Cubs Aug. 15 Minors Recap

Myrtle Beach’s Paul Blackburn set a new career mark with nine strikeouts to help lead the Pelicans over Lynchburg. Ryan Williams continued his impressive 2015 campaign with his 12th win, Eloy Jimenez delivered a walk-off, Albert Almora upped his hit streak to 12 games, and Daniel Vogelbach made a rehab start in Arizona.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Las Vegas (Mets) 1
Iowa (66-54) scored four times in the fourth to beat Las Vegas (66-55) in the series opener.

In the Box: RF John Andreoli (.286) smacked a two-run homer, added a RBI single and walked twice to lead the offense. SS Javier Baez (.285) went 2-for-5 while 1B Mike Baxter (.283), C Taylor Teagarden (.285) and LF Adron Chambers (.268) all had two hits. P Carlos Pimentel helped his own cause with a two-run single in the fourth.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Pimentel (10-5, 3.05 ERA) held the 51s to a solo homer over seven innings, allowing four hits and two walks. Pimentel fanned six, recorded eight ground ball outs, and had a game score of 69 in his 96-pitch outing..... Carl Edwards Jr. (2.73 ERA) tossed a scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout.....Yoervis Medina (5.90 ERA) got the final three outs.

I-Cubs Notes: Tsuyoshi Wada (3-5, 3.91 ERA) takes the hill Sunday night.......The Cubs have released LHP Joseph Ortiz and placed Frank Batista on the disabled list with a hand injury. IF/OF Arismendy Alcantara has been placed on the temporary inactive list. IF Anthony Giansanti was activated off the DL and assigned to AA Tennessee.

Ryan Williams fired six strong innings and the Smokies scored three times in the fifth as Tennessee (63-54) beat Chattanooga (64-51).

In the Box: CF Jacob Hannemann (.246) paced the offense with two hits including his 4th homer, a solo shot in the sixth. He added a single and scored twice.....DH Stephen Bruno (.271) went 2-for-3 with a RBI while C Willson Contreras (.329) and 1B Jacob Rogers (.254) both plated runs. LF Albert Almora went 1-for-5 to extend his hit streak to 12 games.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams (7-2, 2.70 ERA) gave up a solo homer in the first and that would be all the Lookouts would get. The right-hander surrendered three hits and two walks over six innings to recorded his 8th win in AA and is 12-3 on the season. He fanned four and threw 79 pitches, 49 for strikes.....Starling Peralta (2.23 ERA) fired two perfect innings for his 7th hold and P.J. Francescon (1.34 ERA) nailed down his 19th save in the ninth.

Smokies News: Jeffry Antigua (4-4, 4.63 ERA) gets the ball on Sunday afternoon in Chattanooga in the series finale.

Paul Blackburn fanned a career-high nine batters as Myrtle Beach (70-48) knocked off Lynchburg (61-58).

In the Box: Pelicans made the most of their four hits. C Cael Brockmeyer (.256) gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run single. A wild pitch allowed 2B Daniel Lockhart (.237) to score in the second and LF Pin-Chief Chen (.276) delivered a RBI triple in the 7th. Chen finished with two hits and 1B Chesny Young (.330) went 1-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn (5-5, 3.15 ERA) had a career night with nine strikeouts and matched his career-high working seven innings. The right-hander surrendered a solo homer in the fourth but that would be the Hillcats only run. He allowed four hits and didn’t walk anyone in the 91-pitch outing......Michael Heesch (2.09 ERA) pitched a scoreless eighth and David Garner (1.99 ERA) fanned the side in the 9th for his first save.

Pelicans News: Brad Markey (4-0, 1.01 ERA) will get the start on Sunday after being announced as the Saturday night’s starter.

Wisconsin (17-30, 41-77) overcame a career night from Jake Stinnett and beat South Bend (24-24, 53-62).

In the Box: 2B David Bote (.255) ripped a pair of doubles and scored once....DH Charcer Burks (.271) delivered a two-run single in the fourth and C Erick Castillo (.267) added a sacrifice fly. RD Jeffrey Baez (.271) added two more hits and is batting .410 in August (25-61).

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (5-5, 4.61 ERA) fanned a career-high eight over six innings but still ended up with the loss. The Cubs second-round pick last year allowed four runs on four hits and a walk. He recorded seven ground ball outs and had a gem score of 47......Jordan Minch (3.93 ERA) tossed two innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.

SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges (6-7, 3.8 1ERA) gets the ball in the series final on Sunday....IF Vimael Machin, the Cubs 10th round pick in June, has been assigned to Eugene.

Eloy Jimenez hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to give Eugene (26-29) the win and snap a three-game skid against Everett (32-23).

In the Box: In the 12th, Adonis Paula led off with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Kevonte Mitchell. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Headley put two runners on and Frandy Delarosa loaded the bases with a single. Jimenez followed with a fly ball to right that scored Mitchell.....CF Donnie Dewees (.239) smacked a two-run homer in the fifth as the Ems scored three times, the other run coming on a RBI single from Headley.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (3-2, 1.46 ERA) tossed six innings, allowing three runs in the sixth on a pair of homers. He finished with a line of 6 IP, 3 H 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, game score 55......The Eugene bullpen was nearly unhittable as they combined for six shutout innings on two hits......Jae-Hoon Ha (1.90 ERA) tossed two scoreless frames and Greyfer Eregua (2.19 ERA) pitched the ninth. Tyler Peitzmeier (5.59 ERA) fanned three over two innings and Craig Brooks (2-0, 3.38 ERA) earned his second pro win as the 7th round pick in June fanned the side in the 12th.

Four Giants (25-19) pitchers blanked the Cubs (23-20).

In the Box: Only three hits from the Cubs, two off the bat of 1B Daniel Vogelbach, who made his first rehab start since injuring his oblique back in early July. SS Andruw Monasterio (.227) singled as the Cubs were 0-for-2 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Camargo (3.16 ERA) kept the Giants off the board for the first four innings, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning four.....Tyler Skulina turned in his best rehab outing, striking out four in two scoreless frames.....Jesus Castillo (5.17 ERA) got charged with two runs in the 7th and M.T. Minacci (7.00 ERA) got out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th but surrendered three runs in the eighth.

Cubs Notes: The Cubs have released IF Varonex Cuevas.

Cubs (42-24) scored four times in the first and beat the Brewers (30-36).

In the Box: Cubs got all the runs they would need in the first on a two-run single from DH Yovanny Cuevas (.255) and RBI from 1B Franklin Tineo (.220) and C Erick Gonzalez (.263). Tineo ended the day 3-for-4 while CF Jose Jules (.201) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Andri Rondon (2.65 ERA) got the start and went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four punchouts.....Julian Aybar (8-1, 1.77 ERA) retired all nine hitters he faced, four on strikes and earned the win.....Luis Aquino (0.90 ERA) worked around three hits in a scoreless 8th and Aneuris Rondon (1.40 ERA) fanned a a pair in the ninth for his 11th save.

Cubs Notes: The Cubs have promoted three players from their VSL roster to the DSL—C Daniel Diaz, RHP Yapson Gomez and RHP Jose Leidenz. Lima (4-2, 1.36 ERA, 46.1 IP, 7 BB, 29 K, 0.95 WHIP) made his stateside debut on Friday night with a scoreless inning. Diaz hit .160/.316/.186 in 54 games. Gomez, 21, was 1-3 with a 1.40 ERA in seven games, 25.2 IP while Leidenz recorded two save in 15 relief appearances (3-0, 3.08 ERA, 26.1 IP).....The Cubs also released Wagner Disla and added RHP Jhon Romero to the roster..
