Cubs Aug. 7 Minors Recap

Dallas Beeler, Billy McKinney, Ben Carhart and Ian Happ (pictured) all helped their teams to wins on Friday night as the Cubs affiliates piled up the victories.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Omaha (Royals) 0
Dallas Beeler and Blake Cooper combined for a two-hit shutout as Iowa (61-51) beat Omaha (63-50).

In the Box: Iowa scored all their runs in the sixth as CF John Andreoli (.282) and LF Adron Chambers (.267) plated the first two runs with RBI singles. SS Javier Baez (.293) knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice grounder and after Baez swiped two bases, 3B Christian Villanueva (.273) stroked a RBI single......Rubi Silva had his 10-game hit streak come to an end going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.

Pitching Chart: Dallas Beeler (4-5, 5.49 ERA) turned in his best outing of the year, blanking the Storm Chasers for seven innings on two hits. Beeler fanned three, walked one and recorded 11 ground ball outs. He threw 97 pitches, 66 for strikes, and delivered a game score of 75....Blake Cooper retired all six hitters he faced, setting three down on strikes.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs will send Felipe Paulino (2-6, 4.56 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night and Carlos Pimentel (8-5, 3.25 ERA) is scheduled to get the start on Sunday in the series final at Principal Park........Catching up on some roster moves....C Tayler Teagarden accepted his assignment to Iowa and IF Jonathan Mota was sent to Tennessee to make room on the roster......LHP Tsuyoshi Wada has ended his rehab assignment and been added to Iowa’s 25-man roster.....Relief pitcher Yoervis Medina was also optioned from Chicago and is now on the Iowa roster.....OF Matt Szczur is on his way back to Iowa after the Cubs activated Miguel Montero from the DL on Friday......Clayton Richard opted to become a free agent after the Cubs designated him for assignment but he resigned with the Cubs and is currently on Chicago’s 25-man roster.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Jackson (Mariners) 6
Billy McKinney’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave Tennessee (19-21, 58-51) the win over Jackson (13-27, 42-66).

In the Box: Billy McKinney’s single in the ninth scored Willson Contreras, who led off the inning with a double. Contreras extended his hitting streak to 11 games, going 3-for-5 and scored twice. The Smokies catcher is the hottest hitter on the planet and now leads the SL with a .342 average. He’s second in the league in hits (120) and OBP (.418), second in total bases (174) and third in doubles (28)....McKinney (.276) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while CF Albert Almora (.253) continues to square up baseballs, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored......Jeimer Candelario (.333) upped his hit streak to 12 games with a single while Tommy La Stella played third and went 0-for-4 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Andres Santiago (2-4, 3.99 ERA) was staked to a 5-0 first inning lead but couldn’t hold it, allowing five runs over 5.1 innings.......Juan Paniagua (6.48 ERA) didn’t help, allowing both inherited runners to score before getting the final two outs of the sixth.....Corey Black (4.11 ERA) fanned four over two no-hit frames and Starling Peralta (1-1, 2.52 ERA) threw a scoreless ninth to earn the win, his first in AA.

Smokies News: Pierce Johnson (5-0, 1.65 ERA) gets the start Saturday night against the Generals......Smokies have added Jonathan Mota to the roster after he was assigned from Iowa. It marks the seventh straight season Mota has worn a Smokies uniform.....

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Frederick (Orioles) 4
Myrtle Beach (25-17, 66-45) won its fourth straight and ninth in a row at home beating Frederick (21-21, 53-59) in the series opener.

In the Box: DH Benjamin Carhart came up big in his first game back with three hits, including his 3rd homer. He also doubled, ended up with two RBI and scored twice.....SS Carlos Penalver (.218) smoked a line shot over the left field wall in the 4th and added a RBI single in the 5th. He also walked and scored twice......RF Mark Zagunis (.275) was hit in the head by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth and was taken out of the game as a precautionary measure.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (2-1, 4.13 ERA) worked into the sixth and earned the win after retiring the first 13 hitters of the game. The right-hander surrendered three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. He had a game score of 55 in his 88-pitch outing......James Farris gave up a run over 2.1 frames and David Berg worked around two hits in a scoreless ninth.

Pelicans News: Paul Blackburn (5-4, 3.42 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball on Saturday night and the red-hot Brad Markey (3-0, 0.91 ERA) gets the start on Sunday against Frederick.....Benjamin Carhart has been taken off the DL and is back in a Pelicans uniform. Carhart played in four games in Mesa during his rehab, going 5-for-15 with two doubles and three RBI.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Clinton (Mariners) 1
Ian Happ smacked his first MWL homer to help South Bend (20-21, 49-59) beat Clinton (8-33, 34-76).

