The Cubs have promoted right-handed reliever Ben Rowen from Iowa to Chicago. Rowan was needed after the Cubs placed Neil Ramirez on the DL with a left abdominal soreness. To make room for Rowan on the 40-man roster, OF Mike Baxter was designated for assignment. The Cubs signed Rowen to a minor league deal on July 5 and he appeared in eight games at Iowa, allowing six hits and a walk in 9.1 scoreless innings. The side-winder started the year in the Orioles organization after making his MLB debut for Texas last year. Drafted in 2010 out Virginia Tech, the 26-year-old has logged over 300 innings in his six-year minor league career, all in relief. Rowen has a career ERA of 1.75 and a WHIP of 1.0. He has 8.2 innings of major league experience under his belt, making eight appearances with Texas last year. with 10 hits, four earned runs, going 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA and seven strikeouts in 8.2 innings......The Cubs also optioned Dallas Beeler to Iowa and recalled RHP Yoervis Medina.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Nashville 6, Iowa 4
Nashville (46-59) scored four times in the bottom of the 8th to rally past Iowa (54-50).
In the Box: RF Rubi Silva (.283) went 2-for-4 with his 11th homer, doubled, and scored twice. 1B Junior Lake (.319) and CF John Andreoli (.272) added RBI. SS Javier Baez (.309) went 0-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino fanned a season-high 12 hitters and blanked the Sounds for six innings. The first three hitters of the 7th all reach, with two scoring. Paulino ended the night with a games score of 68 and a line of 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 12 K......Ryan Buchter made his Cubs debut after the left-hander signed a free agent contract last week. He stranded an inherited runner and worked a scoreless 7th...... Zac Rosscup recorded two strikeouts in his AAA rehab debut but got charged with two runs in the 8th on a walk and a hit. Brian Schlitter (2-2, 1.17 ERA) allowed two inherited runners to score and then gave up two more unearned runs. He got saddled with his second blown save and took the loss.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Montgomery 2
Behind a strong pitching performance, Tennessee (14-17, 53-47) won its second straight at Montgomery (18-13, 52-47).
In the Box: RF Billy McKinney (.280) went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI while 1B Jacob Rogers (.231) plated a pair of runs......CF Albert Almora (.244) was on base four times with a single and three walks...... Cubs infielder Tommy LaStella saw his first game action since he left a AA rehab start back on May 17 with an oblique strain. The 26-year-old singled and scored twice......SS Elliot Soto (.276) added two singles.
Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson tossed seven solid innings, allowing a run on four hits and two walks. The right-hander fanned seven, had a game score of 79, and thew 97 pitches, 67 for strikes. I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw Johnson in Wrigley by the end of the season, and maybe sooner if the Cubs can’t land a back of the rotation arm before the trade deadline......Starling Peralta (2.80 ERA) only got two outs in the 8th, giving up a solo homer...P.J. Francescon (0.92 ERA) recorded the final four outs for his 15th save.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Potomac 5
Trey Martin hit a three-run homer and Daury Torrez worked six solid innings to lead Myrtle Beach (19-15, 60-43) over Potomac (15-17, 48-54) for the second straight night.
In the Box: Pelicans had 12 hits but none bigger than CF Trey Martin’s first homer of the season, a three-run blast in the 7th that gave MB an 8-3 lead. Martin (.242) finished 2-for-3, scored twice and swiped his 12th base.....DH Daniel Lockhart (.230), C Victor Caratini (.243) and 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.194) all had two hits while SS Carlos Penalver tripled in a run.
Pitching Chart: Daury Torrez (8-6, 3.92 ERA) was in command, allowing two runs over six innings on four hits. He fanned four and only needed 76 pitches, throwing 55 for strikes, for a game score of 60....James Pugliese got roughed up for three runs in the 8th as the right-hander allowed seven hits in 1.2 innings. James Farris (6.75 ERA) got the final out of the 8th and Jasvir Rakkar (2.38 ERA) worked the 9th for his 12th save.

South Bend only managed five hits as three Great Lakes arms shut them down.
Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (3-9, 5.00 ERA) fanned seven over five innings but got charged with three runs on four hits and four walks...... Michael Wagner (2.91 ERA) gave up two runs over three innings with three punchouts.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 4, Spokane 3
An error allowed Ricardo Marcano to score from first on a single in the top of the 7th to give Eugene the win over Spokane in the series opener.
In the Box: LF Ricardo Marcano (.244) went 3-for-3, knocked in a pair and scored the game-winner when the centerfield misplayed CF Donnie Dewees (.228) single. SS Andrew Ely (.364) had a pair of hits while Kevonte Mitchell tripled and scored.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (1.17 ERA) got the start and tossed two scoreless frames with two punchouts.....Kyle Twomey (3.00 ERA) fanned three in two shutout innings and Scott Frazier allowed a run on three hits in the fifth in his NWL season debut. Craig Brooks got charged with a blown save, allowing two runs in the sixth but got credit for the win, his first as a pro, when the Ems regained the lead....Greyfer Eregua (2.05 ERA) silenced the Indians the final three innings, recording five punchouts for his first save.

Cubs (16-15) could only managed five hits in the loss to the Diamondbacks (13-19).
In the Box: CF Roberto Caro (.233) knocked in the only run on a ground out while DH Varonex Cuevas (.250) doubled in four trips. Robert Garcia (.359), SS Andruw Monasterio (.224), 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.241) and 1B Jose Paniagua (.314) all singled.
Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch made his first rehab appearance, working into the third. The left-hander allowed three unearned runs on three hits and a walk....Matt Brazis, another arm rehabbing in Mesa, fanned two in 1.2 innings......Rough outing for Dylan Cease, who didn’t make it out of the fifth, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk. Ariel Ovando struckout two in 2.1 innings while Scott Effross worked the final two frames, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

Cubs (29-22) scored six runs in their first two at-bats and crushed the Pirates (20-31)
In the Box: DH Luis Ubiera (.203) had four hits and knocked in a run while 2B Edgar Rondon (.346) and Chris Pieters (.313) each had three hits and two RBI. LF Samir Lara (.300) went 2-for-4, scored three times, knocked in a run and walked twice. RF Wander Feliz (.254) had two doubles and plated a run.
Pitching Chart: Andri Rondon fanned eight over four frames, allowing a run on five hits and a walk.....Fauris Guerrero (1-0, 5.73 ERA) recorded his first pro win with two scoreless innings, allowing a hit while fanning two. Jose Morel (5.76 ERA) gave up two runs in two innings and Wagner Disla (10.13) worked a scoreless ninth.

Phillies (27-36) blanked the Cubs (24-39) over the first seven innings and scored all the runs they needed in a three-run third.
Pitching Chart: Riger Fernandez (0-5, 7.22 ERA) gave up five runs over 4.2 innings on five hits and three walks. Tough first pro season for the 17-year-old left-hander with a 1.75 WHIP in 33.2 IP with 18 BB and 14 K in 11 starts......Moises Ramirez (2.18 ERA) tossed 3.1 scoreless frames and Jose Leidenz (3.54 ERA) allowed three runs in the ninth.
