Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 13, Colorado Springs (Brewers) 6
Iowa (57-50) jumped out to an 11-0 lead and beat Colorado Springs (43-62) for the second straight night.
In the Box: SS Javier Baez knocked in five runs on three hits and scored twice as the I-Cubs pounded Sky Sox pitching for 18 hits.....John Andreoli scored three times and collected three hits, including a homer to leadoff the game.....Christian Villanueva went 3-for-6 with two RBI while Rubi Silva had two doubles and knocked in four. Matt Szczur extended his hit streak to 12 games and Mike Olt upped hit streak to 11 games.
Pitching Chart: Tsuyoshi Wada (2-4, 3.11 ERA) made his fifth AAA start since coming off the DL in early July. With the acquisition of Dan Haren, Wada can continue to fine tune his game and is one of the top options to return to Wrigley if needed. On Saturday night, Wada threw 87 pitches, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks. He fanned four and had a game score of 36.....Armando Rivero gave up a run in 1.2 frames and Joseph Ortiz (1.1 IP) allowed two runs in the 9th.
I-Cubs Notes: Chicago will recall LHP Clayton Richard, who gets the start Sunday in Milwaukee......RHP Yoervis Medina will be option to Iowa to make room for RHP Dan Haren......OF Mike Baxter has cleared waivers and been assigned to Iowa.....2B Tommy LaStella is expected to continue his rehab for Iowa on Sunday. LaStella played one game at Tennessee on July 29 (1-for-2) and experienced some soreness in the oblique that’s had him on the shelf since early April.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Montgomery (Rays) 4
Jeimer Candelario’s first AA homer gave Tennessee (15.19, 54-49) the win over Montgomery (20-14, 54-48).
In the Box: Trailing 4-3 in the fifth, 3B Jeimer Candelario ripped his first AA homer, a two-run shot. The 21-year-old went 3-for-5 and his hitting .326 in 12 games since being promoted.....LF Bijan Rademacher (.245) gave Smokies a 1-0 lead with a first-inning long ball, his 4th of the season. C Willson Contreras (.322) had three hits and drove in a run while CF Albert Almora (.241) doubled and knocked in a run. DH Jacob Hannemann (.227) and SS Ryan Dent (.209) had two hits each as every starter collected at least one base knock.
Pitching Chart: Jeffry Antigua (4-3, 3.81 WRA) made his 9th AA start and 15th overall on Saturday night. The soft-tossing left-hander worked six innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks. He threw 91 pitches and fanned five.....Corey Black (4.17 ERA) fanned four in two shutout frames for his 5th hold and P.J. Francescon (0.89 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 9th for his 16th save.
Smokies News: Tennessee returns home on Sunday but a starter hasn’t been named. The Cubs will send C Miguel Montero to Tennessee to begin his rehab stint with the Smokies. Montero has been cleared to play after going on the DL with a sprained left thumb on July 17.
Carolina League—High A—Frederick (Orioles) 4, Myrtle Beach 3
A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 8th forced in the winning run as Frederick (50-57, 18-19) snapped Myrtle Beach’s (21-16, 62-44) six-game win streak
In the Box: All of Myrtle Beach’s runs came on one swing of the bat by RF Mark Zagunis (.274), who smacked his 6th homer, a three-run shot in the 8th. CF Trey Martin (.242) collected two hits while 2B Daniel Lockhart (.228) and LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.275) both singled and scored.
Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (0.91 ERA) blanked the Keys through the first four innings but has hit scoreless streak stopped at 15 frames when they scored in the fifth, the only run he allowed. The right-hander finished with aline of 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 B, 1 K.......Fernando Cruz (3.78 ERA) gave up back-to-back homer in the 7th......A passed ball on a strikeout came back to haunt the Pelicans as James Farris (0-3, 6.14 ERA) allowed a hit and then walked in the go-ahead run. David Berg got the final out of the 8th.
