Cubs Aug. 17 Minors Recap

Light schedule on Monday night highlighted by the Cubs sweeping the White Sox in the Arizona Rookie League. Eugene beat Boise and Iowa lost of a walk-off homer.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Las Vegas (Mets) 5, Iowa 4—12 innings
Danny Muno’s walk-off homer in the 12th game Las Vegas (67-56) the win over Iowa (67-55).

In the Box: The Cubs took a 4-2 lead in the 9th on a RBI triple from 1B Mike Baxter (.280) and a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Christian Villanueva (.262). SS Javier Baez (.291) dropped a bunt single down the third base line in the first to score RF John Andreoli (.284) while 2B Tommy La Stella (.222) added a RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead in the 6th. CF Matt Szczur (.296) and Baez both had two hits as the Cubs only managed six.

Pitching Chart: The big news of the night was Carl Edwards Jr. came into the game in the ninth for the save, threw two pitches, and left with a finger injury. No update on his condition.....Dallas Beeler (4.85 ERA) had another solid effort, allowing a run over 7.1 innings. He surrendered six hits and fanned three in his 90-pitch outing.....Ryan Buchter gave up a hit in and got a strikeout in the 8th but Brian Schlitter gave up two hits and a walk, allowing both inherited runners to score. After Edwards left the game, Armando Rivero couldn’t hold the 51s, allowing two runs to score to send the game into extra inning. Brake Britton tossed two scoreless frames but gave up the homer leadingoff the 12th.

I-Cubs Notes: Eric Jokisch (3-3, 4.79 ERA) gets the ball on Tuesday night in Vegas.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee
Tennessee had Monday off and open a six-game series with Montgomery, including a doubleheader on Friday, at Smokies Stadium. Felix Pena (5-7, 3.96 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball on Tuesday night.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach and the rest of the Carolina League had Monday off and the Pelicans head to Winston-Salem for a three-game showdown with the first-place Dash. The Pelicans haven’t announced a starting pitcher.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend
South Bend had Monday off open a three-game series with Dayton on Tuesday night. The two teams have already gotten into one brawl this season and the last series featured a hard slide out of the second base line by Jeffrey Baez that allowed the winning runs to score. Baez was hit by a pitch the next day that led to ejections. Erick Leal gets the ball in the series opener on Tuesday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, Boise (Rockies) 4
Eugene (28-29) scored five times in the final two innings to beat Boise (19-38).

In the Box: Alex Bautista (.250) went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs in the 8th while 2B Frandy Delarosa (.269) added a two-run single in the 9th......3B Adonis Paula got the Ems on the board with his first NWL homer, a two-run shot in the fifth. DH Donnie Dewees (.244) extended his hit streak to 10-games with a pair of singles while LF Eloy Jimenez (.277) went 2-for-4 with a RBI. SS Andrew Ely (.306) had two singles and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Miller (1-1 5.14 ERA) made his second start and the 19th round pick from Florida Atlantic didn’t make it out of the second inning. On a strict pitch count, the 21-year-old worked around two walks in the first but surrendered four straight hits in the second as he fell behind several hitters, allowing three runs.....Casey Bloomquist (1.69 ERA) got the final two outs of the second and then worked a 1-2-3 third. The right-hander worked two more shutout frames and finished with a line of 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.....Mark Malave (7.11 ERA) issued an unearned run over two frames with three punchouts.....Scott Frazier (1-0, 5.40 ERA) earned his first win since 2013 as the right-hander worked a 1-2-3 8th with a strikeout.....Scott Effross (0.00 ERA) picked up his first pro save with two punchouts in a perfect ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Carson Sands (2-3, 3.59 ERA) gets the start on Tuesday night in Boise.

Cubs (24-20) swept the White Sox (25-20) in a twin-bill.

In the Box: GAME 1—Cubs came out on top of the slugfest in the opener with 11 hits and seven walks.LF Daniel Spingola (.455) doubled, tripled and knocked in three runs while DH Chris Pieters (.364) went 2-for-3 and knocked in three runs. 3B P.J. Higgins (.301) walked three times and scored twice while RF Robert Garcia (.345) and SS Andruw Monasterio (.237) both went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Daniel Vogelbach continued his rehab with a single, a walk and two runs scored.......... GAME 2—1B Jose Paniagua’s (.271) fourth homer of the year, a two-run blast, gave the Cubs the lead for good in the third. Carlos Jimenez and Roberto Caro had two hits each while Tyler Payne went 1-for-3 with a RBI. Vogelbach doubled, walked twice and scored two runs.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Dylan Cease may posses the highest ceiling of any Cubs pitching prospect with a fastball that can hit the high 90s and a good breaking ball. After Tommy John surgery prolonged his pro debut until this year, the Cubs 6th round pick in 2014 continues to log innings in the Arizona Rookie League. Making his 10th appearance of the season (21 IP), the 19-year-old worked a 1-2-3 first and made a throwing error that allowed two runs to score in the second. Two singles and a wild pitch with one out put runners at second and third and after striking out his second hitter of the game, was pulled.....A passed ball and a single allowed both inherited runners to score as Michael Knighton (2-0, 5.95 ERA) took over, getting the final out on a fly ball. Knighton gave up a three-run homer in the fourth and got credit for the win, working 2.1 innings.....Cubs third-round pick Bryan Hudson (10.80 ERA) made his second pro appearance and worked a scoreless sixth, recording his first pro strikeout....Jared Cheek (0.00 ERA) got his second save with a scoreless 7th........GAME 2—Venezuelan Gabriel Lima (2.25 ERA) made his first stateside start and the 19-year-old right-hander worked three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. He fanned two and threw a wild pitch.....Santiago Rodriguez (1-1, 3.38 ERA) earned the win with three scoreless innings. Rehabbing from South Bend, the 21-year-old gave up three hits and fanned a pair......Tanner Griggs (0.00 ERA) worked a scoreless 7th with two punchouts for his second save.

Dominican Summer League—Marlins 5, Cubs 1
Cubs (42-25) out hit the Marlins (23-44) but lost and remained tied with Red Sox II for first place.

In the Box: The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first when CF Jose Jules (.203) singled and scored when RF Yovanny Cuevas (.265) was thrown out at second trying to steal with runners on first and third. Cuevas went 3-for-4 with a double while LF Samir Lara (.292) doubled and walked in four plate appearances.

Pitching Chart: Deibi Torres (2-4, 6.0 ERA) only allowed one hit in 3.1 innings but walked five and gave up three earned runs. Fauris Guerrero (3.32 ERA) worked 1.2 scoreless frames but allowed two of the three inherited runners to score in the fourth. Jhon Romero (3.00 ERA) allowed two runs in two innings and Yapson Gomez (4.50 ERA) kept the Marlins off the board the final two innings.
