Cubs July 31 Minors Recap

Paul Blackburn tossed seven shutout innings as Myrtle Beach edged Frederick 2-1. Eugene’s bats and arms led the Emeralds to victory while Iowa beat Nashville. A look at all the affiliates from Friday night.

Cubs trade three minor leaguers
In case you missed it, Cubs traded shortstop Elliot Soto and right-hander Ivan Pineyro to Florida for RHP Dan Haren. They also sent Junior Lake to Baltimore for reliever Tommy Hunter. Complete story

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 5, Nashville (A’s) 2
Iowa (56-50) pounded Nashville (46-61) pitching for 11 hits and beat the Sounds for the third time in the series.

In the Box: For the second straight night every starter had at least one hit......C Luke Carlin (.161) and LF John Andreoli (.278) had two hits each and CF Rubi Silva (.279) delivered a two-run triple in the first....SS Javier Baez (.306) went 1-for-3, scored twice, knocked in a run and stole his 10th base.....CF Matt Szczur (.297) extended his hitting streak to 11-games, going 1-for-5 with a run.....1B Mike Olt (.288) upped his hit streak to 10 games with a RBI single.

Pitching Chart: Drake Britton (7-5, 4.85 ERA) got the win, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings despite walking seven.... Carl Edwards Jr. got the final out of the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh for his 5th hold.....LH Ryan Buchter (1.56 ERA) fanned two in the 8th and Brian Schlitter (1.14 ERA) worked the ninth for his 14th save.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa heads to Colorado Springs for a four-game series and send Tsuyoshi Wada (2-4, 3.11 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night.

Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 7, Tennessee 4
Montgomery’s Jamie Schultz no-hit Tennessee for six innings and the Biscuits hung on for the win.

In the Box: Smokies were no-hit for six frames and then scored three times in the 7th. Bijan Rademacher led off with a walk and took third on a Willson Contreras single, the first hit of the game. Jeimer Candelario delivered another base hit scoring Rademacher, and Stephen Bruno plated Contreras on a groundout. Wes Darvill’s single brought home Candelario but Darvill was thrown out at second to end the inning. The Smokies added a run in the 9th when Contreras walked, took third on a single from Billy McKinney and scored on Candelario’s force out.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams (5-2, 3.33 ERA) threw 70 pitches over five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. The right-hander recorded 10 ground ball outs, fanned one, and didn’t walk anyone. Williams has allowed 21 hits and 11 runs over his last 15 innings......Juan Paniagua (4.05 ERA) fanned three in two shutout innings and Andres Santiago (4.53 ERA) gave up two runs in the 8th.

Smokies News: The Cubs released RHP Zach Cates, who was acquired from the Padres in the Anthony Rizzo trade. Cates appeared in 26 games this year between Myrtle Beach and Tennessee, 4-5, 3.44 ERA, 36.2 IP, 33 BB, 35 K.....The Smokies activated RHP Matt Brazis from the disabled list. Brazis made four rehab appearances in Mesa before rejoining the Smokies. Acquired from the Mariners for Justin Ruggiano in the off-season, the 25-year-old went on the DL back in April.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 2, Frederick (Orioles) 1
Paul Blackburn tossed seven shutout frames and Myrtle Beach (62-43) made the most of their scoring opportunities to beat Frederick (49-57) in the opening game of the series.

In the Box: 2B Chesny Young (.338) scored both runs and C Victor Caratini got credit for both RBI. Young reached on an error in the fourth, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Caratini’s RBI single. Young double in the 6th and crossed home when the third baseman couldn’t field Caratini’s run-scoring single. DH Jordan Hankins (.192) doubled and SS Carlos Penalver is staring to get his swing back after a recent slump, adding a single and is 4-for-10 in last three games.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn (5-4, 3.42 ERA) scattered seven hits and two walks in seven shutout innings. The right-hander fanned three and was aided by three double plays in his 78-pitch outing. Blackburn coaxed 10 ground ball outs and had a game score of 64. Since coming back from the DL in early July, Blackburn has surrendered one run in 20 innings....Josh Conway (3.23 ERA) struckout the side in the 8th but allowed a run on two hits. Jasvir Rakkar worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save.

