Cubs Aug. 21 Minors Recap

Albert Almora’s walk-off single gave Tennessee the win in the bottom of the 12th. Eugene continued its winning ways but the rest of the affiliates had a rough night.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Salt Lake (Angels) 12, Iowa 8
Iowa (69-57) came out on the short end of a slugfest with Salt Lake (51-76) despite hitting three homers.

In the Box: Every starter had at least one hit as the Cubs pounded Bees pitching for 15 hits.....2B Javier Baez went 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a three-run homer, his 12th.....1B Mike Olt (.251) and 3B Christian Villanueva (.264) both homered as part of their two-hit night. C Taylor Teagarden (.314) went 3-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Tsuyoshi Wada (3-5, 4.16 ERA) only lasted three innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, including a homer.....Armando Rivero (2-2, 3.49 ERA) took the loss as the right-hander got charged for five runs, only one earned. He allowed three hits and walked three....Yoervis Medina (6.00 ERA) gave up two runs in two innings and Brian Schlitter (1.17 ERA) tossed a scoreless 8th.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Montgomery (Rays) 6—12 innings
Albert Almora delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th to give Tennessee (65-57) the win over Montgomery (66-56).

In the Box: LF Albert Almora (.264) delivered the game winner in the 12 after the Smokies came back from a 6-2 deficit. Almora ended the night 2-for-7 with a double.....DH Willson Contreras (.324) was 2-for-5 and smacked his seventh homer. Every Smokies player had at least one hit with 1B Anthony Giansanti (.232) going 3-for-5 with a RBI. 2B Ryan Dent (.228) had a pair of doubles while 3B Jeimer Candelario (.291) was 2-for-6 with two runs scored.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams (8-2, 3,12 ERA) threw 84 pitches over 5.2 innings, surrendering six runs on seven this and two walks. He fanned four, got eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 33....Matt Brazis (0.93 ERA) threw 2.1 innings of shutout relief.....Starling Peralta (2-1, 2.05 ERA) tossed four scoreless innings to earn the win. He only allowed two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Smokies News: The two teams will play a twin-bill on Saturday with Jeffry Antigua (4-3, 3.25 ERA) and Fernando Cruz (2-0, 5.47 ERA) getting the start. The second game was postponed Friday night due to the length of the first game.

Carolina League—High A—Frederick (Orioles) 4, Myrtle Beach 3
Frederick (60-64) used a pair of homers to beat Myrtle Beach (73-50) in the series opener

In the Box: Myrtle Beach scored all their runs in the fifth on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly from DH Benjamin Carhart (.243) and a RBI single from RF Mark Zagunis (.273). Carhart and CF Trey Martin (.239) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (2-1, 3.58 ERA) went five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, including a pair of homers. The right-hander threw 70 pitches, fanned three and had a game score of 38.....Tyler Ihrig (3.07 ERA) blanked the Keys for two innings and James Farris (5.93 ERA) tossed a scoreless eighth.

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne (Padres) 6, South Bend 2
Fort Wayne (35-18, 67-54) grabbed a 6-0 lead and beat South Bend (27-26, 56-64) in the series opener at Four Winds FIeld.

In the Box: Cubs were held to just five hits as 1B Matt Rose was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Charcer Burks singled in a run and stole his 25th base while Gleyber Torres went 1-for-3, scored once and walked.

Pitching Chart: James Norwood (2-2, 4.26 ERA) threw five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk. Dillon Maples (4.24 ERA) gave up a two-run homer in his two innings and Daniel Lewis (3.00 ERA) fanned three in two shutout frames.

SB-Cubs News: Jake Stinnett (5-5, 4.61 ERA) makes his 20th start on Saturday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 6
Alex Bautista’s RBI groundout in the 7th scored the eventual winning run as Eugene (14-9, 31-30) downed Salem-Keizer (11-12, 31-30) to move into first place in the North Division.

In the Box: Big night for Andrew Ely (.330) as the shortstop went 4-for-4, knocked in a run, and scored twice. CF Donnie Dewees (.265) extended his hit streak to 14 games, going 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI.....LF Eloy Jimenez (.285) went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI while C Ian Rice (.261) collected two hits and plated a run.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (0-1, 6.89 ERA) only went 1.2 innings, allowed two runs on a walk and a hit...Adbert Alzolay (4-2, 2.18 ERA) gave up four runs over 4.1 Ionians but got credit for the win. He allowed five hits, walked two and recorded one strikeout.....Scott Effross had his best outing as a pro, tossing a career-high three shutout innings with two strikeouts for his second save.

Emeralds Notes: Kyle Twomey (1-0, 1.80 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night.

Cubs had the day off and are currently tied for first with the Giants for first place in the East Division.



Dominican Summer League—Yankees II 5, Cubs 3
The Yankees scored a run in the 8th to tie the game and then won it with two in the top of the 12th, eliminating the Cubs (43-28) from the post-season.

In the Box: Only six hits for the Cubs, two from CF Jose Jules (.218), who doubled and scored. C Erick Gonzalez (.283) was 1-for-4 with a RBI double and scored once.

Pitching Chart: Andri Rondon (2.41 ERA) got the start and went five innings, allowing an unearned run on Four hits with five strikeouts. Yapson Gomez tossed two scoreless frames and Jose Leidenz got charged with a blown save, giving up a run in the 8th. Aneuris Rosario tossed two innings, surrendering two runs in the 12th.
