Cubs July 20 Minors Recap

Here’s a look at action around the Cubs affiliates from July 20 as Iowa and Myrtle Beach extended their win streaks. Plenty of roster moves including a new catcher at AAA.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, Round Rock (Rangers) 1
Iowa (52-43) made it six in a row with a series opening win over Round Rock (53-41) at Principal Park.

In the Box: CF Rubi Silva (.277) homered for the third straight game, part of a 2-for-4 night with three RBI and two runs scored. RF Junior Lake (.325) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two hits and a RBI. DH Matt Szczur (.280) had two hits, including a double, while C Taylor Davis (.305) and 3B Mike Olt (.234) were both 2-for-4. C Luke Carlin made his Cubs debut, entering the game in the 8th on defense and striking out in the bottom of the inning.

Pitching Chart: Drake Britton (6-4, 4.39 ERA) got the start and held the Express to a Joey Gallo solo homer over seven innings. He gave up six hits, fanned six, and threw 89 pitches, 61 for strikes. Armando Rivero (3.12 ERA) and Yoervis Medina (7.03 ERA) both threw a scoreless inning of relief.

I-Cubs Notes: The Cubs added C Luke Carlin to the roster along with IF Chris Valaika, who was activated from the DL. IF Angelo Amendolare was assigned to Mesa and C Cael Brockmeyer was sent to Myrtle Beach......Released by the A’s in June, the 34-year-old Carlin was drafted by the Tigers back in 2002 and has played in 56 MLB games with the Padres (2008), D-Backs (2009) and Indians (2010 & 2012). He spent the last three seasons catching in AAA and has a career .241/.353/.342 slash in 891 minor league games. He signed a minor league deal on July 17.......The Cubs have released RHP Barret Loux, who was acquired from the Rangers in a trade back in November of 2012. The 26-year-old missed all of 2014 with an arm injury and made three starts this year in AAA Iowa before going in the DL.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham (White Sox) @ Tennessee
Monday night’s game at Smokies Stadium was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on Tuesday with first pitch at 5:35 p.m. EST. Felix Pena (5-6, 4.17 ERA) and Ivan Pineyro (5-5, 4.15 ERA) will take the mound for the Smokies.......LHP Zac Rosscup will join the squad as part of his rehab assignment.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Salem 1
Myrtle Beach (14-11, 55-39) made it seven straight with their second win over Salem (11-14, 49-46).

In the Box: Chesny Young (.346) went 1-for-4 with a RBI to extend his on-base streak to 39 games and up his hit streak to nine straight. RF Mark Zagunis (.282), DH Jeimer Candelario (.270) and 2B Daniel Lockhart (232) all delivered RBI doubles.

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (2-0, 1.08 ERA) made his second start for Myrtle Beach and lasted six innings, allowing a solo homer, one of three hits. The Cubs 19th round pick last year out of Virginia Tech walked one, fanned two and had a game score of 63.....Fernando Cruz (2.73 ERA) tossed two scoreless innings and David Berg (4.50 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first Carolina League save.

Pelicans News: Jen-Ho Tseng (3-6, 3.67 ERA), who was originally set to take the mound on Monday night will pitch on Tuesday......Cael Brockmeyer’s tour around the Cubs full-season affiliates continued on Monday as the catcher was sent from Iowa back to Myrtle Beach. To make room for Brockmeyer, RHP Jeremy Null was placed on the 7-day DL.

Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan (Tigers) 4, South Bend 0
West Michigan (16-8, 49-44) blanked South Bend (13-12, 42-50) to take the series.

In the Box: Gleyber Torres went 2-for-3 with a double and was hit-by-a-pitch, extending his hitting streak to seven-games. Its his fifth straight multi-hit game and he’s 12-for-22 during the stretch. Jeffrey Baez extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the first inning. Charcer Burks returned to the lineup for the first time since July 15, going 1-for-4 as the DH.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (5-6, 3.74 ERA) allowed four runs over 7.1 innings on eight hits and a walk. South Bend turned three double play as Hedges coaxed 14 ground ball outs......Alex Santana allowed two inherited runners to score in the 8th and then worked 1.2 scoreless innings.

