No hitter for Eugene, 8/16 Recap

Preston Morrison, Kyle Twomey, Luis Hernandez and Trey Masek (pictured) combined to throw the first no-hitter in Eugene history since 1968 as the Ems beat Everett 3-0.

Four Ems pitchers combine for no-no
Preston Morrison started it with three perfect innings and Trey Masek ended it with a strikeout as four Eugene pitcher combined to throw a no-hitter against Everett on Sunday night.

Morrison retired all nine hitter he faced and Kyle Twomey made it six straight frames, issuing only a walk. Luis Hernandez fanned four over two innings and worked around two walks in the 8th. Trey Masek got a ground out, an infield pop out and fanned to the final hitter to start the celebration. The four hurlers combined for 12 strikeouts.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Las Vegas (Mets) 3
Matt Szczur’s squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth scored John Andreoli with the winning run as Iowa (67-54) beat Las Vegas (66-56).

In the Box: Iowa grabbed a 3-0 lead as 1B Christian Villanueva (.262), C Taylor Teagarden (.299) and 2B Chris Valaika (.266) all knocked in runs. SS Javier Baez went 2-for-4 with a walk, scored a run and swiped his 14th base. In the ninth, Andreoli doubled and advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Szczur then dropped down the bunt to score the winning run.

Pitching Chart: Tsuyoshi Wada (3-5, 3.74 ERA) got the start and worked 5.2 innings, surrendering a run on five hits and two walks. Zac Rosscup (10.13 ERA) gave up two runs in an inning while Blake Cooper (6-3, 2.91 ERA) worked 1.1 scoreless frames and got credit for the win. Brian Schlitter (1.22 ERA) earned his 19th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Dallas Beeler (5-5, 5.16 ERA) is scheduled to get the start on Monday night in Las Vegas.

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 11, Tennessee 4
Chattanooga (21-26, 63-54) turned a 4-0 deficit into a series clinching win over Tennessee (24-24, 63-54).

In the Box: The Smokies first six batters in the lineup collected all eight hits, two from Willson Contreras, who is now second in the Southern League with a .331 average. Contreras knocked in his 65th RBI....2B Stephen Bruno (.271), SS Jonathan Mota (.143) and RF Anthony Giansanti (.224) added RBI....LF Albert Almora (.268) doubled and scored to extend his hit streak to 13 games.

Pitching Chart: Jeffry Antigua (4-4, 4.71 ERA) continues to log innings wherever needed as the soft-tossing lefty made his 18th start of the season, 12th in AA. Antigua worked into the fifth but threw 87 pitches and walked five, getting charged with three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Game score 41......Andres Santiago (4.70 ERA) got the final out of the fifth but not before he allowed both inherited runners to score and the Lookouts added three more. Corey Black (4.60 ERA) gave up a two-run homer and two more runs as he only recorded two outs in the 7th. Matt Brazis (1.23 ERA) got the final four outs without allowing a run.

Smokies News: Tennessee has Monday off and return to Smokies Stadium on Tuesday night for a six-game series with Montgomery, including a doubleheader on Friday.......The Smokies have placed OF Billy McKinney on the disabled list after he fouled a ball off his knee on Friday night. McKinney stayed in the game and hit a sacrifice fly but was pinch hit for his next at-bat as he was the DH. McKinney will be eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 22 but the Cubs could decide to shut him down the rest of the season. According to Smokies broadcaster Mick Gillispie, McKinney is on crutches and is wearing a brace on his knee. Acquired from the A’s last July, McKinney started the season at Myrtle Beach (.340/.432/.544, 29 games, 4 HR, 25 RBI) and was promoted to AA in mid-May and has hit .285/.346/.420 with 3 HR and 39 RBI in 77 games.

Brad Markey and two relievers blanked Lynchburg (28-22, 61-59) as Myrtle Beach (30-20, 71-48) took the series.

In the Box: RF Chesny Young (.335) collected three hits and scored in the third on CF Pin-Chieh Chen’s (.277) RBI triple. The Pelicans made it 2-0 in the 4th on doubles by DH Jordan Hankins (.227) and LF Kevin Brown (.238).

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (5-0, 0.85 ERA) continued his dominance of Carolina League hitters with 6.2 more innings of shutout ball. The Cubs 19th round pick in 2014 out of Virginia Tech, Markey only allowed three hits and a walk in his 92-pitch outing. He fanned four and had a game score of 71......Tyler Ihrig got the final out of the 7th and then blanked the Hillcats in the 8th....Jasvir Rakkar earned his 15th save with a scoreless ninth.

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach and the rest of the Carolina League have Monday off. The Pelicans head to Winston-Salem for a three-game showdown with the first-place Dash, who hold a 1.5 game lead.

Ian Happ knocked in three runs as South Bend (25-24, 54-62) took the series in Wisconsin (17-31, 40-78).

In the Box: DH Ian Happ (.267) homered for the third time in four games and lined his first pro triple into the right field corner, knocking in two runs in the third as the Cubs scored three times in the frame. Happ finished 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.....1B Matt Rose had two hits and is 9-for-28 (.321) in his first seven games....2B David Bote (.251) knocked in his 33rd run of the year and Charcer Burks (.270) went 1-for-5 with a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (6-7, 3.73 ERA) was solid for five innings, holding the Rattlers to just one run on four hits. He fanned two and only needed 49 pitches, 36 for strikes. Game score 57......Michael Wagner (3.30 ERA) tossed two shutout frames for and Alex Santana (3.09 ERA) threw a scoreless 8th, the second hold for both hurlers......Corbin Hoffner (0.47 ERA) walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth but retired the next three hitters, the final batter on strikes.

In the Box: Donnie Dewees extended his hit streak to nine games with a RBI single in the third to give the Ems a 1-0 lead. Kevonte Mitchell went 2-3 and doubled home Tyler Alamo in the fifth, after he singled. Eugene made it 3-0 in the 8th when Eloy Jimenez doubled with two out and scored on Ian Rice’s RBI single.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (0.66 ERA), the Cubs 8th round pick out of TCU in June, made his third pro start and was perfect for three innings. The right-hander fanned four, matching a career-high......June’s 13th round pick Kyle Twomey (1-0, 1.80 ERA) added three more no-hit frames with the only base runner reaching on a walk. The left-hander from USC has not allowed a run over his last three appearances, eight innings. It was his first pro win.......Luis Hernandez (9.00 ERA) made it seven straight no-hit frames with a scoreless 7th and worked around a pair of walks in the 8th. Trey Masek (4.05 ERA) made history capping off the first no-hitter in Eugene history since 1968 with a 1-2-3 ninth, including a strikeout of the game’s final batter. It was his second save.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene takes the long bus ride to Boise and send Kyle Miller (1-1, 5.14 ERA) to the hill in the series opener.
