Pacific Coast League—AAA—Nashville (A’s) 9, Iowa 2
Nashville (55-65) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and took the series from Iowa (65-54).
In the Box: Only six hits for the I-Cubs. Mike Baxter plated a run with a sac fly in the second and a RBI ground out by Adron Chambers scored the other. 2B Javier Baez (.282) went 0-for-4 while DH Tommy La Stella doubled in four at-bats, the Cubs only extra base hit.
Pitching Chart: Signed as a free agent in early May, Felipe Paulino (3-7, 4.71 ERA) had an outside shot of making a spot start in Chicago but after a slow beginning to his comeback, the 31-year-old has settled into his role in Iowa’s rotation. Making his 16th AAA start, Paulino only lasted two innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks....Armando Rivero (3.33 ERA) had his longest outing of the year, working three innings while giving up a solo homer, the only hit he allowed.....Ryan Buchter (1.54 ERA) fanned two in two scoreless frames while Blake Cooper (2.98 ERA) surrendered two runs over the final two innings.
I-Cubs Notes: Carlos Pimentel (9-5, 3.05 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday night as the Cubs head to Las Vegas and face the Mets affiliate for a four-game series.
Southern League—AA—Chattanooga 14, Tennessee 2
Chattanooga (21-25, 64-50) scored five times in the first and didn’t quit scoring, beating Tennessee (23-24, 62-54) with a 19-hit attack.
In the Box: Tennessee had ten hits but could only score twice with both runs coming in the fifth. CF Jacob Hannemann (.244) hit a sac fly to score SS Ryan Dent (.225) and RF Bijan Rademacher (.251) doubled home C Tyler Pearson (.161), who reached on a double. LF Albert Almora (.269) extended his hit streak to 10-games with a single.
Pitching Chart: Following a broken bone in his foot that landed him on the DL for nearly two months, Rob Zastryzny (2-3, 4.58 ERA) has settled in at AA, logging 28.1 innings and a 3.18 ERA over his last five starts, including his first two wins. The 23-year-old left-hander made his 13th AA start on Friday night and ran into problems in the first inning, allowing five runs on five hits, as the Lookout hit for the cycle with two singles. Zastryzny finished with a line of 2.2 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 BB, 66 pitches, Game Score 3......Juan Paniagua went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. He walked two and threw 56 pitches....Gerardo Concepcion gave up two runs over the final 2.1innings.
Smokies News: Ryan Williams (7-2, 2.70 ERA) has gone from a 10th round pick that signed way under slot to one of the Cubs tops pitching prospects in a little over a year. A reliever his senior year at East Carolina, Williams started the year at South Bend (4-1, 1.17 ERA), was promoted to AA for a spot start, and was so impressive, he hasn’t left. The 23-year-old right-hander makes his 12th AA start on Saturday night at Chattanooga.
Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 7, Myrtle Beach 3
Lynchburg (61-57) scored seven times in their final three at-bats and beat Myrtle Beach (69-48) in the series opener.
In the Box: Only three hits for Myrtle Beach, one a long solo homer off the bat of 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.253) in the 4th for a 2-0 lead, his second as a Pelican. SS Carlos Penalver (.212) led off third with a walk, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on another wild pitch. LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.273) singled and added a RBI ground out in the 8th.
Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (2-1, 3.58 ERA) tossed five shutout innings, only surrendering three hits and walk. He fanned two, got six ground ball outs, and threw 57 pitches (38 strikes) for a game score of 62.....The bullpen struggled. Josh Conway (2-2, 2.80 ERA) threw a scoreless seventh but got tagged for three unearned runs in the 7th after allowing two singles after a fielding error by Brockmeyer that would have ended the inning......James Farris (6.39 ERA) yielded three singles and a pair of walks as the Hillcats plated three more runs in the 8th....Jasvir Rakkar (2.37 ERA) worked the ninth as a hit batter led to another run.
Pelicans News: Brad Markey (4-0, 1.01 ERA) has pitched his way into the conversation regarding Cubs prospects and makes his sixth start for the Pelicans on Saturday night in the second game of the series.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 12, Wisconsin (Brewers) 2
South Bend (53-61) scored in every inning but two as the beat Wisconsin (39-77) in the series opener.