SB-Cubs News: Erick Leal (6-6, 4.97 ERA) gets the start on Tuesday night at Four Winds Field against Great Lakes.....South Bend activated Pan-Am Games Gold medalist Jesse Hodges from the inactive list and transferred IF Vimael Machin to Eugene.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Vancouver 8, Eugene 0
Vancouver (13-19) made it two straight over Eugene (16-16).

In the Box: Only five hits for the Emeralds, two from RF Ricardo Marcano (.229). C Justin Marra (.208) doubled while C Alberto Mineo (.133) and 2B Frandy Delarosa (.280) both singled. CF Donnie Dewees (.225) went 0-for-4 and is just 1-for-his-last-20.

Pitching Chart: For the second straight night, the Canadians feasted on a young left-handed arm, tagging Justin Steele (3-1, 2.40 ERA) for eight runs on 10 hits and three walks.....Trey Masek (6.43 ERA) threw two perfect frames and Kyle Miller made his NWL debut, allowing two hits in a scoreless eighth.

Emeralds Notes: Pitches Casey Bloomquist and Kyle Miller have been promoted from Mesa to Eugene. IF Vimael Machin has been assigned to Eugene from South Bend.

Arizona Rookie League—Angels 5, Cubs 4
Angels (15-9) scored in the 7th and 8th to rally past the Cubs (12-11) at Sloan Park.

In the Box: Cubs had 10 hits but only one went for extra bases, a double from 1B Jose Paniagua (.301), one of his two hits. SS Carols Sepulveda (.230) and RF Michael Foster (.308) had two hits each while Angelo Amendolare knocked in a run in his AZL debut.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Camargo (3.00 ERA) got the start and went four innings, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk. He fanned four and gave up a three-run homer.....Craig Brooks (15.43 ERA) worked a scoreless fifth and according to John Arguello of Cubs Den, he was spinning his fastball at 91-93 with a 87 MPH breaking ball (slider)......Jesus Castillo (6.00 ERA) worked two innings, surrendering a run while Luis Hernandez (0-1, 0.00 ERA) took the loss, giving up an unearned run on two walks. Ariel Ovando (1.13 ERA0 fanned two in a scoreless ninth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs released RHP Marcelo Carreno on June 17. The right-hander was acquired as the player to be named later in the Jeff Baker trade in 2012 and missed two season with injuries. He made his Cubs debut last year in Mesa, appearing in three games (0-1, 4.76 ERA, 5.2 IP, 4 BB, 4 K).

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 7, Braves 2
Cubs (22-21) scored four times in the second and beat the Braves (18-25).

In the Box: 2B Fidel Mejia (.268) went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored while LF Sami Lara (.174) singled and knocked in a pair. DSL All-Star MVP Yeiler Peguero (.316) had two hits, including a double. CF Yovanny Cuevas (.240), DH Tony Rijo (.221) and C Erick Gonzalez all knocked in runs.,

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia got the start and went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 47.....Wander Cabrera (2-1, 1.78 ERA) tossed four no-hit innings for his second win. The 17-year-old left-hander walked four and struckout four......Sucre Valdez (1.42 ERA) worked around a hit and two walks in a scoreless ninth.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 5, Tigers 1
The Cubs (23-31) snapped their eight-game losing streak with a win over the Tigers (28-27).

In the Box: Cubs scored four times in the bottom of the first as CF Jose Gonzalez (.239), 1B Fidel Matos (.242) and DH Gustavo Polanco (.232) all plated runs. Matos added a solo homer in the third, his 4th. 3B Henrry Pedra (.221) and Polanco both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus got the start and held the Tigers to one run over three innings, working around four hits and three walks. Omar Ventura only got one out and walked two before departing in the fourth. Moises Ramirez (2-3, 2.35 ERA) got the win, stranding two inherited runners in the 4th, and working two more scoreless frames. Eugenio Palma (2.13 ERA) blanked the Tigers the final three innings for his second save.
