McKinney out for season
Manager Buddy Bailey told Smokies broadcaster Justin Rocke that Tennessee OF Billy McKinney was out for the year with a hairline fracture of his knee. The 21-year-old will go to Chicago and see the orthopedic specialists. McKinney fouled a ball off the knee on Aug. 14, stayed in the game and hit a sac fly, and was pinch-hit for at his next at-bat as the DH. Acquired from the A’s last July, McKinney started the season at Myrtle Beach (.340/.432/.544, 29 games, 4 HR, 25 RBI) and was promoted to AA in mid-May and has hit .285/.346/.420 with 3 HR and 39 RBI in 77 games.
Cubs sign Cahill, put Edwards on DL
The Cubs have signed right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill, who recently opted out of his contract with the Dodgers on Aug. 14. The 27-year-old started the year with the Braves but was released on June 20 after 15 games (26.1 IP, 7.52 ERA). Cahill was drafted in the second round by the A’s in 2006 and made his big league debut for Oakland 2009. He pitched three years for the A’s, making 96 starts including an 18-8 season when he was named an all-star in 2010. He was traded to Arizona and made 74 starts for the D-Backs, going 24-34 with a has pitched in the big leagues for Oakland 2009-11 (96 starts) and Arizona 2012-14 (90 games). Cahill was assigned to Iowa and the I-Cubs put Carl Edwards Jr. on the disabled list with a callous on a finger on his pitching hand. Edwards left Monday night’s game after throwing two pitches in Las Vegas.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Las Vegas (Mets) 6, Iowa 5
Las Vegas won on a walk-off for the second straight night, this time on a hit-by-pitch to beat Iowa.
In the Box: 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.235) went 3-for-4 as Iowa had 11 hits in the loss. SS Javier Baez (.294) added two singles while 1B Mike Olt (.247) and Adorn Chambers (.270) plated two runs each.
Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch (3-3, 4.76 ERA) made his second start since returning from the DL and threw 63 pitches in the four innings outing. He allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks.....Yoervis Medina (5.81 ERA) gave up a run in two frames and Zac Rosscup (8.53 ERA) pitched a scoreless 7th. Blake Cooper (6-4, 3.00 ERA) kept the 51s off the board in the 8th but only got one out in the ninth before loading the bases and hitting a batter to plate the wining run.
I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (3-7, 4.71 ERA) takes the mound Wednesday night for his 17th start (84 IP).
Southern League—AA—Montgomery @ Tennessee—Rained Out
Rain canceled Tuesday night’s tilt at Smokies Stadium and the two teams will play a twin-bill on Wednesday night. First pitch is 5:35 p.m. EST. Felix Pena (5-7, 3.96 ERA) and Pierce Johnson (6-1, 1.70 ERA) are scheduled to start for Tennessee.
Smokies News: C Taylor Davis has been sent back to Tennessee from Iowa for the second time this season. The 25-year-old hit .353/.389/.853 with 4 HR and 10 RBI in 10 games during his first stint in June.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach @ Winston-Salem—Rained Out
Tuesday night’s game was rained out and the two teams will playa doubleheader on Wednesday with the first game starting at 5:30 p.m. EST. Jonathan Martinez (8-2, 2.83 ERA) is scheduled to start in the opener and Jen-Ho Tseng (5-7, 3.65 ERA) will go in game two.
Pelicans News: Mark Zagunis has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 8. Zagunis was hit on the head by a pitch on Aug. 7......1B Jacob Rogers has returned to the team after playing 23 games in AA (.247/.374/.329, 1 HR, 13 RBI)....The Pelicans also activated RHP Tyler Skulina off the disabled list and put C Jordan Hankins on the 7-day DL.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Dayton (Reds) 2
South Bend (26-24, 55-62) scored seven runs in the first two innings and Erick Leal tossed five shutout frames to take the series opener against Dayton (61-59).