In the Box: CF Ian Happ (.265) homered for the second straight game and finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. The Cubs ninth-round pick hit a solo bomb from the left side that sailed over the CF wall and went 445-feet......3B Jesse Hodges (.253) knocked in four runs, including two on his 6th homer of the season. He also doubled twice.....2B David Bote (.251) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and 1B Matt Rose (.300) had two hits and scored twice. SS Gleyber Torres (.308) had two hits, knocked in a run (59), walked, scored twice, and committed his 22nd error.......Cubs had 14 hits and went 5-for-15 with RISP.
Pitching Chart: It was a career night for James Norwood (2-1, 3.71 ERA) as the right-hander fanned seven and took a no-hitter into the sixth. Norwood gave up a RBI double in the sixth as the Rattlers scored two unearned runs. He threw 95 pitches in the outing, 60 for strikes, and finished with a game score of 70.......Ryan McNeil (2.92 ERA) picked up his first save of the season, keeping Wisconsin off the board the final three frames, He allowed two hits and walked on.
SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (5-4, 4.52 ERA) takes the mound Saturday night for his 19th start.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Everett (Mariners) 6, Eugene 3
Everett (32-22) beat Eugene (25-29) for the third straight night.
In the Box: LF Eloy Jimenez (.280) went 2-for-4 with a RBI as the Ems collected seven hits in the loss. C Tyler Alamo (.290) added two hits and a walk while Frandy Delarosa (.268) and Blake Headley (.220) plated runs.
Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz (4-2, 2.39 ERA) worked five innings but Everett got to the right-hander with three runs in the first and hit two homers in the game. He finished with a line of 5 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Game score 37.....Pedro Araujo (2.89 ERA) fanned seven over the final four innings, allowing a run on a hit and a walk.
Emeralds Notes: Adbert Alzolay (3-2, 0.87 ERA) will get his first start since June 29 as the right-hander has been stellar out of the bullpen in long relief, logging 22 innings in his last four outings with one run and 11 strikeouts.
Arizona Rookie League—Reds 5, Cubs 4
Reds (21-22) handed the Cubs (23-19) their second straight defeat.
In the Box: 3B Carlos Jimenez hit his first homer of the year, a two-run shot in the second that gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead.....2 Carlos Sepulveda (.293) collected his sixth multi-hit game in his last 10 contests, going 3-for-4 with a run scored....P.J. Higgins had two hits while Michael Foster knocked in a run......1B Chris Pieters, promoted from the DSL, went 1-for-4 with a double and is 2-for-8 in his first two games stateside.
Pitching Chart: Austyn Willis surrendered eight hits over five innings as the Reds plated five runs off the right-hander. He gave up a homer, walked one and fanned two......John Williamson (0.00 ERA) fanned four in two scoreless innings of relief and has 8 K in 4.1 IP in AZL......Gabriel Lima, who spent the year in the VSL, made his stateside debut on Friday night, working a 1-2-3 ninth. Lima was one of the Cubs tops starters in the VSL, going 4-2 with a 1.36 ERA in 46.1 innings, nine starts.
Cubs Notes: With back-to-back losses, the Cubs trail the Giants by 1.5 games and face the San Francisco affiliate on Saturday night.
Dominican Summer League—Brewers 9, Cubs 4
Brewers (30-35) used a six-run seventh to beat the Cubs (41-24).
In the Box: Only six hits for the Cubs, two off the bat of C Erick Gonzalez (.272), who hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot in the 8th. 3B Yeiler Peguero (.292), SS Edgar Rondon (.329), and RF Wander Feliz (.252) all knocked in runs.
Pitching Chart: Eury Ramos (4.71 ERA) got the start and allowed two runs over four innings.....Sucre Valdez (1-2, 3.47 ERA) tossed two shutout innings but allowed the first two hitters of the 7th to reach and was charged with two earned runs. Yapson Gomez (9.00 ERA) yielded four more runs in the 7th and Jose Morel (8.16 ERA) gave up a run in the 9th.
Cubs Notes: OF/1B Chris Pieters had been promoted to the Arizona Rookie League.
