over his last eight innings, four games..

SB-Cubs News: South Bend has Tuesday off and travel to Lansing on Wednesday for three games with the Blue Jays affiliate.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Tri-City 5, Eugene 4
Tri-City scored in the bottom of the 7th to thwart a Eugene comeback and hand the Emeralds their fourth straight loss.

In the Box: 3B Matt Rose (.250) delivered a run-scoring double in the fourth for Eugene’s only RBI in the game. LF Donnie Dewees (.281) singled, stole second and scored after two wild pitches. A Tri-City throwing error in the 8th allowed two runs to score. RF Eloy Jimenez (.313) returned to the line-up for the first time since July 3 and went 2-for-4 and scored once. 2B Frandy Delarosa (.304), who had his 15-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday, had two hits and walked once.

Pitching Chart: Justin Steele (1.08 ERA) only lasted three innings as four hits and three walks led to three runs, all unearned. Steele fanned two and had a game score of 44.....Jae-Hoon Ha (2.38 ERA) allowed an unearned run in 2.2 innings and John Williamson (0-1, 12.60 ERA) took the loss allowing two walks and a double after Eugene had tied the game at 4-4. Pedro Araujo (4.41 ERA) got out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th and pitched a scoreless eighth.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene takes Tuesday off and return home on Wednesday for three game with first-place Hillsboro.

Arizona Rookie League—Royals 6, Cubs 1
Royals (14-5) collected 13 hits in the win over the Cubs (11-7).

In the Box: Only six hits for the Cubs, two each from RF Robert Garcia (.356) and 1B Jose Paniagua (.276). Alex Bautista (.255) knocked in the only run with a RBI groundout in the first.

Pitching Chart: James Norwood (0-2, 6.00 ERA), rehabbing from South Bend, got the start and went three innings, allowing three runs on six hits, and took the loss. Trey McNutt worked a scoreless inning and Jesus Camargo got tagged for three runs on five hits in three innings, despite fanning five. Erling Moreno got two outs in the 8th and Jesus Castillo worked 1.1 scoreless innings.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Mets II 3
Yeiler Peguero’s walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs the win over the Mets.

In the Box: Cubs were kept off the board for seven innings until Chris Pieters swatted his second homer to tie the game at 2-2. After the Mets took the lead in the ninth, Erick Gonzalez led off with a single, and pinch runner Franklin Tineo advanced to third after a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Samir Lara. Lara then stole second and Peguero delivered the game-winner. Peguero finished 2-for-5 and Pieters continues to tear up the DSL, going 3-for-4 and was a double shy of the cycle. Gonzalez also doubled.

Pitching Chart: Cubs pitching held the Mets to just two hits .Junior Marte no-hit the Mets for five innings, with seven strikeouts and a walk. The 20-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.42 with 37 K in 33 IP. Jose Morel gave up three runs in three innings and Aneuris Rosario (1-0, 0.00 ERA) got the win with a scoreless ninth.

Venezuelan Summer League—Phillies 3, Cubs 1
Cubs were held to just five hits and dropped their third straight.

In the Box: RF Jhonny Bethencourt’s (.312) RBI single in the 7th was the only offense for the Cubs. DH Luis Ayala (.272), 2B Henrry Pedra (.194), 3B Francisco Garay (.146), and SS Renaldo Lopez (.214) all singled.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Arias got the start and went five innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits and no walks, he fanned four and had a game score of 49. Yapson Gomez worked the final four frames, allowing a run on three hits.

Albert Almora got the start in left field and went 0-for-3 with a walk in USA’s 5-3 win over Columbia. Jesse Hodges struckout as a pinch hitter and then played third base for two innings in Canada’s 6-4 win over Nicaragua.
