Cubs prospects earn player of week honors
Tennessee’s Willson Contreras, Myrtle Beach’s Jonathan Martinez and Eugene’s Adbert Alzolay were all named minor league players of the week for their respective leagues.
Contreras was named the Southern League Player of the Week after hitting .478/.556/.739 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, 3 2B, 7 R and 4 BB. In 93 games in AA, the 23-year-old Venezuelan is hitting .324/.406/.482 with 6 HR and 52 RBI.
Martinez earned Carolina League honors with eight shutout innings against Potomac on July 28, allowing three hits while striking out four. The Pelicans top arm this season has made 17 starts, compiling a 7-2 record with a 3.10 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 93 IP.
The Northwest League tabbed Alzolay their top arm for the week as the 20-year-old right-hander worked six innings of no-hit ball at Spokane on July 30. In seven games this year, two starts, the Venezuelan is 2-2 with a 1.04 ERA in 26 IP and a 0.85 WHIP.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 12, Colorado Springs (Brewers) 10
After scoring six times in the 8th for a 8-7 lead, Iowa (59-50) needed four more runs in the 9th to beat Colorado Springs (43-64).
In the Box: SS Javier Baez (.318) delivered a bases-clearing double in the ninth to put Iowa ahead for good, capping a second comeback of the night. Baez was a homer shy of the cycle, finishing 3-for-6 with 3 RBI.....Trailing 7-2 after seven innings, Iowa scored six times in the 8th, three coming on CF John Andreoli’s bases loaded triple. An error, a bases loaded walk to PH Mike Baxter and a RBI single from LC Adorn Chambers (.264) plated the other three runs......Rubi Silva had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored twice while Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino (2-6, 4.56 ERA) got the start and lasted six innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks.....Zac Rosscup struggled in his second straight AAA outing, only retiring two hitters in the seventh while allowing three runs on four hits, including a homer. Frank Batista recorded the final out of the 7th, stranding a pair of inherited runners......After the Cubs got the lad in the 8th, Joseph Ortiz handed it right back to the Sky Sox, yielding three runs on four hits in the 8th. Ortiz got credit for the win...... Carl Edwards Jr. worked the 9th for his second save with a walk and a strikeout.
I-Cubs Notes: Cubs will be looking for the sweep on Tuesday night as they send Carol Pimentel (7-5, 3.28 ERA) to the mound.
Southern League—AA—Birmingham (White Sox) 4, Tennessee 2
Birmingham (58-47) used a three-run 7th to beat Tennessee (55-50).
In the Box: 2B Tommy La Stella played his second straight game, reaching base all three times with a pair of singles and a walk. La Stella has been on the DL since hurting his oblique back in April.......C Willson Contreras started work on another player of the week award with two hits and a RBI to up his average to .326.....C Miguel Montero was the designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his second rehab game......RF Billy McKinney (.278) extended his hit streak to seven games with a single.....Jeimer Candelario (.340) continues to square up baseballs in AA as the 21-year-old singled, doubled and scored once. He leads all Cubs minor leaguers with 27 doubles.
Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson (1.65 ERA) recorded his fourth straight quality start, limiting the Barons to a solo homer over six innings. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked two and fanned three in his 91-pitch outing.....Juan Paniagua (0-1, 7.04 ERA) gave up three runs on two hits and two walks in the 7th.....Felix Pena (4.15 ERA) fanned four as he retied all six hitters he faced in his second straight relief appearance.
Smokies News: Rob Zastryzny (0-3, 4.64 ERA) is still looking for his first AA win as he gets the start Tuesday night against Birmingham.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach
Pelicans have the day off and get back to work on Tuesday night when they host Wilmington. Jonathan Martinez (7-2, 3.10 ERA) is listed as the starting pitcher but Jen-Ho Tseng, who was scheduled to start on Sunday but was “under the weather” could be on the mound.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend
South Bend had Monday off and start a six-game home stand on Tuesday night with three games with Kane County and three more with Clinton.
Eugene is on their all-star break. OF Eloy Jimenez, RHP Oscar De La Cruz , and RHP Pedro Araujo will represent the Emeralds when the Northwest League takes on the Pioneer League in Spokane on Tuesday night. Jimenez is nursing an injury and will not play and De La Cruz pitched Sunday night and is not expected to see any action.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 5 Giants 1
Despite collecting 10 hits, the Giants (17-18) couldn’t beat the Cubs (19-15).
In the Box: 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.270) went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run as the Cubs had seven base knocks in the win. RF Michael Foster (.327) tripled and plated a run while Carols Jimenez (.175) singled in a run. Benjamin Carhart went 1-for-4 in his second rehab game, his first behind the plate.
Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch threw what could be his final tune-up before returning to AAA Iowa. The left-hander worked four innings, surrendering a run on six hits with a strikeout....Jesus Camargo (3-0, 2.17 ERA) continues to impress on the mound in the AZL as the 19-year-old tossed three innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts. He fanned five and lowered his WHIP to 0.90......Jesus Castillo, acquired from the D-Backs for Tony Campana two years ago, blanked the Giants the final two innings on three hits.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Mets II, 1
Junior Marte fanned eight in five one-hit innings to lead Cubs (33-22) over Mets (33-22).
In the Box: SS Yeiler Peguero (.287) broke out of a slump since taking MVP honors at the all-star game, collecting two hits while scoring once. The 17-year-old was hitting .158 (6-38) over his last 10 games entering play on Monday.....C Raymond Pena (.103) ripped two singles, one plating a run, while CF Samir Lara (.302) doubled home a run....2B Edgar Rondon tripled and scored, upping his average to .347 in his first pro season.
Pitching Chart: Junior Marte (4-1, 1.29 ERA) faced one over the minimum in five innings, surrendering a leadoff double in the fourth. The 20-year-old right hander fanned eight and complied a game score of 73. Marte has been the Cubs best arm in the DSL....Sucre Valdez (3.44 ERA) held the Mets scoreless for 1.2 innings and Luis Aquino (0.56 ERA) earned his third save, despite allowing a run in the ninth.
Venezuelan Summer League—Phillies 9, Cubs 5
Phillies (29-38) broke the game open with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to beat the Cubs (27-40).
In the Box: DH Gustavo Polanco (.279) paced the offense with four hits, including his 10th double, and drove in his 19th run. The 18-year-old has caught 26 games in his first pro season.....2B Ronaldo Lopez (.186) had two hits and scored twice while 1B Fidel Matos (.252) knocked in a pair of runs with two singles. LF Jose Rojas (.255) plated his 38th run of the season with a sacrifice fly.
Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus only lasted three innings, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks. The 17-year-old is taking his lumps in his first season (0-3, 9.51 ERA, 10 G)........ Surrendering two runs in the sixth, Alex Pacheco (4.86 ERA) fell to 1-4 as the Phillies collected three hits and a walk off the 20-year-old lefty in 2.1 innings.....Bryan Molina (7.96 ERA) gave up two runs in the seventh and Eugenio Palma (2.03 ERA) worked 1.2 frames of no-hit relief with three strikeouts.
