Cubs Aug. 10 Minors Recap

Albert Almora made it six straight multi-hit games on Monday night to help Tennessee to its 4th straight win. The Smokies Ryan Williams continues to impress on the mound while Eugene’s Preston Morrison and Mesa’s Dylan Cease won their first games as a pro. More awards for Cubs prospects and an update on the pennant races.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa
The I-Cubs enjoyed Monday oaf and return to the diamond on Tuesday night to begin a four-game series at home with Nashville as Tsuyoshi Wada (3-4, 3.84 ERA) get the start. Iowa (64-51) trails Oklahoma City by four games.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Jackson (Mariners) 5
Tennessee (61-51) made it four straight over Jackson (42-69) behind another strong outing from Ryan Williams.

In the Box: DH Billy McKinney (.284) had two hits on the night and took a low fastball and lined it over the right-field wall for a two-run homer in the first. It was his third in AA and 7th overall......CF Albert Almora (.264) ran his hit streak to 7-games and was 2-for-4 for his sixth straight multi-hit game. ....C Willson Contreras (.343) upped his hit streak to 14 games with two hits, one a RBI single in the first.....3B Jeimer Candelario (.338) now has a 15-game hitting streak with a RBI triple in the 6th. He’s also played 47 straight games without an error...2B Tommy La Stella (.250) went 0-for-4 in his sixth rehab game.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams (7-2, 2.70 ERA) made his 19th start, 11th in AA, and entered the game with 111 innings under his belt in his first full season. The Cubs 10th round pick last June from East Carolina retired the first 11 hitters he faced before a double ended the streak. It was the only base runner Williams allowed, working six scoreless frames. He fanned five, recorded 11 ground ball outs, only needed 65 pitches (44 strikes), and had a game score of 75......Fernando Cruz (6.17 ERA) didn’t have the same success. A walk and three hits plated three runs and cut the lead in half. Cruz got two outs before leaving with a runner on second.....Matt Brazis got the final out of the 7th on strikes and then got the first two out of the 8th but after two runners reached, P.J. Francescon got the call. The right-hander got the final out of the 8th and the earned his league-leading 18th save, despite allowing a two-run homer.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach
Pelicans had Monday off and head to Salem for three games starting Tuesday. Already with the first half title, Myrtle Beach (26-18) finds themselves 2.5 games behind first-place Winston-Salem in the second half race. Jonathan Martinez (8-2, 3.00 ERA) makes his 19th start on Tuesday night against the Red Sox. Chesny Young had a 40-point lead in the batting race with his .333 average.

South Bend’s Erick Leal named MWL Pitcher of the Week
South Bend’s Erick Leal has been named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 3-9 after the right-hander tossed nine no-hit innings Aug. 4 vs. Kane County. He fanned four in the gem, allowing a walk in the 87-pitch outing. The Venezuelan set a new career-high throwing nine innings but the Cubs lost the game 1-0 in 12 innings. Leal has made 18 starts for South Bend, posting a 7-7 record with a 4.12 ERA. He’s tossed 102.2 innings with 27 BB, 60 K, 1.34 WHIP and a .276 BAA. Leal commands a fastball in the low 90s, a sharp breaking curve, and a developing change-up........South Bend had Monday off and begin a three-game series in Beloit on Tuesday night. South Bend (21-22) is five games behind Fort Wayne (26-17) for the second half title.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 9, Boise (Rockies) 0
Four Eugene (7-5, 24-26) pitchers combined to blank Boise (3-9, 17-33) as the Emeralds stayed within a game of first place.

In the Box: Emeralds were able to take advantage of nine hits, five walks, two errors, three wild pitches and a passed ball in the win.....3B Adonis Paula (.264) led the attack with three hits, including a RBI single in the ninth.....CF Donnie Dewees (.241) went 2-for-5 and scored three times while SS Andrew Ely (.340) delivered a two-run single in the 8th and scored three runs.....3B Blake Headley (.236) knocked in a pair while 2B Frandy Delarosa (.259) was 2-for-5 and drove in the Ems first run with a double.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey (0-0, 2.25 ERA) worked a career-high three innings, blanking the Hawks on two hits and a walk. He fanned one and recorded five ground ball outs. Game score 55.....Preston Morrison (1-1, 0.84 ERA) only needed six pitches to retire Boise in the 4th and then tossed two more shutout innings for his first win as a pro. Morrison fanned four and gave up two hits and a walk.....Jae-Hoon Ha (2.08 ERA) pitched two shutout frames and Scott Effross pitched the ninth, fanning two in his NWL debut.

Emeralds Notes: Casey Bloomquist (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to make his second pro start on Tuesday night in Boise.........Eugene recently added RHP Scott Effross and RHP Luis Hernandez from Mesa. RHP Tanner Griggs and RHP Jared Cheek were assigned to the AZL.

Cubs used eight pitchers to blank the Padres.

In the Box: DH Robert Garcia (.359) is having himself a year in Mesa. The 21-year-old switch-hitter went 3-for-4 with a triple, knocked in three runs and scored twice, swiping his 16th base.....CF Darryl Wilson has collected a hit in 7-of-9 games as the Cubs 4th round pick went 2-for-4 with a RBI and his third stolen base......LF Donie Cimino went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Carlos Sepulveda added a sacrifice fly.

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina saw his first action since June 25 and didn’t make it out of the first inning before reaching his pitch limit. He gave up two hits and two walks but a caught stealing kept the Padres off the board. Skulina made 12 starts for Myrtle Beach (2-4, 62 IP, 3.05 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) before landing on the DL......John Williamson came in with the bases loaded and recorded a strikeout to get the Cubs out of the first inning jam.....19-year-old Dylan Cease earned his first win as a pro as the hard-throwing right-hander fanned three in two innings of work.....Carlos Rodriguez and M. T. Minacci worked two scoreless frames. Ariel Ovando retired both hitters he faced in the 8th and Michael Knighton got the final out of the 8th on strikes.....Jordan Brink worked around two hits in the ninth in his second game in the AZL.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 6, Braves 5
Cubs (38-23) took a 6-0 lead and survived a five-run eighth to beat the Braves (31-30).

In the Box: CF Yovanny Cuevas (.263) slugged a solo homer to lead off the first and added a RBI double. 2B Edgar Rondon (.345) had two hits and knocked in a pair while DH Jose Jules (.169) collected three singles.

Pitching Chart: Andri Rondon (3-2, 2.68 ERA) fanned a career-high nine hitters and held the Braves to just one hit and a walk in five shutout innings. The 19-year-old has 58 K in 47 IP in 12 appearances. Game score of 73......Luis Aquino (0.97 ERA) threw two scoreless frames but Jose Morel (8.13 ERA) could only get one out in the eighth as a three-run homer chased him from the game....Aneuris Rosario (1.56 ERA) got the final five outs for his ninth save.

Cubs Notes: Cubs moved to within 2.5 games of Red Sox II and face the Braves on Tuesday.

Three Cubs players ended the season as league-leaders. OF Jose Gonzalez led the circuit with 45 RBI, OF Luis Ayala had a VSL-high 25 stolen bases, and 2B Jhonny Bethencourt scored a league-high 49 runs. Relief pitcher Juan Rengifo was second with 11 saves. The Rays (42-28) and Tigers (38-32) are playing a best-of-three series for the league championship. The Tigers took the opener 7-1 as SS Moises Bello hit a grand slam.
