Pacific Coast League—AAA—Nashville (A’s) 8, Iowa 4
Tommy La Stella blasted a three-run homer in his I-Cubs debut but it wasn’t enough as Iowa (65-52) fell to Nashville (54-65).
In the Box: In his first at-bat with the I-Cubs, Tommy La Stella ripped a three-run homer in the second and added a single in the sixth......CF Matt Szczur (.300) extended his hit streak to 14 games with a double and a single........SS Javier Baez went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly as Iowa only had five hits.
Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch (3-3, 4.79 ERA) ended his two-month stay on the DL as he returned to the mound at Principal Park. The left-hander threw 71 pitches in four innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, one a homer.....Drake Britton (7-7, 5.50 ERA) allowed the go-ahead run in the sixth and then surrendered a three-run homer in the 7th.....Zac Rosscup and Yoervis Medina both tossed 1-2-3 frames.
I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (3-6, 4.17 ERA) is scheduled for the series finale on Friday night.
Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 4, Tennessee 3
Pierce Johnson suffered his first loss of the season as Chattanooga (63-50) beat Tennessee (62-53) to even the series.
In the Box: Billy McKinney left the game after fouling a ball off his knee in top top of the fourth. He finished the at-bat and scored CF Albert Almora (.270) with a RBI sacrifice fly but then left the game....Almora went 2-for-3 to extend his hit streak to 10 games and it was his eighth multi-hit game in his last nine.....LF Jacob Hannemann (.241) is having a good August as he picked up his sixth multi-hit game of the month with a pair of singles but made the final out of the game with the tying run on third.....Smokies 9th inning rally came up short after a pinch-hit RBI single by Jacob Rogers (.254) and a RBI fielder’s choice grounder by Wes Darvill (.174)
Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson (6-1, 1.70 ERA) threw a season-high 105 pitches as the righty went seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk. He fanned six, had a game score of 60, and suffered his first loss of season. It was his sixth straight quality start......Matt Brazis (1.50 ERA) allowed his first run in AA after a pair of hits in the 8th.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 9, Salem (Red Sox) 3
Myrtle Beach (67-47) used a five-run fourth to beat Salem (55-62) and left town with the series.
In the Box: Pelicans scored all the runs they would need in the fourth when C Cael Brockmeyer (.253) plated a pair of runs with a double. Back-to-back doubles by C Victor Caratini (.235) and LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.273) scored two more runs and CF Trey Martin (.241) capped off the frame with a RBI single.......3B Jason Vosler (.283) has found a power surge in the Carolina League as the 16th-round pick in 2014 swatted his 5th homer in his 19th game. He hit four bombs in 255 at-bats at South Bend before the promotion......RF Chesny Young (.332) cleared the bases in the ninth with his second single and was given credit for two RBI, the third run scoring on an error.
Pitching Chart: Daury Torrez (9-6, 3.98 ERA) tossed six innings of shutout ball before getting charged with two runs in the 7th as both hitters reached and scored. The right-hander allowed seven hits, fanned five, and had a game score of 55 in his 20th start of season.......Tyler Ihrig pitched his second straight game in relief, tossing two scoreless frames but did allow one inherited runner to score in the 7th.....David Berg (2.79 ERA) worked the ninth and gave up a run on three hits.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Beloit (A’s) 1
Ian Happ slugged his first career grand slam as South Bend (23-23, 52-61) beat Beloit (19-26, 45-70) to take the series.
In the Box: LF Ian Happ (.238) smacked a grand slam in the fifth and finished the night with a career-high five RBI, adding a sacrifice fly. 2B David Bote (.243) and CF Rashad Crawford (.283) were both on bases three times and scored twice with two hits and a walk. RF Jeffrey Baez (.273) went 1-4 and knocked in a run. SS Gleyber Torres (.306) singled, walked, scored a run, and stole his 22nd base.
Pitching Chart: Tommy Thorpe (4-5, 3.33 ERA) held the Snappers to just one run over 5.2 innings and won for the third time as a starter. The lefty gave up four hits, walked three and fanned five......Dillon Maples (3.72 ERA) got the final out of the sixth, fanned the side in the 7th, and worked a 1-2-3 eighth, retiring all seven hitters he faced. .....Daniel Lewis (3.10 ERA) pitched a scoreless ninth with walk and a strikeout.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Everett (Mariners) 7, Eugene 0
Two Everett (31-22) pitchers blanked Eugene (25-26) on three hits for their second straight win at PK Park.
Pitching Chart: Justin Steele made his first start since July 20 as the left-hander has been on the bench resting his arm. The 20-year-old fanned three in two scoreless frames with two hits and a walk.....Jose Paulino (1-6, 4.79 ERA) took the loss as the lefty allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over three innings.....Mark Malave didn’t have it as the right-hander walked three, gave up two hits, was charged with four runs, and left with the bases loaded....Scott Effross, Cubs 15th round pick ,allowed two inherited runners to score but then kept the Aqua Sox off the board for the final three innings in his second NWL contest..

Arizona Rookie League—Giants 3, Cubs 2
A solo homer in the top of the 8th allowed the Giants (10-5, 24-19) to beat the Cubs (8-5, 23-18) and move into first place.
In the Box: 3B P.J. Higgins (.317) provided all the offense for the Cubs as the 11th round pick smacked a two-run homer in the first inning, the second of his career......The Cubs tallied seven hits but no player had more than one hit and LF Daniel Spingola had the only other extra base hit, a double.
Pitching Chart: Heath Dwyer (4.25 ERA) made his first pro start and tossed three shutout innings. The non-drafted free agent from VCU allowed three hits, walked one and recorded two punchouts.......Third-round pick Bryan Hudson, the left-handed prep from Alton, Illinois, made his pro debut on Thursday night. Hudson retired the first hitter he faced on a ground out but then gave up a double and a single to put runners on the corners. An errant pickoff throw by Hudson allowed a run to score and move the other runner to third. Hudson then balked in the second run. After another ground out and a walk, Hudson was pulled.....Carlos Rodriguez (4.76 ERA) got the final out of the 4th in relief of Hudson and then tossed three more innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts....Santiago Rodriguez (0-1, 4.70 ERA) saw his first action since early July when he was promoted to South Bend and went on the DL. The right-hander gave up a solo homer in the 8th....Ariel Ovando (0.60 ERA) pitched a scoreless ninth.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 7, Tigers 2
Cubs (41-23) pounded out 13 hits and beat the Tigers (28-36) for their fifth straight win to pull within a game of the first-place Red Sox II (42-22).
In the Box: Every starter had at least one hit and six different Cubs knocked in runs. CF Jose Jules (.190), 3B Yeiler Peguero (.292), and 2B Franklin Tineo (.200) all had two hits and Tineo knocked in two runs.
Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada blanked the Tigers for four frames on two hits with a strikeout....Pablo Ochoa (3-6, 2.87 ERA) got the win and fanned five over three innings. Jose Linden blanked the Tigers in the 8th and Jhon Romero, 20, pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout in his pro debut.
Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs
The Tigers won the VSL title with a 5-2 win over the Rays to take the best of three series 2-1. Tigers’ Jesus Rodriguez tossed five innings of one-hit ball and the Rays didn’t score until the ninth.