In the Box: Cubs first-round pick CF Ian Happ (.250) launched his first homer for South Bend, a two-run shot from the right-side of the plate in the second.....Jeffrey Baez (.268) had two hits and scored twice while SS Gleyber Torres (.307) ripped his 21st double, knocked in his 50th run and swiped his 20th base. Baez recorded his 15th assist, throwing out a runner at home in the 7th.

Pitching Chart: James Norwood (1-1, 4.79 ERA) tossed a career-high five scoreless innings and earned his first win as a pro. Holding the L-Kings to three hits and a walk, the 21-year-old fanned four and finished with a game score of 64......Dillon Maples (4.24 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 sixth but walked a pair in the seventh and left with bases loaded after two outs....Corbin Hoffner (0.50 ERA) allowed one of the three runners to score in the 7th and then tossed two shutout frames for his 6th save.

SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (4-4, 4.79 ERA) faces the Lumberkings on Saturday night.....3B Jesse Hodges was placed on the 7-day DL after leaving Thursday night’s game with a knee injury......Charcer Burks was activated from the disabled list and Yasiel Balaguert has been put on the DL.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Salem-Keizer (Giants) 8, Eugene 1
Salem-Keizer (7-2, 27-20) used a seven-run eighth to put away Eugene (4-5, 21-26) for the second straight night.

In the Box: LF Alex Bautista’s RBI single gave the Ems a 1-0 lead in the second. Eugene added a run in the 8th on a RBI double by 3B Blake Headley (.255). SS Andrew Ely (.361) and C Ian Rice (.268) both had two hits while 1B Matt Rose (.254) played in his first game since July 29.

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (1-4, 4.66 ERA) matched his career-high with six innings, allowing two runs in the sixth on a two-run homer......Tanner Griggs (12.91 ERA) made his sixth appearance and worked a scoreless 7th but was the first of three arms to pitch in the 8th. Griggs hit the leadoff hitter and after a strikeout, turned the inning over to Jared Cheek (7.84 ERA). The right-hander could only retire one hitter as he let the inherited runner score and got charged with six more runs on four hits and two walks....Trey Masek 5.23 ERA) got the final out but not before allowing two inherited runners to score on two hits and a walk......Scott Frazier (4.50 ERA) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Oscar De La Cruz (3-2, 2.72 ERA) is scheduled to make his ninth start on Saturday night against the Volcanoes.

Game was rained out.

Dominican Summer League—Rangers II 2, Cubs 1
Rangers (27-32) beat the Cubs (36-23) with a walk-off single in the 10th.

In the Box: Cubs only run scored in the 7th when they drew four walks, the last coming to SS Yeiler Peguero (.299) that forced in 2B Edgar Rondon (.344). DH Yovanny Cuevas (.259) and RF Jose Jules (.138) had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Pablo Ochoa (2.66 ERA) one-hit the Rangers for five innings, issuing three walks with three strikeouts......Jesus Tejada (1.64 ERA) gave up a run over three innings....Jose Morel (2-3, 6.59 ERA) was tagged with the loss, getting charged with the winning run, after Aneuris Rosario (1.72 ERA) allowed the game-wining single with two outs in the 10th.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 12, Rays 6
Cubs (30-40) won for the sixth time in seven games beating the first-place Rays (42-28).

In the Box: 2B Jhonny Bethencourt went 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBI. The 18-year-old is now second in the VSL batting race with a .319 average, four points behind Rays catcher Rene Pinto, who went 3-for-3.....1B Gustavo Polanco (.282) is ending the season on fire as the 18-year-old was 3-for-5 and is 20-for-his-last-40....DH Luis Hidalgo (.179), C Daniel Diaz (.160) and 3B Henrry Pedra (.209) all had two hits and the trio combined for seven runs at the bottom of the order.

Pitching Chart: Freddy Tineo (0-4, 5.70 ERA) worked 3.2 innings but got tagged for five runs on eight hits and a walk. The 17-year-old made 12 starts and had his best outing July 8 with five shutout innings....Omar Ventura (8.31 ERA) worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while Harrison Bermudez (3.72 ERA) gave up a run sixth. Jose Leidenz (3-0, 3.08 ERA) tossed two shutout innings to earn the win and Juan Rengifo (1.77 ERA) threw a scoreless ninth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs play their final game of the season on Saturday against the Rays.