Pelicans News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-6, 3.48 ERA) gets the ball on Sunday in the series final at Fredrick.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Dayton (Reds) 4
A throwing error on a potential game-ending double play gave South Bend the win over Dayton.
In the Box: RF Jeffrey Baez (.249) went 4-for-5 but his slide into second in the top of the ninth prevented a double play, caused an errant throw and allowed two runs to score giving the SB-Cubs the 5-4 win......Gleyber Torres (.309) knocked in two runs with a triple and got credit for the first run on the double play ball in 9th. C Erick Castillo (.292) collected two singles while 3B Jesse Hodges (.251) and 1B Gioskar Amaya (.264) both knocked in runs.
Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (4.78 ERA) went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits in his 17th start. He fanned five, had a game score of 59, and it was his second straight start without a walk (12.2 IP)....... Ryan McNeil (4.11 ERA) worked a scoreless 7th but after an error gave up a two-run homer as the Dragons took the lead. Dillon Maples )2.76 ERA) got two outs in the ninth but after two walks, Corbin Hoffner (0.66 ERA) got the call for the final out and earned his fifth save.
SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges (5-7, 4.00 ERA) makes his 18th start Sunday in Dayton.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Spokane (Rangers) 4, Eugene 0
Three Spokane (21-23) pitchers blanked Eugene (21-23) to end the Emeralds three-game win streak over the indians.
Pitching Chart: Kyle Miller (0-1, 7.20 ERA) made his first professional start and after a scoreless first, gave up two runs in the second, his last inning.....Casey Bloomquist (0.00 ERA) fanned two over two scoreless frames, allowing just a single.....All-Star Pedro Araujo (3.06 ERA) worked three innings and got tagged for two runs on six hits.....Jae-Hoon Ha pitched a scoreless ninth despite allowing three hits.
Emeralds Notes: Oscar De La Cruz (3-2, 3.13 ERA) gets the start on Sunday, the final game before the All-Star break.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs (2-2, 17-15) had the day off and are back in action Sunday when they face the Giants (2-2, 16-16). Cubs finished one-game back in the AZL East Division behind first-half champs Angels. The Cubs have 23 games left and season ends Aug. 29. 19-year-old Jesus Camargo, signed as free agent out of Mexico during the off-season, is second in the AZL with a 0.96 WHIP. The 5-foot-11 right-hander has thrown 26 innings with 6 BB, 28 K, and a BAA of .207.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 11, Yankees II 8
Cubs (32-22) used a seven-run sixth to beat the Yankees (30-24)
In the Box: DH Tony Rijo (.225) went 3-for-3 with a RBI while 3B Rafael Mejia (.276) knocked in three runs. SS Edgar Rondon (.345) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and 1B Chris Pieters (.320) had two hits, scored twice and plated a pair. CF Samir Lara (.310) added two singled and scored twice.
Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada (1.54 ERA) tossed three innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts...Pablo Ochoa (3.00 ERA) surrendered five unearned runs in 1.2 innings while Julian Aybar (2.33 ERA) improved to 7-1 with four strikeouts in 2.1 scoreless innings. Jose Morel (6.58 ERA) yielded three runs, two coming on a homer, and Aneuris Rosario (0.68 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save.
Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 6, Tigers 5
Cubs (27-39) used a bases load walk and a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th for the walk-off win over the Tigers (36-30).
In the Box: C Daniel Diaz (.152) drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game in the 9th and then a wild pitch allowed 3B Ronaldo Lopez (.169) to score from third with the winning run. 1B Jose Rojas (.257) went 2-for-3 with a run scored while 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.312), CF Jose Gonzalez (.244) and LF Luis Hidalgo (.145) all plated runs.
Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (2-4, 4.76 ERA) made his ninth start and went four innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk....Harrinson Bermudez fired four perfect innings with one strikeout....Moises Ramirez (3-3, 2.14 ERA) allowed two hits in a scoreless ninth and got the win.
