Cubs July 21 Minors Recap

Catcher Cael Brockmeyer slugged a grand slam as Myrtle Beach won its eighth straight. Bryant Flete’s walk-off homer gave the Smokies a sweep over the White Sox AA affiliate and Erick Leal twirled a gem in South Bend’s win.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 6, Iowa 5
Round Rock (54-41) used a five-run third to snap Iowa’s (52-44) six-game win streak.

In the Box: RF Rubi Silva (.277) homered for the fourth straight game, a two-run blast in the second. 3B Christian Villanueva (.275) smacked his 13th homer, a solo shot in the third, and finished 2-for-5. 1B Mike Olt (.241) went 1-for-2 with a RBI and two walks while DH Junior Lake (.321) walked twice, drove in a run and scored once.

Pitching Chart: Tsuyoshi Wada (1-4, 3.49 ERA) threw 88 pitches in his third AAA rehab start. The left-hander allowed six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts......Sidewinder Ben Rowen fanned three in 1.2 innings and Armando Rivero worked a scoreless eighth. Blake Cooper worked the final two scoreless innings, recording four on strikeouts.

Bryant Flete walk-off homer in the second game completed Tennessee’s sweep of Birmingham.

In the Box: GAME 1—Smokies scored all their runs in the first on a two-run double from C Willson Contreras (.317) and a RBI fielder’s choice ground out by Jeimer Candelario in his first AA at-bat. The Smokies loaded the bases on singles by SS Elliot Soto, CF Albert Almora and RF Bijan Rademacher (.258) and they all scored. Candelario finished 0-for-2 and DH Jacob Rogers was 0-for-2 with a walk in his AA debut.; GAME 2—2B Bryant Flete (.167) picked a great time for his first homer since 2012, a walk-off, two-run blast in the bottom of the 7th to provide the sweep for Tennessee. The 22-year-old finished 1-for-3. Elliot Soto (.276) had two hits and CF Albert Almora (.252) went 1-for-2 with a RBI single in the first. Candelario collected his first AA hit, a single.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Felix Pena fanned a career-high ten hitters and worked into the fifth, leaving with a runner on and two outs. He finished with a line of 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB 10K.....P.J Francescon allowed an inherited runner to score but tossed 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed two hits and fanned two.....Zac Rosscup, on a rehab assignment from Chicago, made his first AA appearance, striking out the side for his first save. The left-hander fanned five in two innings in Mesa before arriving in Kodak.; GAME 2—Ivan Pineyro (6-5, 3.95 ERA) went the distance, allowing a run on seven hits. Pineyro fanned seven and threw 96 pitches, 64 for strikes.

Smokies News: Pierce Johnson (4-0, 1.27 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday at Chattanooga......Huge roster shake-up and it stands at 25 players. Albert Almora was taken off the inactive list, along with RHP Andres Santiago as they both returned from the Pan-Am games. 3B Jeimer Candelario, 1B Jacob Rogers and RHP Juan Paniagua were all promoted from Myrtle Beach. RHP Michael Jensen has been placed on the DL, IF Varonex Cuevas has been sent to Mesa, IF Sutton Whiting has been transferred to Eugene, and LHP Jeffry Antigua went to Iowa.

Cael Brockmeyer hit a grand slam as Myrtle Beach won its eighth straight with a victory over Salem.

In the Box: C Cael Brockmeyer (.188) hit a grand slam and knocked in a career-high five runs, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. DH Kevin Brown (.256) had a career-high four hits, including two doubles, and knocked in a run......2B Chesny Young (.347) had two hits to extended his hit streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 40. C Victor Caratini (.242) doubled, knocked in two, and scored twice while RF Mark Zagunis (.287) had three hits and crossed home three times. SS Carlos Penalver (.223) had two RBI while 2B Daniel Lockhart (.232) and CF Trey Martin (.233) added one each.

Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (4-6, 3.44 ERA) didn’t have his best stuff and walked three but did keep the Red Sox off the board over five plus frames. He fanned three, threw 91 pitches, and had a game score of 57.....James Pugliese (2.32 ERA) was nearly perfect over three innings, issuing just a walk while getting six ground ball outs. Jasvir Rakkar (2.32 ERA) saw his first action since winning gold at the Pan-Am Games for Canada The right-hander worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a stikeout.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (6-1, 2.67 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night at Lynchburg......3B Jeimer Candelario, 1B Jacob Rogers and RHP Juan Paniagua were all promoted to AA Tennessee on Tuesday. Jasvir Rakkar was taken off the in-active list after his appearance in the Pan-Am games for Canada and IF Jason Vosler was promoted from South Bend.

Erick Leal tossed an eight-inning gem as South Bend blanked Great Lakes.

In the Box: RF Jeffrey Baez (.234) stayed hot and extended his hit streak to 10 games with three singles. It was his seventh multi-hit game in his last eight. LF Charcer Burks (.274), 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.290), C Gioskar Amaya (.271) and 2B David Bote (.236) all plated runs. CF Rashad Crawford (.288) doubled, walked and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (7-6, 4.52 ERA) threw a career-high eight shutout innings and fanned eight in his best outing of season. The right-hander scattered seven hits and walked one for a game score of 75........Ryan McNeil (2.75 ERA) worked his 10th straight scoreless inning, striking out two in the 9th.

SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (4-3, 5.00 ERA) makes his 16th start on Wednesday night.

Eugene was held off the board until the ninth as Vancouver won is third straight over the Emeralds.

In the Box: RF Eloy Jimenez (.289) broke up the shutout in the 9th with his third homer. LF Donnie Dewees (.226), 2B Frandy Delarosa (.279), 3B Adonis Paula (.256) and CF Kevonte Mitchell (.134) all singled.

Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz (2-2, 2.23 ERA) only allowed one earned run over six innings on four hits and two walks. He fanned two and had a game score of 59......Greyfer Eregua (1.82 ERA) gave up a run over the final two frames on two hits and two strikeouts.

Cubs (13-11) scored seven times over the first four innings to beat the Indians (10-15).

In the Box: RF Michael Foster (.379) went 3-for-3 and walked twice while CF Robert Garcia (.376) and 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.239) had two hits each. 1B Jose Paniagua (.295) and Sepulveda both knocked in two runs. C Tyler Payne (.231) single, walked twice and scored two runs.

Pitching Chart: Matt Brazis, acquired from the Mariners for Justin Ruggiano back in December, returned to the mound for the first time in three months and tossed a scoreless first. The 25-year-old right-hander started the year in Myrtle Beach, pitched in three Carolina League games with two saves (4.2 IP), before begin promoted to AA. He only threw one inning in AA before going on the DL.....Pedro Silverio (1-0, 2.25 ERA) won his first game stateside, allowing a run over three innings with two strikeouts. Trey McNutt worked a scoreless frame, Enrique De Los Rio tossed three shutout innings and Scott Effross got the final three outs, two on strikes.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2, Braves 1
Edgar Rondon’s RBI single in the 11th gave the Cubs the win over the Braves.

In the Box: Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI single from Rafael Mejia (.254). Three straight singles from Mejia, Chris Pieters and Rondon put the Cubs ahead in the 11th.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada (1-0, 2.10 ERA) blanked the Braves for five innings, surrendering four hits while fanning four in his fourth start. Pablo Ochoa tossed three no-hit innings with three strikeouts and Julian Aybar (4-1, 3.32 ERA) got charged with a blown save and got the win, allowing a run in over 2.1 innings with 4 K. Aneuris Rosario (0.00 ERA) got the final two outs for his third save.

Tigers (29-27) blanked the Cubs (23-32) for six innings and hung on for the win.

In the Box: 1B Fidel Matos (.258) went 3-for-4 and scored once while RF Luis Hidalgo (.149) added a pair of singles and walked. LF Luis Ayala (.270) ripped a RBI double and 2B Ronaldo Lopez (.222) plated a run.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Arias (1-3, 2.93 ERA) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in four innings with four strikeouts. Alex Pacheo (4.93 ERA) worked a scoreless inning and Mauro VaIdes (9.19 ERA) walked three and gave up a run the sixth. Harrinson Bermudez (4.15 ERA) yielded a run in 1.1 innings and Juan Rengifo (1.64 ERA) got the final two outs.