Pelicans News: Brad Markey (3-0, 0.76 ERA) looks to continue his impressive start in the Carolina League as he takes the mound Saturday night in Frederick.

Midwest League—Low A—Dayton (Reds) 6, South Bend 1
South Bend (45-57) collected eight hits but Dayton (56-49) took the series opener.

In the Box: South Bend was 0-for-9 with RISP and their only run of the night came on a solo homer from RF Jeffrey Baez (.238), his 7th and sixth in July......3B Jesse Hodges (.251) ripped a pair of doubles while DH Ian Happ (.273) and C Gioskar Amaya (.264) both went 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching Chart: James Norwood (0-1, 6.32 ERA) made his second start since coming off the DL and pitched into the fourth. Norwood didn’t miss many bats, allowing six runs on six hits, including a homer. He issued two walks and fanned two.....Tyler Ihrig (2.70 ERA) fanned four in 2.1 shutout frames while Daniel Lewis (3.42 ERA) and Corbin Hoffner (0.68 ERA) each tossed a scoreless inning.

Eugene (21-22) ripped eight doubles and pounded the Spokane (20-23) picking staff for 16 hits in the win, the Ems third straight.

In the Box: Every starter had at least one hit as the Ems offense had a feast on Spokane pitching.....LF Ricardo Marcano (.269) led the hit parade with two doubles and two RBI while CF Donnie Dewees (.248) added three singles and a RBI. C Tyler Alamo (.284) delivered two hits and scored twice, SS Andrew Ely (.400) ripped two doubles, and 1B Blake Headley (.244) had two doubles and knocked in a run. DH Ian Rice (.257), 2B Frandy Delarosa (.261) and 3B Adonis Paula (.233) all drove in runs.

Pitching Chart: Tossing five shutout frames in his second straight start, Carson Sands (4.36 ERA) blanked the Indians on four hits and walk. The left-hander fanned four, got seven ground ball outs and finished with a game score of 62......Tanner Griggs (14.21 ERA) worked two shutout frames, allowing a single and two walks with a strikeout......Jared Cheek fanned two in the 8th and got the final three outs to complete the shutout.

Emeralds Notes: Kyle Miller (0-0, 6.00 ERA) is expected to make his first pro start on Saturday night in Spokane.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 3, Yankees II 1
Four Cubs (31-22) pitchers held the Yankees (30-23) to a run on just three hits.

In the Box: 3B Rafael Mejia (.275) went 2-for-4 with a run as the Cubs only collected five hits. 2B Edgar Rondon (.333) singled and knocked in a run while C Raymond Pena (.089) added a RBI. LF Yovanny Cuevas (.255) and Chris Pieters (.315) were both 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (4.29 ERA) got the start and went three innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits and a walk with three punchouts.....Wander Cabrera (3-2, 1.73 ERA) got credit for the win, tossing four shutout frames with five strikeouts. Sucre Valdez earned his first hold with a scoreless 8th and Assael Aquino fanned two in the 9th for his first save.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 6, Tigers 3
Cubs (26-39) made it two-in-a-row beating the second-place Tigers (36-29).

In the Box: Cubs had eight hits but nobody had more than one. LF Luis Ayala (.278) and 3B Rafael Narea (.223) both scored twice while CF Jose Gonzalez (.246) added two RBI to bring his league-leading total to 43. DH Gustavo Polanco (.264) and Narea both drove in runs.

Pitching Chart: Gabriel Lima continues to be the Cubs top arm in the VSL as the 19-year-old improved to 4-2 (1.36 ERA) with six shutout innings. The right-hander allowed six hits, walked one, fanned two, and had a game score of 61.....Omar Ventura (9.82 ERA) pitched to three batters in the 7th but they all reached, two scoring....Jose Leidenz (3.47 ERA) earned his second save, giving up a run over three innings.
