Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 9, Nashville 0
Javier Baez smacked a pair of homers in his return to AAA as Iowa (54-49) routed Nashville (45-59).
In the Box: Javier Baez (.317) made some noise in his return against the Sounds, sending a pair of solo homers over the left field wall. He capped off a seven-run second with his 9th homer of the year and then added # 10 in the top of the ninth. It was his third multi-homer game of the year and the 9th of his career....In the seven-run second, C Taylor Davis (.284) knocked in the first run and CF Rubi Silva (.280) followed with a two-run triple. After a Matt Szczur (.301) single scored Silva, LF Junior Lake (.321) launched his 7th homer of the season......3B Mike Olt (.290) and Szczur both extended their hit streaks to nine games.
Pitching Chart: In his first game since being optioned from Chicago, Clayton Richard dominated Nashville for seven frames, allowing just three hits while striking out four. He got 13 ground ball outs, threw 88 pitches, 67 for strikes, and had a game score of 75......Armando Rivero (2.79 ERA) tossed two shutout innings, allowing a hit and two walks to go along with three strikeouts.
I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (2-6, 4.71 ERA) gets the ball in the second game at Nashville......Zac Rosscup has been assigned to Iowa to continue his rehab.....LHP Jeffry Antigua has been sent back to Tennessee for the fourth time this year.....Chicago recalled RHP Dallas Beeler and optioned Yoervis Medina to Iowa.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 8, Montgomery 0
Ivan Pineyro tossed seven shutout innings and Willson Contreras had three hits, including a grand slam to lead Tennessee over Montgomery in the first game of the series.
In the Box: C Willson Contreras (.317) was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 including his 6th homer, a grand slam in the sixth.....CF Albert Almora (.242) smacked his second homer in four games, delivering a two-run shot in the third off Rays pitching prospect Taylor Guerrieri. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.276) and C Tyler Pearson (.150) had two hits each while Elliot Soto (.273) singled, walked and scored twice.
Pitching Chart: Ivan Pineyro (7-5, 3.69 ERA) blanked the Biscuits for seven innings, allowing fie hits while walking two. It was his second straight start going seven innings and he fanned four in the 87 pitch outing......Corey Black (4.29 ERA) completed the shutout with two scoreless frames, striking out three while walking one.
Smokies News: Pierce Johnson (4-0, 1.73 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night in Montgomery.
In the Box: 3B Jason Vosler (.313) slugged a pair of homers, a solo shot in the second and a two-run blast in the fifth. It was the second day in a row he had homered.....DH Kevin Brown (.266) had a pair of singles and scored twice while CF Trey Martin (.237) went 2-for-3 with a double and knocked in a run.
Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez pitched a carer-high eight innings, limiting the Nationals to just three hits. The 21-year-old fanned four, didn’t walk anyone, and only needed 86 pitches, 64 for strikes. He had a game score of 80......Fernando Cruz only got twos out in the ninth and left with the bases loaded......David Berg allowed all three inherited runners to score, giving up two hits, but got the final out for his second save.
Pelicans News: Daury Torrez (7-6, 3.98 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night in the second game of the series with Potomac.....Pelican Manger Mark Johnson has been named the manger of the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League. Johnson will be in charge of prospects from the Cubs, A’s, Rays, Mariners and Angels.
Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes 4, South Bend 1
Great Lakes (13-19, 51-49) scored three times in the first and beat South Bend (16-16, 45-54).
In the Box: Only six hits for South Bend, including a solo homer from Jeffrey Baez, his sixth......3B Jesse Hodges (.249) and CF Rashad Crawford (.287) had two hits each......First-round pick LF Ian Happ went 1-for-4 and is 4-for-10 in three games......Bryant Flete was assigned to South Bend from AA Tennessee (38 G, .163/.281/.212, 1 HR, 9 RBI). He got the start at second on Tuesday (0-3).
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (7-7, 4.52 ERA) gave up fou rhits and three runs in the first and then kept the loon soff the board the next five frames on three hits. He walked one and fanned five for a game score of 50.....Ryan McNeil’s scoreless streak ended at 12.1 innings, surrounding a run on three hits in two frames. McNeil (2.68 ERA) fanned three in his 22nd appearance.
SB-Cubs News: Trevor Clifton (3-8, 4.97 ERA) is listed as the starter on Wednesday night but a roster move will need to be made as he’s currently on the DL.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Boise 5, Eugene 1
Eugene only managed four hits as Boise scored all the runs they needed in the first inning.
In the Box: Emeralds were blanked for eight innings before Alex Bautista (.333) hit his second homer in the NWL in the ninth, a solo shot. 2B Andrew Ely (.286) went 2-for-4 and DH Ian Rice (.265) singled. Eloy Jimenez singled in the fourth but was replaced by Bautista in the top of the fifth. No word on why Jimenez was pulled.
Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (1-4, 4.73 ERA) fanned seven over six innings but surrendered two runs in the first. He allowed four hits, walked three and had a game score of 60.....Mark Malave made his NWL debut on the mound, tossing two scoreless innings. Tyler Peitzmeier worked the ninth, giving up three runs, including a solo homer.
Emeralds Notes: Preston Morrison (0-1, 1.59 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night as the Ems head to Spokane.....OF Eloy Jimenez and pitchers Oscar De La Cruz and Pedro Araujo were named to the Northwest League All-Star team. The NWL will meet the Pioneer League in Spokane on Aug. 4 in Spokane.
Arizona Rookie League—Game 1—Cubs 12, D-Backs 1; Game 2—Cubs 8, D-Backs 4
Winning the suspended game in an offensive onslaught, the Cubs completed the sweep with a six-run inning in the night-cap.
In the Box: GAME 1—No shortage of hitting stars in this one.....2B P.J. Higgins launched his first pro homer, a two-run shot in the third. The Cubs 12th round pick went 3-for-5 with a double....Jose Paniagua had three hits, scored three times and knocked in a pair while RF Michael Foster doubled in two runs...Andrew Monasterio had two hits and scored three times while Roberto Caro and Yohan Matos had two hits apiece.....GAME 2—Cubs scored six times in the 4th, three coming on 1B Jose Paniagua’s (.314) third homer. RF Robert Garcia (.364) went 1-for-3, knocked in a pair, and scored twice. 3B Angelo Amendolare (.300) and DH Varonex Cuevas (.250) had two hits each.
Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Enrique De Los Rio (1-0 , 4.15 ERA) tossed 4.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits while striking out three. Trey McNutt got the final out of the fifth and Michael Knighton allowed a run in his three innings. Heath Dwyer worked a 1-2-3 ninth......GAME 2—Pedro Silverio got the start and went four innings, allowing all four runs in the third, three coming on a homer. He finished with a game score of 35 and a line of 4 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.....Carlos Rodriguez (3-1, 5.51 ERA fanned four in two scoreless frames to earn the win and M’T. Minacci (4.50 ERA) pitched the ninth without allowing a run.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 3, Marlins 2
DH Samir Lara (.283) walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th to give the Cubs the win over the Marlins.
Pitching Chart: Junior Marte (1.42 ERA) continues to build on his fine season, fanning seven in six innings. He allowed a run on six hits and two walks, and finished with a game score of 61. Julian Aybar (6-1, 2.55 ERA) gave up an unearned run in two innings and fanned two. Aneuris Rosario tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 6th save and has yet to allow an earned run in 10 innings, 11 games.
In the Box: C Gustavo Polanco (.265) had four hits and knocked in a run while 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.317) went 2-for-4, doubled and scored three times. CF Jose Gonzalez (.246) had two hits and knocked in three runs while DH Luis Ayala (.274) went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