In the Box: Cubs scored four times in the first as 1B Matt Rose (.344) delivered a two-run double to cap off the frame. LF Ian Happ (.282) started the scoring with a RBI single and Charcer Burks (.268) added a sacrifice fly. South Bend added three more in the second as Happ delivered a sacrifice fly and 2B David Bote (.255) smacked a two-run homer, his fifth of season.....RF Jeffrey Baez (.276) collected another three-hit game and scored twice while CF Rashad Crawford (.283), Rose, Bote and Happ all had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (8-8, 4.27 ERA) was efficient for five scoreless innings, allowing three hits while issuing no walks. He fanned four and had a game score of 65.....Dillon Maples (3.80 ERA) tossed two frames, allowing a solo homer in the sixth....Daniel Lewis worked a 1-2-3 eighth and gave up a run on a wild pitch in the 9th.
SB-Cubs News: Trevor Clifton (5-9, 4.45 ERA) faces Dayton for the first time since he was ejected for his part in a bench clearing brawl on June 17 in South Bend.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Boise (Rockies) 5, Eugene 4
Boise (20-38) scored all five runs in the third and hung on to beat Eugene (28-30).
In the Box: Donnie Dewees collected his first four-hit game as a pro to extend his hit streak to 11 games. The second-round pick scored three times and swiped two bases (10).......2B Frandy Delarosa (.268) doubled while 3B Andrew Ely (.303) and 1B Blake Headley (.230) singled.
Pitching Chart: Carson Sands (2-3, 3.59 ERA) cruised through the first two innings, got the first two outs of the third, and then allowed four hits and two walks to the next six hitters, five eventually scoring.....Greyfer Eregua (2.06 ERA) allowed one inherited runner to score and then tossed 2.1 scullers frames. Pedro Araujo (2.68 ERA) fanned three in three shutout frames.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 5, Reds 4
Cubs (28-20) tied the game with two runs in the 7th and then added two more in the 8th to beat the Reds (21-28).
In the Box: LF Chris Pieters (.429) ripped two doubles, scored once and added a sacrifice fly in three at-bats.....DH Daniel Spingola (.500) went 2-for-3 and knocked in his fifth run in his fifth game.....2B Carlos Sepulveda (.288) went 2-for-3 and C Yohan Matos (.127) added a RBI single.
Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood made his first appearance since going on the DL after a June 26 start for Myrtle Beach. The right-hander worked two innings, allowing a single while fanning four. The 21-year-old should make a few starts in the AZL and rejoin the Pelicans for the playoffs......Manuel Rondon tossed four frames and fanned five, surrendering two runs on three hits and three walks.....Junior Marte made his stateside debut after an all-star season in the DSL. Marte fanned two but gave up a run on a walk, a hit, two wild pitches and a balk.. The 20-year-old made 11 starts in the DSL, going 4-1 with a 1.29 ERA, 55.2 IP, 16 BB, 68 K, 0.88 WHIP......Ariel Ovando (2-0, 0.53 ERA) got the win with four strikeouts in two perfect innings in his 13th appearance.
Cubs Notes: Cubs are only one back in the loss column to the Giants (12-6) starting action on Tuesday. The Diamondbacks are 10-7.
Dominican Summer League—Marlins 6, Cubs 4
The Cubs (42-26) dropped their second straight to the Marlins (24-44).
In the Box: Cubs only had four hits, were held scoreless for seven innings and scored all four of their runs in the 8th. After two were out, CF Jose Jules (.204) delivered a RBI single and an error by the right-fielder cleared the bases allowing three more runs to score. 1B Richard Nunez (.248) went 2-4 while DH Rafael Mejia (.261) doubled.
Pitching Chart: Wander Cabrera (4-3, 2.34 ERA) worked a scoreless first but walked the first three hitters of the second and was lifted. Hector Garcia (3.98 ERA) allowed all three inherited runners to score and then gave up another run over the next three innings. Jose Leidenz (3.00 ERA) surrendered a run over two frames and the Marlins added three unearned runs off Aneuris Rosario (1.33 ERA) in the 8th.
Cubs Notes: Cubs find themselves in a battle for the division title as they are one-game behind Red Sox II (43-25) and tied with Mets II. The regular season ends on Saturday and the Cubs have two games each with Pirates I and Yankees II..
